Witcher 3 Dev Teases New Game for 2016, Another AAA RPG Coming Before 2021

Plus, CD Projekt reveals The Witcher series overall has passed 20 million copies sold.

In addition to talking about Cyberpunk 2077 today at its earnings briefing, CD Projekt announced that the Witcher series to date has sold 20 million copies and teased that developer CD Projekt Red will release a new game in 2016. This is in addition to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Blood and Wine expansion, which is scheduled to launch later this year.

Interestingly, the unannounced CD Projekt Red game will be a "new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio." You can see the slide from the briefing below.

DualShockers attended the call and reports that president Adam Kicinski said CD Projekt doesn't plan to talk about the nature of the unannounced game today. Also during the briefing, Kicinski teased that CD Projekt is "experimenting" and working on projects that “nobody has ever done before."

Back in 2013, CD Projekt Red announced plans to open an office in Krakow, Poland, putting the team to work there on "smaller" but "premium-quality," projects, estimated to be 20 hours in length. It is possible that one of these games is the one referenced during the presentation today.

Another slide from today's report revealed that, in addition to Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red plans to release another "AAA RPG title" in the 2017-2021 window. Kicinski declined to say anything at all about what this game might be.

2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the last game in the series to feature Geralt in the lead role. While The Witcher 4 may not be coming very soon, CD Projekt Red's Marcin Iwinski said in a previous interview that the world of The Witcher is ripe with storytelling opportunities.

"We definitely are not annualizing a franchise or anything--it's about the experience," he said about The Witcher. "The world of The Witcher is gigantic and it's great to tell these stories, but I don't know when this will happen."

There appears to be a clear business opportunity for another Witcher game, as The Witcher 3 has sold more than 6 million copies. The 20 million figure referenced earlier includes sales of The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011) and The Witcher 3 (2015).

Fingers crossed for the new Witcher protagonist to be a mage and for the game to have an underworld focus. The parts in Novigrad in Wild Hunt were amongst the best.

That's still quite a while to wait for Cyberpunk 2077 considering how long it's been in development for already. And they churned out Wild Hunt pretty quickly.

If Projekt Redd can pull off anything even remotely close as great & fulfilling as The Witcher 3 was, I'll def buy it week one. Anxious to hear more about Cyberpunk tho!

@tunaman44: Hehe must be quite different the way we approached the game :p I have 120 hours in and i'm still at 36% completed :( Guess I spent way too much time on side missions and riding instead of fast travelling.

@Starry_Notion: Same here hahaha, about 150 in and I still easily have another 60+ hours ahead of me, and that's excluding any of the DLC!

Such an amazing adventure the game is.

Before 2021 eh...? I like the vagueness lol, better than all the constant delays these days.

I'm interested to see what they're cooking up with this new game in 2016. Obviously very excited for Cyberpunk 2077 but there's no point in even thinking about that game yet, I don't wanna ride to hype train to disappointment town... or whatever.

I'd be keen to see CD Projekt do a Telltale/Life is Strange style story focused game.

I love shiny graphics in games like The Witcher 3 but big open world games like that take a long time. They've obviously got some great writers on staff so if they went for a simpler visual approach, they could tell some awesome stories. I'm not a fan of the episodic model but that's not necessary for the format.

Avatar image for ef56sd
EF56SD

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: I think that would lessen the quality of the game.

Avatar image for bbq_R0ADK1LL
bbq_R0ADK1LL

@ef56sd: They should absolutely keep making big AAA games but if they're going to throw some extra projects in after the writing team has finished their job than it could be something cool in addition to their bigger budget titles.

Avatar image for ef56sd
EF56SD

@bbq_R0ADK1LL: Yeah, as long as it doesn't take the talent from there AAA games then it could be a great idea. Especially if it could be incorporated into a their AAA titles, in the same way BioWare lets you carry over stories to sequels.

So we'll see Cyberpunk 2077 in a couple years and then Witcher IV will launch in 2021. This studio is so talented. I hope they don't get bought out by someone.

@CrusaderForever: There won't be any Witcher games.

@dostunuz Don't know where you got your info from, the studio said themselves that they think it would be unfair NOT to do another Witcher game:

@dostunuz: Not true. The studio has said they will be doing more Witcher game, it just wont be Geralt's story, Witcher 3 was the end of his story.

Oh I would love another CD Projekt Red game this year! 20 hours as a small game too is so brilliant I just can't wait to see what it is! 2D Platform RTS game? (Albeit Child of Light was kinda that).. I'd get anything as long as it's not a mobile game.. Also the prospect of getting Cypberpunk in like 2017-18 and a potential (hope it is anyway) Witcher spin-off game around 2020 makes the next few years of CD Projekt Red rather exciting!

Avatar image for hystavito

@BelaidKL: Don't worry it's not a mobile game, they're porting Kim Kardashian's game to PC and consoles as an HD remaster.

Witcher 3 sold much more than 6 million units, becouse these numbers are only until early july 2015, and non digital copies. I myself bought it digital late July.

Avatar image for Vojtass

@dantas: Those 6-million numbers included digital distribution, because it's a basic sales model for PC. TW was a great success for GOG.com, sister company of CDPR.

Hopefully their new game will have a world that is a little less generic and more interactive. Every interior and exterior in the Witcher was the same and very generic, hence, boring exploration. The game could use some puzzles too, because it's boring for people who aren't hot for Gerald.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@jdlok: It did have moderate puzzles to solve, like figuring out how to get rid of a werewolf who can't die etc

I'm looking forward seeing the non witcher related products. Didn't care for the story of The Witcher, but even if you don't like it; you can see the care they take with their products. So looking forward to the next thing. :)
