Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Mod Tools Controversy

"At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received official modding support this week, but not everyone is happy with the available tools. Released Friday was the "Modkit" for The Witcher 3.

No Caption Provided

It's a toolsuite that allows players to modify the game in a number of crazy ways (check out the image and videos below), but some fans say it's not enough.

Instead, what they were expecting was a new version of CD Projekt Red's "REDkit," a more fleshed out mod tools package that's currently available for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

And for good reason. In a January 2014 interview, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski said the developer was "looking to release the REDkit sometime after [The Witcher 3] launches for the modding community."

But, when announcing The Witcher 3's Modkit this week, CD Projekt Red admitted that "the modding tools we are releasing are not an editor. They're meant for people who are somewhat experienced with modding software and are designed to make creating mods easier."

Now, CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot has spoken out on Twitter to address the situation. He says the developer has no plans to release a new version of the REDkit for The Witcher 3.

A fan asked, "Any ETA yet for a Full Featured TW3 REDkit? Maybe after the AddOn's? Or is this (no offense) everything we get?" Momot replied: "This is the mod support for the Wild Hunt. At this moment we are not planning to release anything else."

Plenty of other Witcher 3 players have also taken to Twitter to voice their discontent over the current mod tools. Momot offered the same response as above to all questions about the available mod tools.

@archav3n: Pc accounts for literally 1/3 of sales, the other two thirds are some split between the xbox one and the PS4, probably PS4 heavy because xbox's don't sell for crap.

How can you compare two platforms (ps4, xbox one) to one platform (PC) are you a retard, or do you just want everyone to think you are??

Can't people really understand what CDPR doing? They will release their own expansions first before they allow the community to edit the game. Don't expect a real editor until CDPR makes as much money as they can from sales first. I thought it's obvious.

Exactly. Anyone with little brain should know this. They want to sell expansions as much as they can.

Old CDPR apparently died in 2014.

I don't know this company anymore. Guess EA secretly bought them, renaming them soon to Bioware Poland.

@fvckgabenewell: If it means "consoles are limited, so we'll propagate their limitations to PC modding tools as well" - that's very bad. If it means "we'll figure out how to bring modding tools to consoles" - that's good, but I don't see a point to worry about "partitioning" of users. MS and Sony aren't friendly to modding and they control their OSes in highly unhealthy manner. So CDPR should focus on modding tools for PC first, instead of this "partitioning" thing. If it's the former case, I worry CDPR is increasingly becoming console oriented company and their PC roots are gone. News of "here is Modkit, Redkit is not planned" are bad, if they are justified with "we don't want to partition users". Somehow I suspect that as usual, CDPR won't clarify to the community what's going on.

Honestly if they said they would release the new redkit they should release it. I mean they had a pretty rep so far with the free DLC and all that. but i can understand why a lot of people would be upset. then again the witcher 2 mods wasnt a HUGE thing on things like the nexus so whatever. but it would have been nice to have some more tools for a game like this.............oh welllllllllll. long as mod tools come to fallout 4 ill be happy,.

the witcher 3 is great but i just hate the FOV Is too big. as in every single past witcher game lol

Cry baby fans once again doing what they do best - crying ! Keep crying folks. CDPR doesn't owe you anything. They made a masterpiece of a game which I am sure many are already enjoying. Mods are mainly for 'expanding' the experience. We need to live with whatever CDPR puts out. If this is all they can provide the modding community with, that has to be good enough. People will always complain no matter what. That's a cancer of humanity.

Reason they don't want to give us the full tool is they want to be able to make the DLC and charge us for it. With the old tools you could literally make new quests if you wanted to. Add content but they don't want the customers with that privilege. They want you to buy there stuff.

@Ripper_TV: This is way late but rather late than never. The REDkit was launched too late and didn't have a big following because of the late release and it wasn't a very user-friendly mod program to use. It took above average experience in modding/game dev. to create anything substantial. There was one large mod that was being worked on by Philipp Weber, which IIRC helped him land a developer position at CDPR as a quest designer, the mod is called Lykaon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOnVgzr_Dnk

@falloutwanderer: OK, thanks. Although, gotta say that passionate gamers-modders aren't stopped by the lack of modding tools altogether, let alone late release of such. One example that comes to mind is Resident Evil 2, which is 20 years old now almost, and is being modded heavily by the community even today.

I don't get it, what else other than some mean of unpacking the resource files do you need? That and some image editing and notepad++ should be all any modder needs, did they expect a fully graphical editor somehow? (I have not played with Witcher 2's REDkit...)

