I really think Witcher 3 takes it, but I'm sad to see Soma didn't get a single nominee. Also I love CDPR but I think Kojima should win developer award. He fought Konami during production cause they wanted to make it into something like Gears of Wars with tons of shooting and mindless action, in order to "appeal to a wider audience" backstabbing fans. Kojima shut them down for trying to ruin his game, his legacy and trying to disrespect his fans. This was the reason Konami kicked Kojima to the curve. He went out like a champ. He deserves that award.

deciding between Witcher 3 and Bloodborne would be really hard for me.

Fallout 4 was good, but not that good.

@addamthecomic:The song in Witcher 3 "Priscilla's Song" is amazing and tops Fallout 4 by a mile. Although it sounds much better in the original language it was written in... Polish I think?

The Witcher 3, MGGV and FO4 are my top picks this year, although The Witcher 3 delivered the best in-game experience for me. I hope W3 will shine on the top as example for future RPG/adventure games :-)

I'm a huge Fallout 3 fan (favorite experience until this year). I bought a PS4 when I saw the E3 press release for part 4. Not knowing anything about the Witcher 3, I bought it to play something as I waited for Fallout 4. I fell in love with it. Even read the book "The Last Wish" (i don't like fantasy books). It pretty much ruined Fallout 4 for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying Fallout 4, but the dialogue is sooo bad. Especially the lead character. All the conversations seem broken and empty. I keep imagining actors in a recording booth with coffee and a clipboard stacked with their various lines that don't mean shit to them. Where as The Witcher 3 totally engrossed me with the story and acting, like I was watching an HBO series. And the gameplay and world was top notch.

@daebiya: It makes me laugh people hyped up Fallout so much, and I played both Witcher 3 AND Fallout 4. I played Witcher 3 completely, through when the DLC came out after I completed it in May, so I could refresh myself.

So I probably played Witcher 3 up until about 2 weeks before Fallout came out, and it ruined Fallout for me, no doubt. Witcher 3 is a stunning game, and almost puts every game to shame this year. Fallout was absolutely mediocre after playing Witcher 3. The story in Fallout is extremely weak, the character interaction was basic, the graphics were terrible, the bestiary was extremely limited ( 8 different names for the same monster? Seriously...), the soundtrack was average, the dialogue options felt emotionless and the combat was outdated and inconsistent, VATS needs to be removed once and for all.

The only good things about Fallout were the crafting and the character build, but it wasn't enough to keep me playing after platinum.

Witcher 3 kept me playing for weeks and weeks, and again for at least 3 weeks the second time in October.

I can seriously see Witcher 3 winning all 7 awards, and rightfully so.

@heavengirl15:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjWOy6ioVHI here's the story behind Bloodborne.

And if you're going to bash it, it would help if you spelt it correctly in your initial post. Also, you can't be very familiar with a game after playing 11 hours of it. How far did you go? What bosses did you manage to defeat? How many places have you discovered? What level are you? This game is one that makes you think and makes you connect the dots between events that occur and people you encounter as well as items you collect. It is also a great test of skill and your control of combat. 11 hours is not nearly enough time to have a full understanding for a game like Bloodborne. My boyfriend is on his 8th play through of the game and I have put in 50 hours and I still want to explore more. There is so much to kill, so much explore and so much of the story that you have to connect through playing.

@jetstream_jill: I am so sorry for mispelling this below average game.

Its frame rate is among the worst, and my point about its poorly done story remains since not even you who has played it over 50 hrs can explain it, and need to include a link to a youtube video. Your description is so vague and general that it can even apply to all COD games.

I had forgotten this boring game after 11 hrs of constantly dying and just to find the enemies respawn at the same location. I understand that Games like this apply to specific gamers, but the only reason Keighley nominated this game is because he is a well known ps4 fanboy. Also, not even the huge 30M ps4 fanbase supported the game as the game sold roughly 2M copies.

If you enjoy the game fine, but I was using it as an example of why this game of the year award by Geoff Keighley is just a joke.

@heavengirl15: It's not a below average game, you're just a below average gamer. Sorry you don't like challenges and complex stories that actually make you think. Also, I gave a vague description because there's so much in the story that I don't have time to spoon feed it to you.

@jetstream_jill: Instead of looking for meaningless talking points why dont you share one part of the game where the story gives you memorable moments, where you want to kill the next boss to see what unfolds next.

Now the reason you cannot explain the story it's because there is not one.

The game is average in my opinion, the character models seem to be made of clay with stiff long legs, the enviroments are motionless 1080p paints, the frame rate is all over the place, the combat is repetitive just like the enemies, and the maps are small giving the impression that we are playing a total linear game. I could put up with that if the game had a great narrative or story, but it either does not exist or it is simply poorly implemented.

