Witcher 3 Dev Responds to Fans Upset About Xbox One-Exclusive Physical Items

CD Projekt Red co-founder explains why the Xbox One Collector's Edition is getting exclusive cards and a cloth map.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has responded to fans who are upset that the Xbox One Collector's Edition of the game is getting exclusive physical items.

All Collector's Editions of the game include an artbook, a figure of the game's hero Geralt fighting a Griffin, stickers, game map, soundtrack, steelbook, medallion, and a collector's box. A cloth map and two decks of Gwent cards, which you can play like The Witcher 3's in-game competitive card game, are exclusive specifically to the the Xbox One Collector's Edition.

"Why are we doing this? We need the support of partners to make our game visible worldwide," CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński said in a statement to Eurogamer. "This should hopefully translate to better sales, which will in consequence allow us to do what we have been doing for the last 10 years, i.e. reinvest this money to make more great RPGs, while still sticking to our values."

Iwiński said that CD Projekt Red will keep its promise not to have any platform or retailer-exclusive DLC, and that the company always tries to "bend over backwards" to give customers the best, DRM-free editions of its games regardless of platform.

"If you still consider that adding two decks of Gwent cards and a map of the in-game world to the Xbox One CE equals us betraying our values and not fulfilling our promises, well, it does make us sad, but the final call is always yours to make," he said. "Still, I do hope that what we offer is unique and we can ask you to give us the benefit of the doubt. We have more great things to announce for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the coming months and I promise you won't be disappointed (yes, yes, there are no more exclusives coming)."

The Witcher 3 launches on February 24 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. For more on the game, check out this six minute gameplay video from Gamescom and our latest preview.

Wow, how childish and unrealistic are people, I don't think the devs need to respond at all, just seems like pandering to crying babies. "Waaah waah wah I'm not getting the toys they are mommy..."

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> I also don't think it was necessary for CDPR to respond. Those who switch from CE to regular edition should do so because it's now inferior to the XB1 version. If they have XB1, they could consider getting that. They certainly shouldn't do it as a threat or out of anger. I cancelled mine (there is no real need to pre-order regular edition) after letting myself calm down

Avatar image for darthvandersag

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not a question of toys you see. It has always been a matter of principle. People hold CDPR in very high regard and this does not become them. Today it's a few physical items, tomorrow Cyberpunk is an Xbox exclusive.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You're kinda forgetting that company policies, CEO's and staff change although their names and brands might stay the same. It's all about profit and growth, it's not about pandering to a few people who stick to one system. Business is rarely ethical even to the consumer. It's even possible that MS bought shares in the company for all we know. Destiny has PS4 exclusive content you know, I'm not signing petitions for it to come on PC or complaining about X1 not having that content, if I cared so much I'd by a PS4 right now, but there's a bit more to be concerned about in the world than crying about something that isn't essential to the gaming experience.

@darthvandersag @XNEXUS666X LOL Cybberpunk a console exclusive, FAT CHANCE

Also I like how sad it is that people are content to get walked over. So if I as a paying customer have a problem with this, I have no right to complain or I am sad? What kind of reasoning is that? Really so you have never had a complaint with a product in your life, and if you do you don't say anything right?

Avatar image for Vodoo

Whatever happened to that Cyberpunk game they announced 2yrs ago? It's like they focus only on Witcher now. I'm not complaining, Witcher is great, but I was really interested in that other game. It looked very unique.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

<< LINK REMOVED >> They're still working on it. They don't spam people with hype until their game is ready, unlike some companies.

Avatar image for B0NES96

<< LINK REMOVED >> Cyberpunk is still being developed last I heard. They're talking about Witcher more to keep people's focus on that game since it's coming out sooner. Once Witcher 3 is released, they'll probably start releasing more information about Cyberpunk.

Avatar image for darthvandersag

<< LINK REMOVED >> Apologies for being the devil's advocate here, but I would not very surprised if it were released as an Xbox exclusive or something.

