Witcher 3 Dev Not Planning to Discuss Cyberpunk 2077 Until 2017

Studio plans to keep the focus on The Witcher 3 for a few years.

CD Projekt Red, developer of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has said it isn't planning to talk about its next game, Cyberpunk 2077, until 2017 at the earliest.

Speaking to Reuters, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski said he expects Cyberpunk 2077 to be a bigger commercial success than The Witcher 3, and added that the company doesn't plan to offer more information on the game for a while yet.

"We hope and we are certain that Cyberpunk has even bigger commercial potential," he said. "It is too early to talk about it, though."

"This year, and the next one will be the years of the Witcher," he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kicinski said The Witcher 3 is going to change how the studio is perceived, presumably alluding to the high-quality open-world RPG experience it's been able to deliver on its first attempt at the genre.

"Sales of the third part will be many times higher than with our earlier games," he said.

"We broke into the mainstream. It is such a moment in our firm's history that after some years people will look differently at CD Projekt before and after this release."

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in October 2012, and believed to be developed by a separate team inside CD Projekt Red.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

The game will offer a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It will also have sandbox elements and some form of multiplayer, though CD Projekt Red stresses that Cyberpunk 2077 is a "true RPG," and definitely not a multiplayer shooter.

Although platforms for Cyberpunk 2077 have not yet been announced, the studio has said it will "probably" come to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. A release date has not yet been announced.

People should not forget that CDPR is still a tiny developer, compared to EA or UBI, that has to look for financing by doing things like announcing a cool game 2 years earlier than they should. We can't forget that up until around 2003 CD Projekt was little more than a Polish game distributor with some localization capabilities. When they first announced they are planning to open a world-class dev studio gamers in Poland didn't take them seriously.

They have come a long way and now they are the authors of a game that should be considered an all time top 5 RPG. However, they are still small, their development cycles are long and some of their puff pieces smell of desperation. But come on people, cut them some slack, They deserve all the credit they can get for the Witcher Series and even an attempt at making 2077. They choose complex worlds that are not really easy to commercialize and they seem to make them incredible(at least the Witcher is)

thank god ill have to wait until 2017 and not 2077 LOL

Just as well, it'll take me ages to finish The Witcher, let alone DA:I

Nintendo's new console will be out by then. If it's more powerful than the PS4/Xone, then Nintendo should pay to get it exclusive to the NX and the PC. That way the PS4/Xone won't hold the game back.

@poster012: hahahahaha no.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c2415ad0d4d0

@poster012: even if NX will be more powerful then PS4 (unlikely, its not Nintendo way, they used to make cheap, crap hardware and make actual profit from their looser fanboys, unlike Sony and MS that dont profit from hardware) not a single dev going to care, because PS4 already sold 23Millions, by then it will double if not triple, add to that X1 numbers and the NX has no chance except being a down port console.

Don't worry, folks. We'll have Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 between now and then.

Maybe even a new Elder Scrolls. Don't think the waiting will be too painful.

edit: also a new Deus Ex for that cyberpunk fix.

@spikepigeo: Just give me Fallout 4 and why not a F1/F2 iPad editions, X-Com was best on iPad.

Whats the big thing with witcher 3.

The combat is just ridiculous

Avatar image for gamefreak215jd

@relgn: Guess you're one of those who skipped the previous games.

Avatar image for SolsticeXI

@relgn: Too much salt perhaps? Combat alone doesn't justifies a games success.

@relgn: dude...w0t?

This is probably a good thing. I applaud CDPR for not rushing their games and providing timely, long-term support. The waiting though, and the knowing....the dangling carrot...It's not going to be easy. Well, back to the Northern Kingdoms.

Avatar image for V3rciS

I'm actually happy they're not rushing it. This gives the devs the time they need to deliver a quality and complete product unlike some others that just rush unfinished games in order to make a quick buck and then every month charge for a new DLC.

mind blown

this game will be comeing out in 2017/2018 a i think they are just avoiding the downgade thing this way they can show the game when its close to release and no one can be upset with changes that are made as we wont see them.

there is also the fact they will be releaseing expansions for the witcher 3 and the extra time spent working the wither 3

the reason the annouced the game so ealry was for investors and hiring fo cp 2077

Avatar image for CapnXtraObvious

Yeah, no need, we have Deus Ex. Fk off with that Cyberpunk 2077 sh!t.

Avatar image for abehpfan

@CapnXtraObvious: Smart people will enjoy both. :D

Avatar image for CapnXtraObvious

@abehpfan@CapnXtraObvious: But I can't enjoy non-smart games :/

Avatar image for abehpfan

@CapnXtraObvious@abehpfan@CapnXtraObvious: Okay, have fun with the smartphone games then. :D

That early announcement was a little bit unfortunate, but I hope for another great game from CDPR. Judging by their comment, we won't have it anytime soon than 2018 (omg, that's almost 3 years from now).
Funny fact. The first Witcher was released in 2007, the second in 2011 and now the third in 2015. So judging by that logic, Cyberpunk will be released in 2019.

Avatar image for ewjiml

Apparently it takes 3 years to make awesome games.

Avatar image for ewjiml

I hope this company stays true to their roots and doesn't become some stock invested company that pushes annual games out the door. Wish them success. ....."in other news, CD Projekt Red is bought by Blizzard..."

Avatar image for gamedelay

@ewjiml: Ha! For a brief second, your last sentence caused fierce feelings of hatred toward you, person I've never met. Which is strange, because I don't have anything against Blizzard.

But...no. Please, no.

Avatar image for nbf4548

Wow, that's surprising, because if they're only going to start talking about it in 2017, then it's a 2018 or 2019 release. 4 years!

Avatar image for SilentAssassin

So.. why are you?

Avatar image for normanislost

@SilentAssassin: because someone probably asked them about it and this is the answer they gave

Avatar image for mattymjp

'Witcher 3 Dev can now AFFORD not to discuss Cyberpunk 2077 until 2017'.

Avatar image for MohammadSubhan1

2077 should be released at its appropriate time i.e 2077.

Avatar image for spikepigeo

@MohammadSubhan1: By then we'll actually be augmented ourselves living out a similar fantasy, I'd wager.

And all the chick-bots will be mega-hawt, wearing nothing but a tank top and panties in the street... with scythes for arms.

One can only hope.

Avatar image for MohammadSubhan1

Lol, but in 2077 we should be very old so that doesn't matter

Avatar image for gamedelay

@MohammadSubhan1: There will be technology to help with that. All of that. Including the scythe-arms, I'm hoping.

Avatar image for MohammadSubhan1

Good point. So I'll be waiting for a company which will build mega hot chick bots. That's all left to do in 2077.

Avatar image for justbefahad

They announced it waaaay too early.

Avatar image for verysalt

Probably they tried to build hype and fame for their company. Witcher 3 clearly put CDProjekt on top. Somehow it reminds me the early years of Blizzard when quality was most important.

Avatar image for diabolicalfudge

At least they let people know it wasn't scrapped. A good number or people thought this game was in limbo it seems

Avatar image for verysalt

Witcher 3 took to develop how long, about 4 years ? Probably it will take no less for 2077 too.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

As it should be. Give us a taste and then let our imaginations do the rest until you are ready to show something concrete.

Avatar image for kingcrimson24

then why did you reveal it so soon ??

Avatar image for Paoksis

@kingcrimson24: because their company will go up in the stock market knowing that they are already planning a big hit after the Witcher....
