Witcher 3 Dev Teases New Game for 2016, Another AAA RPG Coming Before 2021

Plus, CD Projekt reveals The Witcher series overall has passed 20 million copies sold.

In addition to talking about Cyberpunk 2077 today at its earnings briefing, CD Projekt announced that the Witcher series to date has sold 20 million copies and teased that developer CD Projekt Red will release a new game in 2016. This is in addition to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Blood and Wine expansion, which is scheduled to launch later this year.

Interestingly, the unannounced CD Projekt Red game will be a "new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio." You can see the slide from the briefing below.

DualShockers attended the call and reports that president Adam Kicinski said CD Projekt doesn't plan to talk about the nature of the unannounced game today. Also during the briefing, Kicinski teased that CD Projekt is "experimenting" and working on projects that “nobody has ever done before."

Back in 2013, CD Projekt Red announced plans to open an office in Krakow, Poland, putting the team to work there on "smaller" but "premium-quality," projects, estimated to be 20 hours in length. It is possible that one of these games is the one referenced during the presentation today.

Another slide from today's report revealed that, in addition to Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red plans to release another "AAA RPG title" in the 2017-2021 window. Kicinski declined to say anything at all about what this game might be.

2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the last game in the series to feature Geralt in the lead role. While The Witcher 4 may not be coming very soon, CD Projekt Red's Marcin Iwinski said in a previous interview that the world of The Witcher is ripe with storytelling opportunities.

"We definitely are not annualizing a franchise or anything--it's about the experience," he said about The Witcher. "The world of The Witcher is gigantic and it's great to tell these stories, but I don't know when this will happen."

There appears to be a clear business opportunity for another Witcher game, as The Witcher 3 has sold more than 6 million copies. The 20 million figure referenced earlier includes sales of The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011) and The Witcher 3 (2015).

@Intocable: Games are only going to get more advanced and godly, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by stopping.

2021? Dudes......DUDES!

The rumors that Cyberpunk might be out in 2016 were just so very cruel.

@olddadgamer: 2017-2021 = two big RPGs. One of them is Cyberpunk 2077. I think it will be released in 2017 or 2018.

@Vojtass: Man, I hope it's 2017.

By the way, am I the only one who looks at the fact we're actually talking about what we're gonna be playing in 2021 and feels really old?

Can't wait for Blood and Wine. Hearts of Stone was already one of the best DLC's I've ever played, the story in it is so damn good, and I'm expecting only better from B&W

This is a concerning time to be honest. Now that CDPR have made it big with Witcher 3, I hope they wisely make the transition to big company status, and keep their integrity rather than let greed take over. We shall see in the coming years.

They say power corrupts. It's often the case.

@billzihang: Considering they're doing DLC right (that is, not rushing it out and having it be, like 20 hours of game and not just costumes), so far, so good.

A bigger concern for me isn't power: it's the fact their success makes them a prime target for a big publisher to buy. I mean, ok, 20 million of a franchise is good and all, but that's still enough that a Ubisoft, 2K or (gasp) EA could make a pretty lucrative offer to buy them out.

Stay independent, guys. Stay independent.

@olddadgamer: They also say that they are planning to buy some of their shares back. I'm thinking that they are planning to stay independent, but there is always the possibility of a hostile takeover (Which happens a lot in gaming industry, sadly). So I guess they want to mitigate against that by buying their shares back; which shows me that their hearts are on the right side. Hopefully their actions will be enough for that.

Super excited, and can't wait to see what the new RPG is.

But, hopefully, Cyberpunk doesn't release in 2021 or something like that.

Avatar image for solidsolo

@battlestreak: highly doubt it's anything near in scope to what the Witcher is. probably an "indie" type experiment game or mobile game

@solidsolo: What? The new RPG?
