Witcher 3 Sells 6 Million Copies

CD Projekt Red's open-world RPG reaches new sales milestone.

[UPDATE] CD Projekt Red studio head Adam Badowski has now released a statement regarding The Witcher 3 reaching 6 million in sales.

"One could think we have six million reasons to be happy and that's it. We do, but that number is also a big responsibility and I want everyone to know that we, as a studio, realize that. For us, all your high praise, all the positive reviews, are also an obligation--we've made a really good game but there's still a long road ahead of us. Everyone here in CD Projekt Red is really attached to their work and how you, the gamers, perceive it. Red is full of artists, wild dreamers and people crazy about what they do (and sometimes just plain crazy). We lose sleep over that particular color the sun has when it sets over Velen, and argue over arranging the furniture in a house the majority of gamers will probably never see. We're not the kind of people who are easily satisfied and we always strive for more. I'd like you to know that.

"Yes, six million copies is a great achievement for a company making RPGs, but this business is not only about that. If our games are a gallery of sound, picture and text--you are the visitors of this gallery. To an artist, there's no sweeter sight than people enjoying their work. That's why, in the name of all the devs in the studio, I'd like to say thanks to each and every one of you."

The original story is below

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold more than 6 million copies during its first six weeks, developer CD Projekt Red announced on Wednesday. The company revealed the new sales figure, up from 4 million in its first two weeks, as part of its latest earnings report. The exact sales figure is 6,014,576.

Released in May to glowing reviews, The Witcher 3 is expected to be the final entry in hero Geralt's story, though not necessarily the last game in the series. Whatever the case, you shouldn't expect CD Projekt Red to release another Witcher game anytime soon, as the Polish studio is now focusing on Cyberpunk 2077.

"It deserves some rest," Iwinski said about The Witcher series earlier this month. "The past 10 years the team has been working on swords and castles and medieval Slavic monsters. So I think it's time for some guns, androids, and some ammo. And a necropolis. So this is what we'll be working on."

CD Projekt Red isn't done supporting The Witcher 3 just yet, however. The first of the game's substantial-sounding paid add-ons, Hearts of Stone, will launch in October. Combined with the second expansion, Blood and Wine--coming in 2016--players can expect about 30 hours of additional gameplay.

After finishing MGSV and Halo 5 recently, then going back to the Northern Realms....well, it's no competition.

Witcher 3 is GOTY (unless Fallout is truly AMAZING).

I'll add to that number once I get a new PC. The Witcher 3 is probably the game I most want to buy in a near future.

Happy for them and feeling good one of those copies is mine.
A studio with this level of dedication to quality and fans deserves every ounce of success. I hope more developers (re)gain this level of control and self-determination.

Congrats! Witcher3 will kick fallout 4 out of GOTY stage. this game only compete with MGSV.

@ciri_molester: Okay, that's going too damn far. Fallout 4 will be GOTY...I can feel it! :P

@kamranmackey: You know, there's not just one GotY award, every site gives away GotY awards. There is the Bafta awards for video games, of course, but nothing nearly so definitive as the Oscars to decide which thing is best. Do you mean Fallout 4 will get GotY as in get the most GotY awards from different sites/magazines or that you'll probably like it yourself the most out all the 2015 games?

Congrats to you CD Projekt Red, you earned! And thank you for being a truly unique developer who cares about what gamers want, the Witcher 3 is one of the greatest games I've ever played and I love the series! Keep up the great work! XD

I hope they make something besides a Witcher game next, any other type of rpg from CD Projekt Red would be interesting to see. I was not impressed with the The Witcher 3 at all, very buggy and the combat was dreadfully simple, I beat the game on nightmare mode with such ease that it just left a bad taste in my mouth. It was a good game, just did not deserve a 10, but that is just my opinion. I think they do have the skills to make a great new game though.

@elitegamingguru: Are you even human? A buggy game that's bigger than Skyrim, yeah it will have bugs and I think it is a great game cool rare weapons and great visual fidelity! They are making a cyber-punk RPG called Cyberpunk 2077 I have high hopes for it.

@everson_rm:
--the combat systems are still laced with the original 2 game's PC keyboard and mouse controls
--which worked like magic on K&M
--it is a shame though
--people don't like 'new mechanics' as it is
--but
--when those new mechanics arent really all that much fun(when awkwardly converted to thumbsticks)

@apolloooo: IMHO, 1 and 2 played great on pc. The first one, (again imho) are the best one.

Avatar image for Yams1980

@everson_rm: ya the combat should have been better. I actually prefer Skyrims after you install some animation mods, blood mods and the combat realism mod it really makes the game more intense and dangerous. The combat in witcher 3 was a bit limited... although i loved being able to dodge roll which you can't do in skyrim... but there wasnt enough magic spells to use compared to Skyrim which had a lot more variety... and again, mods, there is virtually unlimited things you can add to Skyrim and can spend months and months just testing out different mods and it extends and enriches the game more than anything i seen in the witcher 3... which i love the dialog responses but its the main strong point of the game.

If the ever make a new series i hope it lets you create and customize a character from the start instead of having to play as a static character like in the witcher which i never liked playing as.

this company though is exceptional how it greated gog to provide drm free games. I hope they keep making good games and keep running that site well.

@Yams1980: You do realize Geralt is a Witcher, not a mage, with limited signs/ spells. Geralt is more round as you play through the series depending on your choices.

Avatar image for everson_rm
everson_rm

@Yams1980: Mods are great. Too bad that's not for me anymore. With the little time i have to play, i just like to sit and PLAY. Feeling old now... And the "pre-made" character for me is a turn off too.

CDPR is a man of a developer amongst children nowadays! When many developers have lost their way, we can hold up CDPR and say, see what you can do if you're in it for the right reasons and yet still make a great amount of money!

Great success story and speaks volumes about what gamers want and like unlike most of the other publishers/developers products and business models!
