Wind Waker devs say they considered having beams shoot out of Link's eyes

Nintendo designers recall creator Shigeru Miyamoto saying they needed to come up with a means to justify Link's oversized eyes.

Early in the process of developing the 2003 original The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Nintendo designers considered having beams shoot out of Link's eyes as a means to justify how large they were, it has been revealed.

No Caption Provided

"Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make their facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth," developer Satoru Takizawa said in the latest Iwata Asks interview feature. "Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes! (laughs)."

Takizawa explained that Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto said the development team needed to supply a reason for Link's eyes being so big. However, this feature never made it far. As Takizawa explained, "I don't think [eye] beams were really an option, though."

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD launches digitally through the Nintendo eShop tomorrow, September 20, alongside a special $300 Wii U bundle. The packaged version will be released on October 4.

The Wii U's recently announced price cut also goes into effect tomorrow, with the 32GB system dropping from $350 to $300.

It was a joke, so don't take it too seriously. Was probably something that was laughed about in the office.

At the same time... that would have been amazing. XD

Does there need to be a reason for a character to have big eyes, especially in a cartoony-looking game?

That is some stupid reasoning.

@Ovirew Well, generally there is reason. Young, innocent or good characters generally have big eyes, while old, evil, menacing characters have smaller eyes.

Frankly the way people reacted to the game when it was first announced would call for some justification.

@JoSilver

I don't think the game needed any justification. Nintendo wanted to do something different with Zelda, so they gave us a beautiful cel-shaded game with an ocean overworld. People who took issue with the game for having a younger Link, or for being cartoony, have their own hangups about what a Zelda game should be, I guess.

And yeah, you're right about features like that generally existing because we perceive them as meaning different things. That's actually something that I wouldn't mind seeing storytellers mess with more, actually. Nobody in this world is perfectly good or bad, so why do we let physical traits dictate a character's personality?

That said, there still doesn't have to be some purpose to a character having big eyes. Making them big because they could be used as laser guns is a weird reasoning. Can't they just be big because they're big? Or because Link is a good character, if that has to be a reason?

I love how "larger eyes" naturally led to "what if he shot laser beams out of them?" I know that's what I would have thought!

I'm glad this didn't happen but the idea of it even occuring to miyamoto makes me laugh so hard. Its good that cooler laser beamless heads prevailed.

Actually that would've been hilarious. Seriously I wish laser beam eyes had been added to this HD remake now. Would it make any sense? No. Would it be awesome? Yes.

yeah but they don't put it in! Dante got featured in Shin Megami Tensei 3 and the developers laughed about it but went for it. These devs are trying it on again to promote the game like they always do!

It's their character, they don't have to explain every little feature of it. If they want him to have huge eyes- I don't see the problem

@Razer361 Well, , it's their character, why not explain it? If anything when in the event someone were to ask why at least you have an answer.

@nadnerbgalea I can't imagine it could be more than 4-5GB since the original GC disks were only around 1-2GB. taking into consideration extra size for textures and higher resolution.

Not sure why they needed to justify large eyes. It is, after all, their artistic design. It's a new art direction. Was anyone really worried about this?
