Windows 10 Coming to Xbox One After PC

Xbox Preview Program members will get to try it first.

Microsoft is planning a phased rollout for its upcoming operating system, Windows 10. The new OS will debut first on PC this summer, following by versions for phones, Xbox One, HoloLens, and other devices later in the year. That's according to a new report from noted Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott, who attended a special event at Microsoft's Build conference in San Francisco today where the details were divulged.

Citing a conversation with Windows executive Joe Belfiore, Thurrott that Windows 10 will arrive for those non-PC platforms "according to their own schedules later in 2015."

Microsoft announced back in January that Windows 10 would be integrated into Xbox One by way of a future update. Xbox boss Phil Spencer assured fans at the time that when the Windows 10 Xbox One update arrives, it won't morph the games console into an enterprise-centric device.

How it will operate is unclear, and whether it will come with a dashboard rearrangement is not known.

"We won't see people using Excel on the Xbox, but Microsoft is making it easier to port experiences from PC over to Xbox where they make sense," Spencer said at the time.

Xbox One Preview Program members will get to try the new Windows 10 integration first. Spencer said on Twitter earlier this week that Preview Program members will be able to test it out "at least" a month before general availability. Access to the Xbox One Preview Program is available by invitation only.

When the update is applied, Xbox One owners will be able to stream their games to Windows 10 PCs. And the cross-device functionality doesn't stop there; Lionhead's upcoming RPG Fable Legends is coming to both Xbox One and PC, featuring cross-platform play.

In other Microsoft news this week from Build, the company signed a deal with game engine Unity for HoloLens, released some stunning HoloLens videos, gave its Internet Explorer replacement an official name, and projected that Windows 10 would reach one billion devices by 2018.

I expect this will be mostly a 'behind the scenes' update for improving interoperability between PCs and Xbox One. It's not like MS is going to abandon their current UI for a Windows 10 UI.

I'm wondering why people bother anymore with Microsoft consoles.

I'm here thinking, do people want a pc or a console?

@fabs1: it is a great idea to be able to stream to the PC. For instance when my wife gets home from work she tells me to turn the xbox off show she can watch TV. So if I want to keep playing I just stream it to the PC and keep playing. What is wrong with that?

The PC has on average 10000 more exclusives on their platform.

Granted not all of them are blockbuster games, but hey when was the last time you played an exclusive rated 10 ? or 9 ?

Those games are rare and might come out once every blue moon.

Consoles anno 2015 are the last of their kind i and suspect the next kind of consoles are streaming devices or steamboxes wich can be upgraded / downgraded to personal preference.

The PC community has been growing alot, a few years back they said PC gaming is dead lol.

Seems its the other way around these days.

All the extra costs these days to pay to play online and insane prices of DLC when you can often find brand new games being sold on sites for almost half the price of the consoles.

PC hardware has never been this cheap, a rock solid gaming pc can be build for 800 euro, this will run 1080P with 60fps with the option to save up for future parts with the money you save from buying cheap games and no play online fee's within 1 or 2 years.

You can even instal a program named Razor Cortex and sit on your couch with a joypad on your TV and lunch games from there without a single mouse or keyboard click.

Times have changed so much :)

For those talking about Xbox 1 being able to play PC games:

It was mentioned awhile back in one of the early articles that streaming PC games to Xbox 1 is on their to-do list, but it won't be available at launch and likely won't be around for another year or two. Of course, that was last year and who knows what they will say at E3, but I wouldn't go expecting it any time soon.

Still, it would be nice if they teamed up with Steam (or better yet, GOG) to release PC games on the platform.

The moment Microsoft puts windows 10 on Xbox One and people start installing Steam, game over. Not only will people start to see how many games they are missing out on but how crap their overpriced hardware is compared to legitimate gaming hardware.

Well this don't at all mean you can play PC Games over the Xbox. I would love to play Arma, or Red Orchestra, Verdun etc over an Xbox, but the opposite is true.

I need much more variety in games in that what Consoles offer. In short, i think console games are dying, and are just not very good.

