Witcher 3 Studio Responds to Crunch Accusations

Anonymous "insider" claims trailers and demos are overly flattering; Studio says trailers speak for themselves.

A spokesperson for the studio creating The Witcher 3 has responded to claims that the team has been "crunching for over a year" in a bid to overcome development challenges.

Writing on the games forum NeoGAF, one anonymous user took issue with others praising the Witcher 3, claiming that developer CD Projekt Red has built an "overblown" impression of the game. After the anonymous poster's legitimacy was questioned, a NeoGAF administrator claimed they had been "vetted and cleared," suggesting these were not the words of an outsider.

The anonymous individual took issue with others "painting CD Projekt Red as some magical dev studio with only the best of interests of the gamers in mind. Trust me they are not."

He continued: "The bullsh**ting with the Witcher 3 started from day one. PR is creating an overblown vision of a game that doesn't exist while the team is in crazy crunch time for over a year now."

In response to these accusations, the studio's communications exec, Michał Platkow-Gilewski, told GameSpot that the video demonstrations of the game speak for themselves.

"In principle, we don't comment on rumors, especially when someone anonymous says that it’s 'his/her word against CDP PR,'" Platkow-Gilewski said in a prepared statement.

He added: "So, PR aside, if you have any doubts about Wild Hunt’s quality, have a look at the 35-minute gameplay video we published some time ago, or check out gamers' reactions to our public previews at Gamescom, San Diego Comic Con, and E3 (it's all public and available on the studio’s YouTube channel), and decide for yourself."

CD Projekt Red was asked specifically by GameSpot if the studio wanted to address claims that its team had been crunching--an industry term for working for an unreasonable and unhealthy amount of time in the office--for more than a year. The studio did not respond to this request.

Crunch is a common and ethically complex practice in games development. Many developers, whether self-employed or working at a studio, impose it on themselves. Others believe the practice is unequivocally unfair, especially if imposed on them, due to the detrimental effect crunch can have on quality of life.

In March, CD Projekt Red delayed The Witcher 3 release date to February 2015. At the time, the studio wrote: "We could have released the game towards the end of this year as we had initially planned. Yet we concluded that a few additional months will let us achieve the quality that will satisfy us, the quality gamers expect from us."

all I care about is the finished product, and I haven't seen it yet. i reserve judgement until i've played the game myself.

I don't think I could ever crunch, especially if it's mentally fatiguing. I can deal with physical fatigue, but not mental

I do see how a 'crunch' is a bad thing but I believe people are reading too much into this. Especially if the people involved are passionate about their product, they probably don't mind putting in that extra effort to make the game absolutely perfect. I know I wouldn't (and don't).

They're probably not as noble or "all about the players" as we all seem to think, but they're certainly closer than the majority of other devs out there.

Add to the mix free copies of Witcher 1&2 for anyone who bought them on Steam, so they can also have the DRM free copy to play/install on any computer they wish to, how can you dislike a group who back up what they claim and have gamers in mind? Sure they want to make money, everybody on earth does, but few go to those lengths to ensure customer satisfaction and re-enforce future business with consumers. Only thing I fault them on is making me wait so long to play Witcher 3, but that is just me being selfish and wanting my cake now :P

<< LINK REMOVED >> i played both of Witcher 1&2 (both were amazing),and Dragon Age 1&2 (the first was a blast BUT the second was a "CRAP"), when you hear the word witcher the first thing or picture comes to your mind is the face of the famous Geralt of Rivia, want to say that the both games hope to be great they both adopt the term "open world" from the infamous game skyrim and the issue of creating your won player isn't that big deal

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ok this deserves a response. Bioware did not lie on ME3 can't comment on DA2 haven't played but want to. I won't get into a point-counterpoint but if I remember correctly the article about ME3 was when they hadn't changed the story. It wasn't a lie. I will agree about letting trailers make your choice though.

I think both games are going to be great. As for the character creation issue, I think it's a none issue when the character you're playing as a good one, which Geralt more than qualifies as. By your logic then The Nameless One must have been in a bad game...

Nice try, anonymous, but we still love CdProjekt. Until this day, they delivered exactly what they promised, not to mention the no-drm policy and respecting and listening to fans worldwide. It's gonna take more than that dubious statement to make us hate this amazing company.