With that said, do not worry Geoff Keighley has you covered he would not leave this game forgotten. He is a Ps4 fanboy and therefore he will include this game as a candidate. I am just surprised that he did not nominate Rocket League :)

For me it has to be Witcher 3 but MGS:5 is a close contender, I feel like the story approach was a bit wrong from MGS:5 it could have been much stronger on its delivery me personally I didn't enjoy them making stories in the fashion that you just select them and you can't start from a new, whilst you can replay missions again it just doesn't make me want to do it.

So yeah MGS:5 format with the story for me was very messy, could have been better and I'd say that alone is the cause for it not being the one I think is GOTY.

Best Score/Soundtrack

No favourite all did well in this category

Best Performance

Have not played enough of these titles. Geralt out of the 2 i did play but don't know enough for a valid opinion

Best Shooter

Have no played Halo the others were not good enough for an Award even if they are the best of this year.

Well Battlefront maybe but who knows has yet to release.

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider

Both great games

Take your pick This holiday season is Green but 2016 is looking Blue

esports Game of the Year

R6 Siege?!

Considering it's actually a 2015 E-sports orientated game.

Not a casual shooter with a big prize pot to get promoted as one. Nor a solid old shooter that happens to still dominate E-sports.

Witcher 3 for sure

Graphics, content, combat and story all really enjoyable

The only other game I could see as being a competitor for real would be Bloodborne

and as for Fallout 4.

Not even gonna bother go through saying what I thought was good about it.

Respect to Bethesda though who managed to sell millions of copies from a reworked Skyrim.

Not a lot of companies that manages to have such a sale success because of a hype

@kartuzia: I also feel Bethesda is running on they past credit with a totally outdated engine that cant produce a quest without a bug. They should have an award for "best game based on hype"...they will win that one at least.

Monster Hunter for best Mobile/ Portable game.

Shame it wasn't taken in consideration for the main GotY Award, but I'll take what I can get :)

Guess it's a strange game to consider at any rate, because many of us was playing it in 2014 lol.

I've been playing Fallout 4 for about 15-20 hours now and it is SO much fun and, despite what some have said, I find the world to be really intriguing. With that being said, I'd give my vote to The Witcher 3 any days.

Where Fallout 4 feels like it retreads a lot of ground and strips a lot of the RPG elements that made previous iterations so interesting, The Witcher 3 does so much more to push the genre forward. For the first time in several years, I found a game that I will always look back on with fond memories. In my 90+ hour playthrough, The Witcher 3 constantly amazed me and I'm seriously hoping that CD Projekt Red get every award they deserve.

Bring on Cyberpunk 2077.

Gotta laugh at Halo not getting a mention for e-sports title given how much 343 whored themselves out to try and make halo 5 an esports title. In the meantime pissing all the halo fans that loved casual gaming by removing splitscreen and offering nothing but a shitty co-op centric 4 hour campaign to do offline.

I'm rooting for Witcher 3 though. This game has almost ruined every other rpg to me, and left me shitty as hell due to all the late nights I had playing it, it was that good. The graphics (despite e3 downgrade) are amazing, and the story and narrative are just the best.

As for Action game, Batman is lucky to get a mention due to the crappy PC port and its batmobile-centric, borefest, utterly predictable plot.

@freeryu: It still is dam funny considering the budget that MS have put behind this; and it will be even funnier if when next year they still don't get the nomination. Halo is the 7th FPS game in the franchise so if 343 spent some effort making a game alot of their existing fans liked then it could have found itself in the GOTY category.

@charliebrownnz: I don't see how it would be funny in anyway :/ Halo is the most skill based FPS on console and a nomination won't change that. If they made a game their existing fans liked more than it wouldn't draw in new people. They have to switch it up in order to continue to evolve and not do the same old thing every game.

@freeryu: You are correct that they need to evolve to bring in new fans. But its risky to do that at the expense of your current market which 343 did (probably unsuccessfully). If the game wasn't badged halo it would probably be received alot more positively. Its marketing 101, an unhappy customer will tell 10 people about their bad experience vs a happy customer will on average tell 1 person about their good experience.

As a spurned halo fan (I admit it, I'm butthurt), I lap up every bit of bad news about halo 5. I want to see that favourite franchise of mine for 14 years treated better and if 343 get humiliated they might actually give the series what it deserves. I want to see the game fail going down the path it has deviated to, that way 343 will have to change direction and bring back the roots of the halo game which has always been campaign focused and couch friendly with great, innovative and couch-friendly multi-player, both of which can be enjoyed without having to rely on an online audience.

This is all my opinion and personal feelings so take what I say with a grain of salt. If you enjoy the game then that is good for you, I just wish they could have made a game that accommodated positive additions without the negative subtractions it made.

Anyway - what is your pick for game of the year, and besides halo, what would you have chosen? nb, as a halo fan, I would have always picked halo for GOTY prior to halo 5.