I guess Microsoft's new marketing campaign is "We make it rain"

This makes me sad because I really like this company. But cmon, really, its one thing to have some stupid costumes avaliable as dlc only at certain retailers but to make the actual collector's edition different is a load of crap. Its a collector's edition, ie mainly bought by people who collect, those who play the game will just get the regular one. So know you have to specifically get the xbox one, to have the "best" one, or get two. That is crap.

Also the one with is poor sells can hardly help you get more exposure or anything else. Stop lying, xbox paid to have this stuff thrown in, otherwise it would be in the ps4 version only.

Avatar image for divinejester

For the record I have the Black Edition of Witcher 2, and will get an xbox one, but I prefer my CEs on the PS systems because they hold their value better. I always just get the regular edition on the xbox unit.

Avatar image for deactivated-5851d30844ac7

Heck if i care, at least when i get this on GOG i won't have any DRM to worry about, Ubisoft, take note.

Someone needs a bottle of warm milk .....

Avatar image for Yeahright2

This just seems unnecessary to me. The whole point of snagging exclusive stuff in this way is to try and get people that own both consoles to side with yours and get them to associate the franchise with your system. PC gamers, I'm sure are sticking with PC. And console gamers, well Xbox had the only version of the witcher 2. So they have a huge head start on sony in the association regard.

Maybe they thing this will be a system seller for both and are trying to minimize converts? I dunno, even that seems far fetched.

Avatar image for liquorun

lol are the kiddies crying over a few physical collector items? That's really one of the the saddest things I've heard in awhile. Poor nerd babies.

Avatar image for day3002

only solution to CDPR stupid decision is to not buy X1 version.

Avatar image for Bowser05

It is a little unfortunate...but I have a simple solution. Buy the X1 CE. Sell the game for it's full $60 value. Purchase standard PS4 version. Win-win.

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> Good idea, but who's gonna buy a full priced game second-hand from private party?

Avatar image for VersaType

Seriously who is outraged by this? If you are, you're pathetic.

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> I was. Well, less outraged more angry. The anger wasn't because I thought CDPR had no right to do this; they have every right. I was angry because I wanted a CE but getting an inferior version for the same price is beneath me.

Avatar image for Yeahright2

Not outrage for me. Just disappointment. CDPR was pretty much the last bastion against this exclusive content crap. To see them do this... Just a let down.

I would have been mad had they lied like crystal about tomb raider, but they were honest, so points for that.

Avatar image for BuyaPC

The most self entitled crybaby fan base in gaming history strikes again. Sony fans get way more exclusive extras than xbox. And then god forbid xbox gets a little something and ps fan loses their shit.

Avatar image for bbq_R0ADK1LL

If you're a collector of items like this, do you really even care what disc is in the box? You wouldn't want to take it out & risk scratching it, would you?

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> Of course I do. My choice of console (and PC) says just as much about me, more even, as the games I play. You are right, though, whenever I can find a good deal, I buy a separate copy for actual use.

Avatar image for grajy

Wow. People are upset about this?

In game content I can understand. A special limited edition having extra stuff for one platform and not others? Seriously?!
Man... there must be some butt-hurt fanboys out there.
Just to spite all of you upset fanboys, I might just purchase this edition, knowing that there are a few of you out there that won't have a packet of playing cards (that will NEVER be opened) and a cloth map.
Nah seriously, I was gonna buy this anyway. But knowing that there are some "gamers" out there, crying into their pillows at night over this will be that little bit tastier.
Since when did we care so much about "exclusive limited edition content"? You all know it as well as me. This isn't about how "bad" the dev/publisher is. It's all about how "Jimmy gets something that I don't, Mommy! Wah wah!"
If people seriously had an issue with game devs/publishers, they wouldn't be here whining about anything. They'd simply shrug their shoulders and move on.
But I digress. Do whatever you want. Moan if you want to moan. Play if you want to play.
"Upset gamers" are a blight to our hobby... Enjoy or shutup.

