#rigged #rigged oh wait some games I like won, still #rigged. In all legitimacy this is just silly valve (or related companies) won half the awards I mean isn't this a few years too late for portal 2 to get an award. Granted love half of these games but why not have "most anticipated game we can neither confirm nor deny" half life 3

That the "Just Five More Minutes" is not a CIV or XCOM or any great turn based game but Counter Strike makes me want to vomit in my mouth.

I love the name for Doom's award, definetly fits the name and no other comes close to mind with that.

The Steam awards are a joke and the old style seasonal sales were way better.

Steam just stopped TRYING... years ago. But THIS year won the "Laziest Year Yet" award. No effort put in anything, everything is so cheap.

Skyrim winning 'test of time' is a joke.

@repulsive44552: Civilization series should have taken it

Avatar image for Mogan

@repulsive44552: Why? It's still got a ton of people playing it on Steam.

Avatar image for ganondorf77

@Mogan: Being popular has nothing to do with a 'test of time' award. It shouldn't at all, it usually refers to still feeling up to date just by a glimpse, like Commandos 2 Men of Courage. Kinda ironic that is not a moddable game and is 15+ year old. Skyrim does not pass at all a 'test of time' test, and the best proof of that is that it needed a remaster 5 years later. Ridiculous. Skyrim is a great game, that's all, and not that great if you don't mod it.

@ganondorf77: So people should have voted based on facts? "This is the oldest game still sold and getting some updates - tick". C'mon if there is a fact why should it be acknowledged with a poll? It's like having a category "The oldest good game" and then insisting Pong should win because it's the oldest good game I can think of.

Besides these days when a dozen games are released every week and games cost as much as potatoes, 6 years is almost ancient.

Avatar image for Mogan

@ganondorf77: If you read the Test of Time award description it specifically states that it's for a game 'you'll always come back and play.' Skyrim has more people playing it now than a lot of much newer AAA games do (not even counting the remaster), and it's modding community is still really strong. Skyrim fits the bill.

Just to make this clear, you could nominate a game ONLY if it is in your library, I think this steam awards = failure.

Avatar image for Junior_AIN

@asmoddeuss: This is an outright lie.

Avatar image for asmoddeuss
asmoddeuss

@Junior_AIN: Nope, before the voting started, we could nominate games for specific awards, in my case I was only allowed to nominate a game if I have in my library. Now the voting part was different, you could vote what ever you wanted.

Avatar image for Junior_AIN
Junior_AIN

@asmoddeuss: As others have also stated already, what you're saying is a lie, it doesn't have any connection with reality.
I precisely remember nominating Goat Simulator for best use of a farm animal because the award was basically made for it and I've never owned Goat Simulator.

Avatar image for asmoddeuss

@Junior_AIN: You nominated it or vote it? tomato tomato potato potato. And why the **** would I lie? I think you are mixing both words.

Avatar image for Junior_AIN

@asmoddeuss: Read this thread on the Steam discussion section and a lot of people are flat-out stating they nominated Goat Simulator despite not having it.

@asmoddeuss: I NOMINATED it (and afterwards I voted for it also). You could nominate ANY game on Steam, whether you had it on your library or not.

Avatar image for asmoddeuss
asmoddeuss

@Junior_AIN: Then the day I got the option to nominate games, it was bugged or so? I recall I could not nominate games that I didn't own and I was so frustrated about it because it didn't make much sense, well...what ever, the event is gone/done.

Avatar image for Ripper_TV

@asmoddeuss: What? You could nominate anything.

Avatar image for ganondorf77
ganondorf77

@asmoddeuss: Better, and of course a little utopic, you should be able to vote only if you have all of the games nominated in your library. Only the most popular or most bought is the winner in almost any case for this kind of awards.

Basically the most popular game won.

Age of Empires 2 was originally released in 1999 and people are still playing it today. If that doesn't stand the test of time then I don't know what does.

@RicanV: Exactly. How many other games do you know that are still getting official expansions 18 years after release? This game definitely should have won the award.

Avatar image for SpookyRonin

@RicanV: Same with Heroes of Might and Magic 3, but I guess it's not available on Steam so it wasn't nominated.

Avatar image for docholliday13

@spaced92: Clearly, most people just took this as a popularity contest and voted for whatever game they liked best in each group. Because why bother actually trying to figure out which game fits the description best, right?

Avatar image for heqteur
Heqteur

@spaced92: Must be why the remaster sold millions of copies on both PS4 and X1. Hate the game all you want, everyone has their right to their own tastes, but you GOTTA give credits where it's due. A vast majority of people voted for Skyrim BECAUSE those who enjoys the game did for so long. Insane amount of stuff to do right from the vanilla game, DLC with a fair price and good amount additional content, infinite mods possibilities... What's generic or boring about Mods? Or maybe you just think it's cool to hate on Skyrim?

Avatar image for docholliday13
DocHolliday13

@heqteur: No, you don't get it. It's not that Skyrim isn't a good game, it's that it's a relatively recent game. It hasn't been out long enough for "test of time" to apply to it. Age of Empires II, for example, was released in 1999, is still relatively popular, and is still getting new expansions on Steam. I mean, freaking Morrowind is more recent than AOE2, and it's so old you've probably never played it. (In case you don't know what Morrowind is, it's the Elder Scrolls game that came out before Oblivion, ie. 2 releases older than Skyrim.)

@spaced92: I agree Goat simulator and Euro truck simulator are the greatest.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum

@tom_cat_01: Yeah this means that next year the awards have to be different, not just the winners (if there will be another "gala")

"In 2016 we rewarded the Betterest game with friends, next year we will reward the Worst flying gameplay and the Best sewer level"

If they do that I think they might be onto something here (I'm curious to know what is the best sewer level in games). There are already half a million simple "Best games of this year" awards and as a result each year we have those some games advertised with "Winner of 48 GOTY awards!" which is just nonsense IMO. Like winning 8 Oscars or 12 gold medals but still being just one of the many "good" games

@jkittleson: To be fair, those games were all better than most 2016 titles. Additionally, go back to the awards' rules and see how it never states anything about it being a "2016 games only" thing.
