Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows 10, will launch this summer across 190 countries and in 111 languages, executive Terry Myerson announced in a blog post. The company isn't yet committing to a specific release date, however.

For the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch, PCs running Windows 7 and 8 will be eligible for a free upgrade to the new OS.

Microsoft has also announced a new partnership with Chinese Internet giant Tencent. As part of the deal, Tencent will bring some of its most popular PC games, including League of Legends and Cross Fire, to Windows 10 and the new Windows store.

Windows 10 features a new Xbox gaming app, which will not require Xbox Live Gold. Meanwhile, another marquee gaming feature for Windows 10 is that it will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. In addition, Windows 10 supports cross-platform play, starting with Fable Legends.

Predecessor Windows 8, released in October 2012, was controversial in that it introduced a touch-focused tile design that was markedly different to Windows 7. Microsoft addressed these criticisms with frequent--and substantial updates--including Windows 8.1.

The company isn't starting over with Windows 10, but Microsoft appears to be taking a more traditional approach with the new OS.

"We believe that, together with the feedback you provide us, we can build a product that all of our customers will love," Myerson said last year. "It will be our most open collaborate OS projects ever."

Finally biometrics are making much more sense: Unique human biological signature, combined with very strong hardware and a truly smart engine, plus personal identifications stored on our own personal devices instead of on servers, can really change the game. This is my favorite part: If there’s no personal identification data stored on servers, how would hackers hack into our personal life? They’d have to literally steal your laptop or smartphone. Hahaha.. Bravo Microsoft! I believe this is going to establish the painless computing security. And yes, we are getting closer to sci-fi movies. Finally I find Windows Password Key (<< LINK REMOVED >>) is a nice tool to unlock Windows 10 password.

Wouldn't LOL have worked anyway even without the partnership? Or is Win 10 not backwards compatible?

Meh, good thing it's a free upgrade, 'cause I see no problems with 8

Do you REALLY still use the start center?
You don't even HAVE to use the Metro UI if you don't want to... I don't ever use it.

If it wasn't free, I certainly wouldn't bother.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I use the Start menu. I don't think I'll ever stop using it. That's why I hate my Win8 laptop. Every time I use it, it's so frustrating. So it just collects dust.

While I could not imagine MS bringing out another Vista, win8, or ME and believe that Win10 will be a homerun out of the park like 98 2nd ed, XP, and Win 7 -

I have always found this moto to work well for me, "Let the pawns go first".

<< LINK REMOVED >> Win ME was not that bad. I didnt't see anything wrong with it. The worst thing you can say is that it's just another 98. Vista and 8 I agree with though, especially 8.

Windows 8 is and always has been a better OS in nearly every way than Windows 7. Windows 7 was only a marginal improvement over the last build of Vista, with the two having much more in common than they had differences. Some people just fear change and won't upgrade until they can justify that their current OS is too outdated which leads to the "every other OS" myth.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I always felt that people were ridiculous for still using the start center...

Nor did you ever have to use the Metro UI for anything...

People just don't know how to use their computers, it's sad.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Then I guess you two know more then journalists, business users, power users, and the 600million customers that MS expected would migrate to windows 8 but instead opted for alternatives. Just check reviews of windows 8 before 8.1 or especially at launch, as a beta user- we were stunned that MS took none of the advice and early warnings and still rolled out with what will go down as the worst OS, save ME, that MS has ever released.

I am sure that early 8 was perfect for those who spend more time on social sites checking on Justin Bieber, then actually trying to get some work done. An OS is not just what runs a browser but what real workers use to get work done, with programs from adobe (indesign, illustrator), video editing, and design having problems, regedit access, programs that work close to the hardware and even games having trouble with 8 - why bother switching over.

Windows 8 was not about the metro tiles - it was about not having access to the system to quickly get work done that real users need. Do not believe me, just check any review of the OS during beta, release, and launch. IF 8 was any good why has the adoption been so pitiful. OR why "how to go from 8 to 7", is a half million search term.

