GameSpot -- 10/10

"Where the Witcher 2 sputtered to a halt, The Witcher 3 is always in a crescendo, crafting battle scenarios that constantly one-up the last, until you reach the explosive finale and recover in the glow of the game's quiet denouement. But while the grand clashes are captivating, it is the moments between conflicts, when you drink with the local clans and bask in a trobairitz's song, that are truly inspiring." - Kevin VanOrd [Full review]

IGN -- 9.3/10

"Though the straightforward and fetch-quest-heavy main story overstays its welcome, the option of joyfully adventuring through a rich, expansive open world was always there for me when I'd start to burn out. Even if the plot isn't terribly interesting, the many characters who play a part in it are, and along with the excellent combat and RPG gameplay, they elevate The Witcher 3 to a plane few other RPGs inhabit." - Vince Ingenito [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.75/10

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt encompasses what I hope is the future of RPGs. It stands out for its wonderful writing, variety of quests and things to do in the world, and how your choices have impact in interesting ways. Usually something is sacrificed when creating a world this ambitious, but everything felt right on cue. I still think about some of my choices and how intriguing they turned out--for better or worse." - Kimberley Wallace [Full review]

Kotaku -- "Should You Play This Game? Yes"

"Wild Hunt is a grand adventure that feels distinctly of its time. It manages to set new standards for video game technology while accentuating the fleeting nature of technological achievement as an end unto itself. It is a worthy exploration of friendship and family, mixing scenes of great sorrow with scenes of ridiculous lustiness, tempering its melancholy with bright splashes of joy and merry monster guts. Come for the epic showdown between good and evil; stay for the unicorn sex." - Kirk Hamilton [Full review]

GOTY is either going to be MGS V, Bloodborne or Witcher 3. Maybe Mad Max and Just Cause 3 will be good as well.

@cboye18: BB hands down. You can't give it to Witcher 3 after all these control issues I am hearing about,that would be an absolute joke. Don't care how beautiful or big it is. It's gameplay that matters, and these devs need to realize that too (devs that are NOT Japanese).

@jdlok:

I've only played about 4 hours of Witcher 3 so far but based on what I've seen I'd give GOTY to it before I would BB. I didn't see all the hype of that game. Felt like a Souls ripoff and I didn't see the hype in the Souls games, lol. To each his own, though.

I could, however, see MGS possibly running away with GOTY. If it gets the reception that MGS4 got then it will be a no-brainer. We'll just have to see.

I've played them (although I haven't finished them) and still disagree. I'm glad you enjoy them though. They just weren't for me.

@akassassin11:

Maybe you're right. I'm usually willing to learn different style of games if I feel that the time spent learning them is enjoyable, though. Had I more time to invest into games, maybe I would've "trudged" through the learning curve to finish the game and have a different opinion. I just didn't feel it was worth investing all that time into.

@jdlok@cboye18: Yeah I'd personally prefer gameplay (precise controls and movement) over story anytime. The only real thing I like about the Witcher are the mythological monster hunts.

@jdlok@gottago42: There are some weird moments when you go to loot things, getting in the right spot so the 'X' appears to be able to loot can be tricky. That and the camera default speed/acceleration is a bit high, which took a bit of getting used to.

@TrialMonkey@jdlok@gottago42: That's a problem I'm experiencing with Witcher 2 as well.

@jdlok@gottago42: combat is lacking in Batman games; it's a hit-and-miss. I never liked it.

Hit and miss? Are you a casual or you're just not getting something? I really hope it's the latter.

I prefer the Witcher 3. Batman games feel too much automated and almost like a dance.

Avatar image for jdlok
JDlok

@frozenuxx@jdlok@frozenuxx@cboye18: I prefer that too. Hey, why did you tell me to sell the game man! I might dig that. I am really just worried about the all round movement of the character, I hear it's very Jerky, like driving a tank. I like to float like a butterfly.

Avatar image for cboye18

@frozenuxx@cboye18@jdlok@gottago42: I think combat in Batman is functional, just not fun/satisfying.

Nothing is worse then AC combat, though.

Game is excellent, aside from the combat; I have to be reminded that how dull the story, characters and quests were in Kingdoms of Amalur, very few games can compare with its fun and satisfying combat mechanics and class/upgrade system.

Avatar image for TrialMonkey

@cboye18: I like the combat, there is a certain amount of managing where your enemies are to avoid taking too many hits. I honestly miss some of the "must use heavy attacks against opponent X and fast attacks against opponent Y" from Witcher 1.

Avatar image for cboye18
cboye18

@TrialMonkey@cboye18: I don't know; I think the lack of combo's are hurting my experience with the game. I'd prefer that much over just dodging around and know when to strike. Maybe a combination of the two would've been nice.

Avatar image for smokeless_0225

@cboye18:

I'm glad to see a comparison to KoA. I totally agree with you. I think it was one of the most under-rated games of all time (although the acting was lacking). I called the resemblance to a friend of mine (who also enjoys KoA) before the game ever released.

Avatar image for cboye18

@smokeless_0225@cboye18: Yes seriously man bless the developers who made the combat system in that game; I'd just hope someone or some new IP could take over those mechanics as well.

Avatar image for morderwrath

@nastyhotpocket: Well open world as a concept design was around before the Elder scrolls a loong time ago but I suppose Skyrim somehow set the bar in today's market(i HATE that game btw) imo it was the only game of it's kind to be released to market at the time, kinda seems to be the trend these days-make a Genre fan starve for a new game, and let the sonsumer go nuts into buying anything they can get their hands on at some point finally..I have not played the W3 btw, ive seen enough to know it's just a game thats been done before.CD PROJET RED dis an excellent job though.My issue being the combat stinks and from what's paramount around the board is load/FPS issues and glitchs i dunno if i will buy it.

I played The Witcher 2 on X360 but I couldn't get into it. I feel like it's my loss and I regret it because the plot and world was so intriguing. But the combat and controls kept me from finishing it. I felt there were too many functions forced onto a controller. It seemed like every button did three different things.

I knew before starting it that the combat system was unusual and would take some getting used to but l thought I eventually would. I couldn't. Not with those controls.

So I'm tempted to try The Witcher 3 on PS4 but I'm concerned that I may have the same experience.

Avatar image for theninjaguydon

@blackx114: Same issue with TW2 for me, and was a concern for TW3. While it's not perfect, the combat is much improved. Not as good as Skyrim or even Dragon Age for that matter. More challenging, just not perfect but like I said, much improved. Shouldn't stop me from enjoying this game thoroughly and I played for about 11 hours now.

@blackx114: Played about 6 hours on PS4. Yes there are a lot of buttons heavy strike, fast strike, use magic, throw bomb, block, dodge, roll. It was a little bit of a learning curve at first, but by the time I got out of the first(prologue?) area I had the hang of it and when to use which. There isn't more than any one function per button in combat though.

Avatar image for BruceWayneJr
BruceWayneJr

@TrialMonkey@blackx114: "Learning curve" is correct, and I've never heard anyone who doesn't like these games say that they got over that learning curve hump. Once you learn to play these games, they're a joy. But there's nothing wrong with this game playing differently from all the others. People say they want something new, and then complain when they don't get the same old thing.
