Witcher 3 Blood and Wine Expansion "More Refined" than Full Game

"Blood and Wine is the sum of all the experiences we gained when creating Wild Hunt," CD Projekt Red says.

Recently, a CD Projekt Red developer said The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's upcoming Blood and Wine expansion was, in some ways, "better than the main game." Now, the Polish studio has provided some additional context and clarification around that comment. CD Projekt Red marketing lead Michal Platkow-Gilewski tells GameSpot that Blood and Wine is not necessarily "better" than the main game, but it should feel "more refined."

"Blood and Wine is the sum of all the experiences we gained when creating Wild Hunt, so it's definitely more refined than Wild Hunt in many regards, but that doesn't mean it's better per se," he said.

Platkow-Gilewski went on to say players can look forward to all manner of new monsters, quests, and places of interest in Blood and Wine. He also notes that Blood and Wine's new realm, Toussaint, rivals the size of those found in the base game. But he wouldn't get drawn into a debate about what's "better."

"I wouldn't point fingers at what's better separately, as each addition to Wild Hunt (including over 10 updates we've released so far) enriches the overall experience you get from The Witcher as a game in general," he said. "The base game with the expansions is simply better than without them."

CD Projekt Red previously said The Witcher 3's two expansions, combined, amount to "almost the size of The Witcher 2." Blood and Wine is expected to offer around 20 hours of gameplay, which is double what October's Hearts of Stone had for players.

The expansion was first slated to arrive in Q1 2016 (January-March), but has now shifted to the first half of 2016 (January-June). A specific release date has not been announced.

Blood and Wine's first images (above) were released in December, showcasing the colorful all-new region of Toussaint. CD Projekt Red isn't yet talking specifics, saying only that the expansion will "take Geralt to a land untainted by war, where an atmosphere of carefree indulgence and knightly ritual masks an ancient, bloody secret." It will also include new gear and enemies, as well as characters who are "both new and dearly missed."

The Witcher 3 took home its first major Game of the Year award in December at The Game Awards. The RPG has also been nominated for that honor at the upcoming Game Developers Choice and D.I.C.E. awards. In addition, it's up for a Writers Guild of America award.

The latest major update for The Witcher 3 was released this past week, fixing a number of bugs and improving the "general game performance." As of August 2015, The Witcher 3 had sold 6 million copies.

This is literally all I care about out "players can look forward to all manner of new monsters"

Every other aspect of this game is boring and stupid.

They should make a game solely focused on the monster hunting, and put it in a more modern-ish setting, not this medieval crap.

@skyhighgam3r: Everything you wrote there is fawking garbage. I hope that people like you stay away from this game/dev. You sound like an awkward mixture of troll plus dick. They don't need your input/money. Go play Monster Hunter then, you asshole.

@omotih: Why did you say "darker then episode 7"? Why didn't you use 'than'? Please tell me. I'm curious because I see it happening a lot these days buy many different people.

@ Witcher 3 is one of them games that only comes out once in a decade or so and leaves a lasting impression not only on you, but the surrounding world you. It most certainluy was my best game for 2015 and prolly is (so far) my number 1 pic for this decade as well which is saying quite a lot. iF Blood and wINE is even a quarter of the the product that Prokect Redd describes in the interview above, we are in for quite a treat!! Cannot wait!!

Even after beating the main game and the HoS expansion, taking more than 125 hours, I am still greatly anticipating jumping right back in and playing even more content. This game is so good!

As long as the loading screens are more like Skellige than Novigrad I'll be okay.

@Dannystaples14: Toussaint is a duchy with mediterranean climate located close to mountains. It won't be like Skellige at all. And that's good, I have enough sailing.

@Vojtass: I meant in terms of size. Novigrad/Velen's map is too big. The loading screen takes too long. Dying in Novigrad/Velen is a pain in the backside because you then have to sit through a good 60 seconds of loading screen.

But Skellige's map is just right. It is big and interesting but doesn't make you bored waiting for it to load.

@Etagloc: Yeah with SSDs still being about $5 a GB. Not even slightly worth it just to shave off 10 seconds.

@Dannystaples14: You sound like you have no idea whatsoever about hardware and their associated benefits. Top end SSD's were $3/GB 5+ years ago when I bought a 160GB Intel SSD for ~$500. I very much feel it was worthwhile, even back then at $3/GB. Nowadays you can get an NVME M.2 SSD which is top of the line consumer SSD tech for ~$1.00/GB - $1.50/GB. You can get Sata SSD's for ~$0.50/GB - ~1.00/GB. All prices CAD. USD would be even cheaper.

Going from an HDD to an SSD is as big a jump as going from integrated graphics to some top end discrete GPU. As for shaving off x amount of seconds, try more like cutting down most loads by ~70%- 90%+.

@69: 70% to 90% MY ASS!

I've looked at comparisons online loads of times and at the very most SSDs reduce load times by about 10 seconds for large tasks such as turning on the system or loading games. They reduce load times by about 10 - 20% in most cases. This can be seen clearly in many youtube videos.

Yet most of the stuff I do on a day to day DOESN'T take 60 seconds. My laptop right now with a regular HD only takes about 3 seconds to load programs. An SSD for most computers that aren't shit the increase is basically negligible for most tasks.

I don't even wait for my PC to load anyway. I switch it on when I wake up then go make breakfast. It could take 25 minutes to load and it wouldn't make any difference. And you are trying to prove 30 seconds is somehow ground breaking? WOW!

@Dannystaples14: I think it is worth it, atleast for bigger games like the witcher AND your operating system.

I have a single 128 gb ssd for OP system and a big game.

I just install other random games on my normal HD.

if you can shave 10-30 sec of a load screen EVERY time you load.- Be it deaths - load screen or simply starting up the game.. you overall experience will improve. 100X20 is alot. of time.

@Dannystaples14: A quick search of various sites in various major markets (US, Germany, UK, Japan, Sweden) are all showing competitive SSD pricing well under a $1/GB after conversion. Maybe if you live somewhere like Brazil, with crazy import taxes, it might be that high, or higher. Obviously, I don't know where you live, but to say that it's that high anywhere not the US is just factually incorrect.

Frankly 30 seconds on PC is still way too long. What is that extra power being used on exactly?

@Dannystaples14: I'm honestly not trying to brag or anything. I was simply curious, so I fast traveled all over the place and on average it took 4-5 seconds. Granted I don't have my settings on ultra or anything...med/high, a couple things on low.

Also, you should easily be able to find an SSD for around $0.30-$0.40/gb.

Frankly anything below 500GB for a hard drive these days is simply pathetic.

@Dannystaples14: Not sure how you got to $30.....and I'm not really trying to start an argument with you. This is simply my advice. If you get on Newegg or TigerDirect you should be able to find an SSD for $0.30 - $0.50/GB. If you're looking for 2TB it's going to be $600-$700. You will notice a major difference in load times, PC boot times, and file reading/writing/transfers. Hope that helps.

@velcroboy: I'm not paying $600 for a fucking hard drive! Looking on PC Parts Picker you can get a 2TB HD for $60. Why would I pay more than an entire games console just for the sake of a few seconds to boot?

Most of the time I boot up my computer when I wake up and leave it on all day. My computer doesn't get booted very often and when I'm using it it tends to be one program I'm using for extended times.

$600-700.........you must be f*cking brain damaged.

Not so big a problem I need to delude myself into wasting money that is for damn sure.

But hey enjoy your 30 second load screens that in no way reflects the amount of money you spent on the SSD.