I think it would be cool if they released more mod tools, but I can't blame them for not doing so. The Witcher 2 was an amazing game with more mod support (from what I'm reading here) and yet the only truly decent mod for it was a combat rebalance mod and.... that's it.

Modders did literally nothing else impressive to the game. I'm not really sure why.

Mainly because the kit was released too late, and incompatibilities with other mods. Not to mention they didn't support it for that long.

As much as I would like different mods, people need to understand that a developer doesn't have to let you mod the game that they put years and millions of dollars into. So take what you are given, do the best you can and shut the hell up.

Don't you think that gives at least a bit more weight to the complaints? And remember CDPR has a great image and is thought of as the company that does what it says it will do. Although what we have here is not a completely clear definite promise, I think it's fair to be a little upset.

@james090162: That's all true but it can often be in the developer's interest to release a good mod tool. A healthy mod community can really extend the life of a game. It can get people to keep buying the game for a longer period of time and it builds goodwill that can be capitalized on in future games.

@Vojtass: Ah, you mean making money? Story expansions can wait until the REDkit is there. Only a few years back they said themselves that there shouldn't be paid content for their games. Well, who cares I guess...

And nobody said that they can't go on vacation. But they'll come back. And then they can make these damn mod tools like they promised. Simple.

@LordCrash88: Story expansions can't wait, because Fallout will gain much attention very soon. I have never heard anyone from CDPR who said that all additional game content should be free. It was always about small size DLC. Expansions are something else and should be sold, because they require a lot of work. Simple.

@Vojtass: That has nothing to with Fallout 4. I don't get that competition thing at all. Every RPG fan who enjoys this kind of game will buy both no matter what.

And by the way, the second expansion won't come out before 2016 no matter what.

Story expansions - the whole idea - are imo an easy cash-in. DLC in big, nothing more. The decision to make them in the first place was the wrong decision. It's not the CDPR I know anymore. It's a first and foremost profits-driven company in which their original vision only comes second. Understandable given their current size but still sad. They will be remembered - for TW 1 and 2.

@LordCrash88: Expansions are connected with release of Fallout 4 and every other big title that will come out in Q4. Players won't buy everything, too many games will be released in the end of the year. Those additions have big marketing importance, they will grab attention of players, who haven't bought the main game yet. Expansion (1st one) is also aimed at journalists, who will decide about GOTY awards. Everybody knows that games released in Q4 have more chances in this race than games of first half of the year. TW3 expansion will be a reminder. Cash from additions alone are important, but not as much as you think, because both are quite cheap. If CDPR would be interested in money only, they would release small packs with 3 small quest each. Fast, easy and pricey. That would be an awful decision. So no, you're wrong - expansions are not easy cash-in. They require a lot of work, much more than you can imagine.

Light a candle. Maybe you will notice more colors than black and white.

@Vojtass: They really care about GOTY awards? How poor is that tbh?!

And no, they can't releease 3 small packs becuase that would be a clear violation of their usual good guys preaching and that would piss off a lot of people and would only return in bad press and an even more upset community.

So expansions are the easiest way for them to make cash. That's just a fact. And I know pretty well how much work that is, at least as good as you think you do...

And indeed, there are shades of grey between black and white. I never said that they suck balls. But I call them out for bullshit and bad behaviour no matter what. Just because somebody was good in the past and made good games doesn't mean he gets a free pass for bullshit.

@LordCrash88: Every company that makes big budget games and invests huge money in marketing is interested in GOTY. Is this weird? Of course not. GOTY means great publicity, free advertisement. "Easiest way to make a cash" aka expansion still isn't easy to make. That's a fact. I would love more companies to make expansions instead awful overpriced DLC packs with nothing substantial.

Good guys, huh? You don't really know them. CDPR's public image =/= CDPR itself. Dark side is there since the very beginning in 2002. They have many sins, that people don't remember or never heard about. E.g. release of TW1 collector's edition was a gigantic fvck-up. Crunch practices are pretty old too. Company is not a friend and never will be one. It is show business - some devs put their heart at the top, but it's still business.

Devs really need to watch what they say. They are getting as bad as politicians changing their mind as there is no point trying to shut the gate once the horse has bolted.

. This is obviously more to do with appeasing Microsoft and Sony as console owners can't mod the game so PC gamers now have to suffer not being able to fully mod the world as a result.

They made a great game here and i am sure the expansions and new game plus mode will be fine but years from now people would still be playing the game if it was as open ended and friendly to the modding community as Bethesda has been with Skyrim.

Will this hurt their bottom line though? Doubtful as they have still created a very good game that they keep updating with regular content at least for now however it does mean it will have a shorter life than Skyrim and eventually be forgotten as a result.
