Windows 10 Release Date Announced

Latest version of Microsoft's operating system coming in July

Microsoft has confirmed Windows 10 will be available for PCs and tablets worldwide from July 29.

The confirmation was provided on the Windows Blog, where Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of its operating systems group, said the release was the start of Microsoft's efforts in delivering a "more personal computing, defined by trust in how we protect and respect your personal information, mobility of the experience across your devices, and natural interactions with your Windows devices."

As revealed in March, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch.

Although Microsoft initially indicated those running pirated versions of Windows would also be able to upgrade to genuine Windows 10 for free, it has since said this is not the case.

"While our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to non-genuine Windows devices, as we've always done, we will continue to offer Windows 10 to customers running devices in a non-genuine state." Myerson said.

"Non-genuine Windows has a high risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions," he added. "Non-genuine Windows is not supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner."

Microsoft is, however, working with partners to make upgrading to a legitimate version more appealing.

"In partnership with some of our valued OEM partners, we are planning very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers for their customers running one of their older devices in a non-genuine state," he said. "Please stay tuned to learn more from our partners on the specifics of their offers."

Microsoft is working with Chinese Internet giant Tencent to bring League of Legends to Windows 10, while Candy Crush Saga will come pre-installed on the latest version of its operating system.

Windows 10 also features a new Xbox gaming app, which won't require Xbox Live Gold. Additionally, Windows 10 will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. Cross-platform play will also be supported, starting with Fable Legends.

Microsoft has said its ambition is for Windows 10 to reach 1 billion devices by 2018. Windows 10 is expectedfor Xbox One later this year.

I'm gonna wait till both windows 10 and Minecraft are stable and actually worth the investment. So far Mincraft windows 10 edition just sounds like the console version; which is a lesser version of the original PC version.

My desktop PC runs Windows 10 preview (from W7) and my new XPS laptop runs Windows 8. There is absolutely nothing that makes me want to drop Windows 8 for 10. It's uglier, slower and the new features like Cortana I couldn't care for.

There's nothing I want from a windows operating system, that Windows 7 can't do.

For DX12, I'd rather wait and see if it's really THAT worth upgrading to Windows 10.

Maybe there will be some kind of incentive to actually buy a Windows Phone with this OS. I've always been curious about getting a Windows Phone, because I like the layout & functionality of it, but there's just not enough support. Not to mention, I only use high-end phones and Windows Phones aren't very powerful. I think just last year they finally moved past using 1GB of RAM, where as Android is using up to 4GB's in their top-end models (and even some mid-range phones like the Asus ZenFone 2).

It's pretty bad that Microsoft makes more money off Android phone sales, because of patent royalties, than they do selling their own phones right now. They should drop Windows Phone completely and make Android phones. They could even keep the same look of the OS. Have Nokia build a beastly Android phone with a Windows skin over it. That way they can have all the developer support of Android and Google, and still make it a Windows Phone. It's win/win.

Dang... I should be running their phone business (before they drive it too far into the ground). People would buy a Microsoft Android phone just to get the best of both worlds, but they obviously won't leave Android behind for just a Microsoft phone. I think a phone like that would put a serious dent in both Samsung AND Apple sales. But its gotta be affordable like the Google Nexus phones USED to be... $300-$350 OFF CONTRACT!

I just did a rebuild about a month ago & bought a copy of 8.1. I'm glad 10 is coming soon, 8.1 is such a weird OS. Whenever I plug in a USB I get a popup saying "Tap here...". Seriously? Tap?

I just noticed that I have a "get windows 10" icon on my pc's tray. until it can be guaranteed that it is fully compatible with all the games I can play on my windows 7 system, I'm not messing with it.

@C-THREE: I'm not worried about older games. REALLY old (16-bit) games will break if you go from 32 to 64-bit but the OS changes shouldn't be an issue. I'm guessing you're not playing games via Internet Explorer, either.

Bugs could be a thing, though, so it might not be bad to give it a month or three.

@C-THREE: Me 3. I am going to read amateur and pro reviews about Windows 10's compatibility with older games, older office suite programs, & older software in general. If all is good, then I'll upgrade to Windows 10.

I still play Mass Effect 1 and a few older games.

W10 should be for free regardless if you had W7 or W8. MS can make the money using the Windows Store, just like Apple did with MACOSX (free now) and their Apple Store.

@Cryio: Not many people use a Mac. People either use Macs because they're hipsters or they use it because they have an actual business-related interest in it, like image/video editing. There's simply not a whole lot of money to be made in making applications for OSX. OSX has something like 6-7% marketshare. It's a miserable landscape to be in unless you do industry software for the needs of people who use Macs on a business-level... and if you're on that level, you're probably dealing with contracts, specialized distribution and product support, not doing everything through a stupid marketplace app.

@chillock117: I've had my hands on an RC copy of W10 for a while now and it's quite impressive. The improvements over W7 and subsequently W8.1 are substantial, though easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. It is quite ab it faster than W7, though not much faster than W8 or 8.1. The revamped start menu is a welcomed retreat to the old, tride and true format we all know and enjoy.

So say for example Halo 5 is capped at 900p 30 fps (not that it will be) on Xbox One, Will I be able to play it at 1440p 144 fps on my PC? Will the graphical limitations of the Xbox One be applied to my PC during crossplay?

"We will definitely offer this as an upgrade for people not running genuine copies of Windows."

"We definitely won't be doing that thing we said earlier."

That's kind of typical Microsoft, but I'm still looking forward to Windows 10. You can't deny they make good operating systems.

I'm just wondering what's going to happen to people running non-genuine versions of Windows that upgrade to non-genuine Windows 10...

Are they just going to get locked out until they upgrade?

Non-genuine copies of Windows 7 here in China are pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing, updates and all.

I *seriously* doubt you'll be able to download *any* updates for your officially unofficial Windows 10, in which case you're *far* better off staying the hell away from that download.

@naryanrobinson: It probably won't matter much. This is the 'last' Windows so it's going to be more of a service platform. I think they're less concerned about you paying the up front cost & more focused on hooking you into monthly or annual payments for cloud storage, Office & other software.

@naryanrobinson: They stated non genuine will be able to upgrade, but like windows 7 will have the watermark "This is a non Genuine copy of Windows". Basically Non Genuine Windows 7 becomes Non genuine Windows 10.

The limitations on most non-genuine Windows 7s are basically none.

@naryanrobinson@Stedmister: Apparently windows 8 is tricky to crack from what I heard, I assume the same process will be applied to Windows 10, hey I say if it's under $100 bucks, most will jump at the chance to go legit.

Hey guys, like everyone else in the world, you are probably wondering about the damn "Get Windows 10" icon in the system tray.

It's a windows update app, called GWX.

There is a way to remove it - you need to uninstall the windows update: KB3035583.

After this you need to search updates again - and hide it.

Problem is, that you won't get a notification when you can DL win 10....

Not sure why MS gone the path of forcing a process to run at the background and tray like this.

What is the point in doing this???? its a little icon at the bottom right hand corner. Once you opt in you still get to decide when it is installed even if it downloads automatically it will not install until you decide to.... really no point in hiding it whatsoever essentially you could opt in download it automatically and never install it

You miss the point. I am all for upgrading to win10. I Would love to install it.

What I don't is a process (GWX) forced to run in the background, likely to constantly check online for updates, and a system tray icon you can't remove.

I applaud MS for giving this update for free. But why force this app on users? What are they, Google?! (Google are the worse in background junk).
