Witcher 3's HDR Patch For PS4 Pro Is Still Coming

Back in December, CD Projekt Red said the update would be out "in the near future."

Back in late December, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red said it would add HDR support on PS4 Pro for the celebrated RPG "in the near future." Months later, the patch is still not out, leaving fans to wonder what's going on and when the update will be delivered.

Now, community manager Marcin Momot has addressed the situation. Writing on Twitter, Momot apologized for CD Projekt Red's silence on matter, going on to say that the studio "should have more info on that next week."

As announced previously, this patch is also expected to make "a number of technical tweaks improving and the overall experience" on PS4 Pro. HDR, which stands for high dynamic range, aims to represent colors in a more realistic way; scenes will look more lush and vibrant. Check out GameSpot's detailed breakdown of HDR here to learn more about it.

This won't be the first PS4 Pro patch for The Witcher 3, as CD Projekt Red added 4K support in an update last year. This same patch improved the game's overall performance slightly as a result of the PS4 Pro's extra horsepower.

The Witcher 3 already supports 4K and HDR on Xbox One X by way of an update that was released in December 2017. The game already looked beautiful on console (and even better on PC), but these new console updates took things to another level.

In addition to the new PS4 Pro patch and ongoing support for Gwent, CD Projekt Red is currently working on the much-anticipated Cyperpunk 2077. The game's Twitter account recently came alive for the first time in years, while CD Projekt Red has confirmed it is attending E3 this year. Whether or not this means we'll get some news on the game in the coming months remains to be seen, but we sure hope that is the case.

Something feels off here. For a dev like CDPR who is so attentive to their community and the state of their game, it's weird how aloof they've been about this patch. It's fine if MS received some sort of exclusivity for HDR, I just wish they would say as much and tell us when that exclusivity ends. I don't even care so much about the HDR or any of the performance options the OneX got. I just want a patch that will fix all the constant game crashes. As is, I'm checking for an update so much because the game keeps crashing.

Edit: Big thank you to Gamespot for continuing to cover this. I search for news regarding this patch almost weekly and you guys are one of the only sites providing new info on this.

@CyanX73: Man, I know how you feel! I check up on Google everyday. Sometimes, I skip a day and hope that maybe it'll happen if I don't check up on it.

CDPR sure didn't mind doing a complete 4k and HDR patch for Microsoft...and so quickly as well...hmmmmmm...and seeing that the last two witcher games came out only on Xbox...hmmmmmm...makes you wonder, don't it? Also, the some of the quests have been broken/bugged since the last patch on PS4...yup...just been sitting there broken for 6 months...my wife can't even check her inventory without the game freezing up.

@tommyleela: Alot of devs are praising Microsoft for just how easy it is to enhance existing titles for the X . Maybe PS4 Pro is that bit harder to implement the changes. Plus it's not as powerful and has less memory so it would take longer to optimise on the Pro compared to the X anyway.

While the delay sucks, I'm glad to see they're doing what they can to put out a solid patch. Many dev studios would have shoved out a (possibly buggy) minimum viable product that would have only disappointed and pissed of many users.

So only the PS4 Pro is getting a HDR patch even though it's also available on the standard PS4?

I really wish they would fix the darn Witcher armour sets colours and textures which became really weird and low quality when the last expansion introduced the underwhelming dye system. It's really broken the aesthetic of Witcher gear, which is so tragic considering how great these sets looked originally.

I cannot wait to see what joys Cyberpunk 2077 has to offer!! Expecting 100+ hours of gameplay with it as was the case w/ Witcher 3.

@hardcoregamer1: It looks stellar on the OneX, should look fairly similar on the Pro. It's worth the wait.

@aross2004: Great use of HDR but it's not quite perfect. It has a light bar in some scenes that won't go away. Almost looks like a line on the screen at times. It does look great on X but unfortunately if you are used to playing on a PC with a 980ti or higher things like transparency of the water and shadows on everything doesn't quite work out as well on the X.

In saying that it still looks impressive on a 65 inch 4k TV all the same. Especially for a console.