I'm considering Alienware Alpha, and getting into a much larger volume of games that i in fact enjoy playing. I mean if you're into FIFA, COD Sci Fi, or GTA, i'd stick with Consoles.

For me, i need games more geared towards a more mature audience, and are much more in depth. I just have to see if Alpha has the capability to use Modz (like Invasion 1944), if you don't have any current PC Games, or a PC that is even compatible. Or how it works with Non Steam Store Games (Allied Assault).

I'll do my research, but Steam Boxes are geared for people like myself, who don't want to by a new PC, or the complexity of going thru an arduous process, may be the way to go.

@jagdedge124: I woudn't buy the alienware alpha, but build a pc instead, if need a small form factor then a mini-ITX one, it will be bigger than the alpha, since the alpha uses notebook and low wattage components to to make it that small, but you'll either get it cheaper or get a better pc for the price. In 2015 I would not buy a dual core cpu and the quad core alpha is so expensive (see: far cry will not launch if you have a dual core cpu (unless you download the pirated version as well and install an unofficial fix)). and you probably get a 1 year warranty for the alpha as well, and when you build a pc you can get at least 2 years for every component.

@Defender1978: You could just put your PC next to your TV, and use a wireless mouse and keyboard. Streaming just adds unecessary latency and quality loss. :)

@Defender1978:

If that would ever happen, i'd buy an Xbox One, but PC games are not made or configured to play on a console (with exception of Steam Boxes). The only hope is, future PC games would be Console compatible, but if that were to be the case, PC games like Arma would just come to consoles.

I think what they're saying here, is some Xbox games can be streamed over a PC, which is obviously doable, being most console games do come out on PC as well.

@mrdinghat: You do know that the professional business is MS's core business? Windows 10 isn't about gaming, it's about business. Gaming is just a side project for Windows. Xbox is just a side project for MS, unlike Sony who have to rely almost completely on their gaming biz nowadays... ;)

@LordCrash88@mrdinghat: So Xbox is jut an inferior rip off of PlayStation? The only reason Xbox exists is so Microsoft can maintain a monopoly over PC with their cr*py operating system. If Sony wasn't around Microsoft would be tearing up your b*tt.

Sony doesn't rely entirely on PlayStation. PlayStation doesn't make nearly enough money.

@xboticon@LordCrash88@mrdinghat: I don't think your first passage makes any sense. At least I don't understand what you actually want to say...

About the second one: neither their TV business nor their phones business make good money. So the only thing left is the PS business which indeed is their biggest profit segment in the past few years.

You are clearly a little pony boy butthurt at your non-changing, no-games-having eraser looking sh1tblock, or you are a PC dude butthurt that a console is getting the same special sauce your glorious PCs are. Either way, I hope you have a heart attach tonight and descend to the underworld.

Bad enough the Xbox One struggles in power as it is. Adding Windows 10 is just going to hurt the box's perfomance. Not really happy about this.

@tommynj: Currently, XBox One's operating system uses up about 3GB of memory, and allocates 5 GB to game developers for use in games according to this article:

<< LINK REMOVED >>

According to this article...

<< LINK REMOVED >>

Windows 10 requires 1 GB of memory to operate for the 32 bit OS, and 2GB of memory for the 64bit OS. Of course, that's the bare minimum probably. But, I'm guessing a lot more programming will go into Windows 10, than went into the XBox One OS so it should be more effecient with its use of memory and system resources.

So Windows 10 could actually run a lot better than the Xbox One OS, assuming that it actually replaces it entirely.

Even Windows 8.1 runs pretty efficiently. On my PC, I can do file compression, and burn 3 Blu-rays in the background (3 at the same time), and still run games like Rome 2,or Watchdogs on max settings in the forground, without much perfomance loss.

Anyway, I'm not saying you're wrong... I'm just speculating that Windows 10 might perform better than XBox One's current OS. I don't see why Microsoft would go this route without good cause.

@LordCrash88@tommynj: i have a feeling hes talking about how it wont take the place of the current os but instead operate side by side and the old os will work as a fall back in case of anything happening. newer consoles will probably come pre packed with it but older hardware cant be stripped entirely of their previous identity.