I do applaud all that MS done to fix the OS with 8.1 - a 180 degree change by far- but again why would anyone bother upgrading from XP, 7 when there is absolutely no benefit, not to mention every program, game, and use is designed around windows 7 first and foremost, the largest OS in use. $100 dollar purchase just to see facebook, twiitter, and whatever virtual titty you children need to see in constant view to feel as special as your mommies have told you, you must be.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> 8.1 is not a 180d change. It doesn't change much at all really. It adds the start button, but it's not the same start button functionality as W7. All it does is bring up the metro interface.

I have been using windows 10 Technical preview since they launch it Now on build 9926. It is very stable no problems no crashes possibly the best OS Microsoft have made. Its like taking all win 7 & win 8 good bits to make one OS. DirectX 12 will be launch with win 10 and only win 10. You can use a clean install or dual boot with your old OS or install over your old OS with the option to restore the old OS. I strongly recommend tying Windows 10 cos its the way forward for Microsoft and all other OS will become redundant gone just like poor old XP.

Same here. Except a couple of my apps don't work. 1. Norton Internet Security won't install. 2. My printer doesn't work with MS Word (but it works with Notepad.) I dual boot into Windows 8.1 to print stuff - which is not too often. Other than that Build 9926 is pretty good.

Can't wait. Hopefully people will get with the times and upgrade their systems. Every time someone walks into my shop with a laptop or PC with the Windows Vista logo on it, I groan inside. Hate working on anything with that POS installed on it.

Offer to upgrade them to windows 10 when it is released for a small service fee. Then you'll be liable for things that might not work after that because you touched it last.

I'll wait until I see that its stable and I see how some of the features work. I've really grown to like 8.1. Its fast, its small and its really convenient. It makes W7 look like garbage. At least to me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> another important factor that needs to be considered is the compatibility of programs. windows 7 runs everything in existence pretty much. i hope to see full compatibility with win 10 soon after launch.

hard to believe it has almost been 3 years since 8 released. i never had the craving to make the switch from 7 and have no interest in 10 either. if the reviews are stellar and they manage to patch all the bugs, i'll make the switch.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't care about DX12.

They forced Vista for DX10, and I just stuck to DX9 on XP. I compared screenshots of DX9 Crysis with DX10 and didn't consider it big enough to upgrade.

I don't have a DX12 card, so it makes no difference. If they make DX12 Win10 exclusive, I'll still to DX11. The PS4 has no DX at all, and I don't mind how its games look, so I think I'll be fine with DX11. Same with Xbox 1.

<< LINK REMOVED >> that is true... thing is i game on a laptop that doesn't exactly have the most powerful specs so i won't be looking for cutting edge graphics. i mainly play indie games and less demanding titles on my pc. if all the indies suddenly make dx12 mandatory then i'll have to make the switch to win 10 i guess. all my AAA experiences will be on ps4.

Avatar image for btbrotherton

Why wouldn't you have upgraded to 8? It's better in every way besides an alternate UI that you can totally ignore. Oh no! The start menu is an entire screen instead of a tiny menu!

Avatar image for lostn

<< LINK REMOVED >> The mouse gestures in Win8 make no sense intuitively. It was clearly designed for a touch screen interface.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a803cda1fb41

<< LINK REMOVED >> Windows 7 is among the best ever made, alongside 98, 95 and XP. Windows 8 was originally marketed to be closed off like IOS. We need to cement the fact that people don't like it being like that for them to learn a harsh lesson.

Remember the original Xbox One policies? well Windows 8 was the Xbox One of consoles in terms of unpopular changes.

Is this free upgrade will be similar to 8.1 upgrade from windows update platform or we will have to install clean copy of 10 ?

I wonder if the Windows 7 copy will still work. I'd much rather have 10 and 7 in dual boot rather than commit to an OS I'm not sure of.
