Windows 10 Release Date Announced

Latest version of Microsoft's operating system coming in July

Microsoft has confirmed Windows 10 will be available for PCs and tablets worldwide from July 29.

The confirmation was provided on the Windows Blog, where Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president of its operating systems group, said the release was the start of Microsoft's efforts in delivering a "more personal computing, defined by trust in how we protect and respect your personal information, mobility of the experience across your devices, and natural interactions with your Windows devices."

As revealed in March, Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for the first twelve months following Windows 10's launch.

Although Microsoft initially indicated those running pirated versions of Windows would also be able to upgrade to genuine Windows 10 for free, it has since said this is not the case.

"While our free offer to upgrade to Windows 10 will not apply to non-genuine Windows devices, as we've always done, we will continue to offer Windows 10 to customers running devices in a non-genuine state." Myerson said.

"Non-genuine Windows has a high risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information, and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions," he added. "Non-genuine Windows is not supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner."

Microsoft is, however, working with partners to make upgrading to a legitimate version more appealing.

"In partnership with some of our valued OEM partners, we are planning very attractive Windows 10 upgrade offers for their customers running one of their older devices in a non-genuine state," he said. "Please stay tuned to learn more from our partners on the specifics of their offers."

Microsoft is working with Chinese Internet giant Tencent to bring League of Legends to Windows 10, while Candy Crush Saga will come pre-installed on the latest version of its operating system.

Windows 10 also features a new Xbox gaming app, which won't require Xbox Live Gold. Additionally, Windows 10 will allow Xbox One games to stream to PCs and tablets running the new OS. Cross-platform play will also be supported, starting with Fable Legends.

Microsoft has said its ambition is for Windows 10 to reach 1 billion devices by 2018. Windows 10 is expectedfor Xbox One later this year.

Lol, sounds to me like they are going to offer cheaper upgrades to pirates who own prebuilt systems like Dell's or Acer's etc. The problem with that is, most pirates from my experience in servicing systems are people with custom built systems. So, this won't be of much use to them. Unless they are also talking OEM partners like going through Asus if you own an Asus mobo and things like that. But, that's highly doubtful. Sounds like prebuilt OEM systems only.

Too bad. I hate working on systems that have pirated copies of Windows. It becomes quite a conundrum when you have to tell the client you need to replace their HDD or reinstall Windows for another reason. Kind of hard to do when they don't have a legal copy.

What about the ones who use their bought windows copies but those copies are restricted to a certain retailer?

For instance you buy a PC have the disk that came with it but it is only legitimate on that PC.

@lrdfancypants: The windows License printed on the bottom of laptop or back of box wherever it is will still be a genuine windows product key you can technically use any windows 7 or 8 disc and install from that disc then use your license key to authenticate/activate and its golden

Did this with the wife's toshiba laptop less than 3 months old because i hate all the bloatware provided by OEM's runs much smoother nothaving toshiba junk running in the background non stop (even using msconfig to disable services and startup apps it was still slower)

I'm all for a free Win10. I NEVER upgrade OS's though. I hope Microsoft allows a fresh install of this because I hate the alternative.

@wookiepower4k: The upgrades work nicely these days. I've does 7->8->8.1 and it all worked cleanly. XP and earlier I always did a clean install. There's just much installed on my systems these days I'd rather not have to re-install all of it.

It sounds like while they won't give a free Windows 10 upgrade to pirated users, you can get a discount on Windows 10 with a pirated Windows 7/8 rather than buying Windows 10 from scratch. That encourages me to pirate Windows 7/8 unintentionally just for the W10 discount.

Or maybe I can just VPN my IP address to a Chinese IP, and get full Windows 10 for free, since MS gave up on charging China for Windows 10.

@Elranzer: Or maybe you can just pay up. Seriously if you have a legitmate Win7/8/8.1 you get Win10 for free.

That's awesome. I really applaud MS for that move. Pirates can complain all day, they are despicable.

@GunEye@Elranzer: My old PCs will have Windows 7/8 but new PC builds won't. If the Chinese or pirates are being "rewarded" with discounts then you can bet power users will be able to figure out a way to get those discounts.

