Will Smith Might Play The Genie In Live-Action Aladdin Remake

Will wishes.

Aladdin is one of several live-action remakes of animated Disney classics that are currently in development. Guy Ritchie was announced as director back in October, and it has now been reported that Will Smith is in talks to play the Genie.

According to Deadline, discussions with Smith about the role are "early." The part was played by the late Robin Williams in Disney's original 1992 animated hit.

This isn't the first time that Smith has been in linked with one of Disney's live-action remakes. In January it was reported that he was in talks to appear in Dumbo, but ultimately nothing came of this.

Ritchie is best known for Snatch and the Sherlock Holmes films, with his big-budget fantasy movie King Arthur: Legend of the Sword hitting theaters in May. The new Aladdin film has a script from John August, who wrote the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Other live-action Disney remakes in the works include Mulan, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and a sequel to last year's hugely successful The Jungle Book.

So are they going to make live action versions of every cartoon movie Disney has ever made?

I don't understand why people get so worked up about them changing things in a remake? Not everything is gonna be the same in a remake. And Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie when I was a kid, and even I realize this.

Surprisingly...I can actually hear him playing the role. He's not Robin Williams but...Will's voice might do the trick.

I can see it, especially young Will Smith. People must not know about Prince of Bel-Air. He won't be Robbin Williams genie but he shouldn't have to be.

Disney is on a quest to remake every single fairytale story in live action simply cause they cant think of any new ones.... I'd like to see these stories play out like the dark originals though with Peter Pan being a psychopath and the beast from beauty & the beast basically kidnapping the girl in it.

@computernoises: I blame the consumers really. Nobody wants to hear it but as long as people pay to see these movies they don't have to try and make a new story.

I can't think of a worse actor for that role.

If you are going to do a pointless live remake, at least go with the Broadway actor that played genie who honestly nailed the role without offense to Robin williams' version. James Monroe Iglehart just left for Hamilton, but surely he could do the filming if it accommodated his Broadway schedule.

Sounds like a bomb in the making. there are too many talented comedians that can do a much better job than smith.

As long as he's blue. and carries the spirit and look of the original than that is cool I suppose. At least cheesy one liners are welcome in this type of movie.

I mean, he shit on Isaac Asimov's grave with that iRobot crap. So we've established that this hack of a scientologist has no semblance of shame.

Why not step on over to a way more talented comedians resting place and do the same?

I'm sorry but I don't think its wise to reboot franchises that starred Robin Williams for a few years yet, maybe release special edition blu-rays in his memory, but please don't try and replace him.

@sephirothswing: It already has been a few years. And though he plays a big role he wasn't the star. When people think of Aladdin they first think of the duet song and then maybe William's genie. No one is trying to replace him relax.

@dcoutten: its one of his most iconic and memorable moments. I just don't think its the right time, I know its been a few years but it needs a while longer.