Avatar image for bdrtfm

As long as we all get the same game content, I don't care what trinkets are in the box. Can't believe people are getting upset about this. Especially Sony fans. Exclusive DLC for Destiny. Exclusive DLC for Shadows of Mordor. Exclusive content in any game they can get their hands on and Sony fans are complaining about this? I'd trade all the crap in this set for a complete X1 version of Destiny any day.

Avatar image for Unfallen_Satan

<< LINK REMOVED >> It sounds like you are a XB1 user. If so, you opinion to the outcry by PC and PS4 users is completely irrelevant. You should simply do your part and buy the Witcher 3 XB1 CE.

Avatar image for VersaType

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah it's sad people are mad about an extra map that's mae of cloth, and cards. As of now, Sony does have the most amount of "exclusive content" deals. And they have way more actual exclusive content for multi plat games than Microsoft does. Microsoft has more of timed exclusive dlc deals. It's annoying they when either one has exclusive content that no other platform gets. But if people really care about this issue, they would be mostly pissed at Sony.

Avatar image for Jasurim

It was the money in the end that probably convinced them and it *is* still a slight betrayal on their values. I think people are so upset because we thought we had one company that was above all that mess, but it turns out that even CDPR has their price which is a worrying thing.

In saying that though, they have at least kept the actual game content out of it. That is not something many can lay claim to now days, with exclusive content here and pre-order bonuses there...so at least they still have that.

Oh well, either way, I'm still getting mine on PC.

Avatar image for HipHopBeats

I'm pretty sure people will be selling the card decks and cloth map crap on Ebay anyway.

Avatar image for bidwells

Games cost a huge amount of money to make and I can understand CDProject taking this stance. I am sure that Microsoft pitched an exclusive DLC to them also and the cards are a compromise. Microsoft does this with a lot of companies (EA, Bethesda) and it usually is done with DLC's. So Kudos to CDProject for not doing what everyone else does. I will take non exclusive game DLC and content always. Let the consoles have their exclusive physical items in their collectors editions, just so long as there is no exclusive DLC. The Witcher series is one of my favorites and I play for the story not the collectors editions. Thumbs up to CDProject.

Avatar image for SilentAssassin

So if your system is losing the console war you getter better exclusives to help sales? I guess it makes sense but that sucks because I'm a SONY fan.

Avatar image for lomsha

Traitors! Be sad all you want lol.

Avatar image for dolchi21

this is what i see:

CDPR1: - "hey, these guy are giving us money to sell some cards that don't have any effect on the game at all"

CDPR2: - "wtf?"

CDPR1: - "exactly."

CDPR2: - "pizza for everyone! courtesy of MS"

Avatar image for digigamerx

I don't get the point of what the co-founder Marcin Iwiński is saying that the few extra added physical items to the XBONE CE is going to add to their sales? Haven't they already got a huge ever growing fan base of the Witcher series already? Especially when people were enthralled with the game demo and presentations of the recent E3, Gamescom and PAX. The Witcher 2 was already enjoyed by the XBOX 360 users and being the first Witcher game to be converted to console. I am a PC gamer myself and already pre ordered the CE for the PC version myself but don't really care about an extra cloth or a pack of cards, I already have the Witcher 2 CE with the deck of cards in that. Just as long as they still keep the same playing experience on all platforms is all that counts. He also says that more announcements of great things are soon to come. Does that mean free cloths and cards for everyone....Yay!!...lol.

Avatar image for digigamerx

To me as a PC gamer and getting the CE Witcher 3 on PC doesn't bother me that much at all. I already have the Witcher 2 CE with the playing cards in that. Just as long as they don't change the playing experience shared on all platforms is what counts, as after all it's only a game. What I don't understand is what co-founder Marcin Iwińsk

Avatar image for jecomans

Is an exclusive physical item representing something from the game less harmful than actual exclusive content from the game? Absolutely. It still shouldn't happen. But thanks for giving the MS fanboys something to nibble on anyway, CDPR.

Avatar image for TehUndeadHorror

I'm pretty sick of collector's editions tbh so this is more incentive for me to just buy the base game.

Avatar image for edant79

Yeah, but once I see Triss naked that cloth map would really come in handy.