This of course only applies to home users, gamer PC enthusiasts, etc. Enterprise will always be locked down, and that's where Microsoft's bread-and-butter really lies.

BTW, that "Get Windows 10" thing on your taskbar is malware.

@Elranzer@GunEye: How do you know it's malware?

And why does it appear in every pc? (I own two).

Is there a way to remove it?

@Elranzer@GunEye: What did you do about it? And I run both Malwarebytes (free version) and Defender on two pcs, and it came up with nothing. So how can I detect the malware. Tried google it and no one talks about it. I already clicked on it, but pressed X to close it)

@GunEye@Elranzer: If it's running from the systray (the small icon area near the clock) then it's the real one. If it's just running on the taskbar, but no small icon near the clock, it's not the real one.

@Elranzer@GunEye: It's on the lower right coner, near the clock, however once you click on it, it appears on the taskbar as well (bigger inverted icon). Can I PM you an image?

@Elranzer@GunEye: can you please tell me if this is the safe one or not:

As you can see there is a "window" image on the tray, near the clock and lang bar. However once you click and it opens, it also opens a bigger icon (inverted) on the taskbar.

I have this Get Windows 10 in my taskbar.

I heard some people claim it might be malware/spyware.

Should activate the "reserve your free copy". Is this thing legit?

@busterfriendly@GunEye: Problem is that there is no way to get rid of the icon from tray or the process GWX in the background.

But I found this: you can uninstall update KB3035583 - and later search for the update and hide it.

I just not sure if it's a good idea - since it might not give you notification when win10 can be downloaded, hopefully it will still reserve your free upgrade..

releases in july, properly patched and bug free in december? it is always best to wait for the kinks and compatibility issues with older programs to get sorted out before adopting a new os. if windows 10 scores well with the press and users, it might be worth a shot to upgrade after 6 years with win 7.

@barking_gman: for those who depend on programs for work-related tasks, i don't think they will adopt a new os and HOPE that everything just works and put up with problems. they will hesitantly make the switch when there is certainty and rightfully so.

Curious about the work side of things.

The xbox app is great and all but wonder about the practical daily functions and what new things it brings now.

I've watched the videos and still know little.

New start button - I guess it combines win 8 metro into the button?

Cortana - I don't use Siri so I doubt I'll use this much

Snap - that's cool I guess

New browser - ok

Same OS on any device? - this worries a little actually.

Touch & write? - I'm curious on this since I have a laptop that flips. It touches now though. The writing seems interesting.

New store - I hope it's a lot better.

Xbox streaming - cool feature but not something I'm likely to use. PC to xbox would be sweet.

Are there other things people know about?

The PC I'm curious about is my work laptop. What functionality it brings.

I'm nervous on that one :).

Gaming wise the feature seems nice. I'll upgrade my gaming PC as that's not as critical.

Was just curious if anyone had practical things they've found that are cool.

@lrdfancypants: A lot of changes are small UI tweaks so you just have to try them out. Some core changes from 8 are universal apps, windowed apps, and virtual desktops. If you're coming from 7, there's also integrated Hyper-V (pro version) and syncing your setting across systems (my favorite).

So an overall improved version of 8?

Small UI tweaks if done right would be worth it.

Does it bring back the clock in the lower right corner? :p

MS why not just stick with windows 7, you know the only GOOD OS you guys made after windows XP. considering MS is basically using everyone as beta testers for a year to fix the many upon many driver faults, buggy UI and incompatible software they will have.

@neowarrior793: Or better still why don't you just go back to MSDOS 6.22, god these arguments get old. Windows 8.1 has been the easiest to use (just right click the windows icon and find any system utility) and the most stable I have ever used.

Except windows 10 has already shown it doesn't have compatibility issues. Windows 7 was great but windows 8.1 is much better. 10 will be twice as fast as 7,not to mention dx12 support

@Zombunny: the same, tough its bound to have a tons of problemas and lacking compatibility at launch with a lot of things, and most of them are games in wich i will be affected, so ill stick until some reviews with windos 7 or after a year of windows 10 release so they fix most of the bad things.