The reality of life is this, many jobs and professions involve crunch times. It's nothing old nor new, it's just real life. I crunched for 26 years at my profession and am now on the beach! It's how life really is. Just saying folks!

Yeah, no. I don't plan to get TW3, simply because for whatever reason Geralt and I don't seem to get on (still haven't finished 1 or 2) but accusing a dev that puts no copy-protection on its games of somehow trying to con people? Nope, that doesn't fly, son.

An anonymous source.... a.k.a. some bitter Russian kid who's jealous of Poland's success goes talking smack about it, cause he thinks that will put a dent in their earnings..... either that or some rival developer from Dragon Age trying to hijack sales from CDPR, so that people go get DA instead. Why doesn't this anonymous source post his face pic online or go on YT? Let's see this anonymous leaker... why is he so afraid? This isn't Watergate, it's a video game. The kid sounds like what I described, a hijacking troll.

Unfortunately crunching is a common practice in the industry. The thing is that some companies don't pay for extra hours. CDPR does.

Its a common trick to give someone a title and pay him by the week instead of by the hours then have the person work 70 hours instead of 40. Some people live for a title, most others don't have a choice in the matter but figure it will be easier next time with a better resume.

EVERY studio makes games for profit. Period. CD Project is definitely better than others, true, but they are not some kind of charity company either.
And Crunch time is not nice, but it comes with the profession (I don't buy that 1 year of crunch thing, makes no sense)

<< LINK REMOVED >> It was suppose to release this fall (now basically), so the crunch time would make sense as they'd basically just extended the release window thus the crunch time. Its not like they're gonna slow down because they got an extra ½ year of dev time.

Its capitalism. When you can treat people like slaves you do, when you can't you move production to third world countries. The good news about "crunch time" in the gaming industry is that once developers are done with creating a product for their masters they're often laid off as some sort of "thank you" from the administration.

They should expect some vacations somewhere in the first quarter of 2015.

I'm sure that in the Roman Empire some people praised slavery because slavery made possible wonders like the Coliseum, Roman aqueducts and whatever.

The thought hasn't occurred to you that CD PR is a Polish company? You know... an eastern European country with people benefiting some eastern European education? Oups, I guess capitalism is not needed anymore...

So they can become slaves for someone else. And if you quit any job you can be sure the next employer will look at your resume very closely.

It was said that masters cared for their slaves since they owned them (like cattle) while in capitalism no one feels any obligations for their employees, and limit themselves to what they are forced to do under law.

As for an eastern education I think you could greatly benefit from one.

I relate to Americans everyday and I'm always chocked by their profound naivety and lack of education as far as politics go. Not blaming them though because for most their education comes from the TV in their living room.

As for people from eastern Europe I've meet many and usually they're highly educated. Their only weakness is a certain naivety toward capitalism; nothing a few years at minimum wage can't dissipate, nothing a few years of exploitation from landlords can't dissipate.

I thought you were referring to a far eastern education (i.e. Asian), not eastern Europe. They are also highly intelligent, but tend to have a more rigid thought process in my experience. Anyway, we're all just humans with individual strengths and weaknesses, so it's all good.

Let's try understanding what you're saying. What is communism in your mind, what is utopia, is communism utopia only in Eastern Europe but not elsewhere, on what basis does something "kinda" works or not, does it "kinda" doesn't work one place and "kinda" works elsewhere?

Are you aware that "communist" China is one of the most powerful country on this planet, economically speaking? If communism itself is utopia ask yourself this: why the 20 years war in Vietnam, killing millions of people (US)? Why the overthrowing of Allende in Chile in 1973 (US sponsored)? Why the embargo on Cuba since 1960 (US)?

Don't you find it strange that utopia needs murder, bombs, CIA shenanigans, military dictatorships, embargo and so on to be stopped?

I could answer all these questions but I think you could benefit from finding them by yourself.

That is very different. Those were new IPs. as for DA 2 have not played it but from what I've heard is that they changed some things and it really isn't that bad. As far as this goes CDPR has already established trust and Both games have been great. They aren't the type to lie. Everything we've seen proves this idiot wrong.
