Wild West Online, The PC MMO That Looks Like Red Dead, Is Out Today In Early Access

You can play Wild West Online right now.

Wild West Online, the PC MMO that bears some resemblance to Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, has been available in a limited test for the past couple months. Today, its reach expands with the launch of the Early Access version that everyone can buy.

The Early Access version of Wild West Online includes a limited selection of what will be in the full release. Some of the content includes server-wide public PvP events, along with quests and missions to take on. The progression system is also in the Early Access version, meaning you can unlock new abilities and get better gear as you play. Some amount of character customization is also featured, while you can also personalize your horse.

Even more content will be added to Wild West Online over time as it approaches its full release later this year, including new public events and more. You can get into Wild West Online today by picking up the Townie ($35), Collector ($94), or Pioneer ($59) bundles through the game's website.

Based on your decisions and actions, you become a law-enforcer, outlaw, or pioneer in the Western Frontier. The game incorporates PvP combat and PvE game missions with world exploration, resource gathering, and treasure hunts.

Wild West Online was originally bound for Kickstarter and Steam Early Access, but secured enough funding from private investors to skip that step and go right into development. The target for its full launch is this December. The game is being developed by a new studio, 612 Games, whose staff worked on games like Crysis and League of Legends.

The raw gameplay footage (Not the stuff the devs released) from a few months back looked disappointing and very underdeveloped, but I shook that off as it being in an early state. However with full release so soon I am now really skeptical, has this actually improved substantially or what's the deal?

I am hoping the game will be in good shape and be fun, but like I said I am skeptical.

@Smosh150: Yeah no, this game looks kinda trash. All these game sites keep comparing it to Red Dead and that's an insult to Red Dead.

@dominoodle: I don't understand the comparison myself, but anyway I fear you are right. Gonna be a pass for me most likely.

@ltjohnnyrico:Let me restate then, I don't understand why it is always compared to Red Dead as it is an MMORPG of which Read Dead is not and nor is the gameplay very similar to Red Dead (Watch some gameplay footage of WWO). Read Dead can technically fall within the RPG category same as GTA, but that subcategory of RPGs it falls in is a far cry from an MMORPG such as WWO. Being in the same/similar setting doesn't constitute it being compared to another game in such a manner either.

It is like saying "Battlefield, The FPS series That Looks Like COD" because of a similar setting and both being FPS games. You can compare the two, but it is silly when the games are quite different. Though I would chalk this up to the lack of games set during this period that are actually open world.

@Smosh150: COD & Battlefield are always compared because they are both FPS Shooters and have both had historic settings like the current Games .. your not getting the hang of this comparison thing are you?

@ltjohnnyrico: i get it, but you fail to grasp the silliness of it and seem to go with "Well eveyone else does it". Battlefield and CoD are always compared, but the games are entirely different from each other. People compare stupid things, and my example as well as this are stupid to compare (The sub genres are different, setting is silly to think that makes it a different setting).

Essentially what you are saying is that ARMA and CoD should be compared to each other as well. They both have similar settings and are also FPS shooters. Do you think this is accurate?

Battlefield is far different from CoD in the exact same way as ARMA is. Battlefield is a large scale FPS shooter focused on Combined Arms with elements that are more in line with real life (It most certainly isn't realistic, but it contains some more realistic features).

Anyway i think we just have far different opinions. Doubt I'd br able to convince you.

@Smosh150: I can just understand the comparisons, FPS shooters in a modern or military setting will be compared .. even if the mechanics/ Games are fundamentally different. See now Arma and Cod is an unfair comparison as while they both are shooters one is a more tactical Mil-sim style experience and the other is an Arcadey shooter - Using Arma for reference it makes it or the more easier to see why COD gets compared to the likes of Battlefield !

A lot of the BF and COD players will no doubt be the same crowd .. COD players that have moved to BF and vce versa and those that play both .. but Arma is a bit more of an acquired taste. That being Said I play Arma and Battlefield as well as other shooters but rarely play COD. But still can see the comparison !

@ltjohnnyrico: Ahhh, I think I just didn't make myself clear. I'm not saying you can't compare or that you can find matching or dissimilar aspect, I'm meaning that I find the games so fundamentally different like you say that comparing them is silly. It is valid sure, but why make the comparison?

Battlefield vs COD I find so different that they are silly to compare when it is done. ARMA should be a valid comparison as well if it can be compared to Battlefield (Which it is) then it can be compared to CoD. ARMA can be a MILSIM but these days it is less so (The community has turned me off from playing it and I can't dedicate myself to units). You can play it just like Battlefield or CoD which was fairly common back in the early days of ARMA 2 (Team Deathmatch was common). It is silly, but it does happen. That is my point that some of these comparisons are silly, not that they can't be compared.

@ltjohnnyrico: Yea same here, especially in the mornings I get a bit pissy. Anyway I should have used better language to say what I mean, my bad.

Just out of curiosity since you play it, what is your take on ARMA 3? I'm good with people having the freedom to play whatever they want on it (Even if I despise some of the modes)? I just really miss the old days with domination and the like being the prevalent modes as well as other modes more focused on the military side. Especially with the mods like RHS and the like hardly used in public servers. Everyone from the old days has fled to Units now and as much as I would love to take part in Units I work on the weekends and don't have access to my PC then.

So much easier when you are running them and do what you want (Though the founder and one of the other co-founders [Not me] pissed the whole unit off by literally berating them in the RP aspect [Took the whole military RP to cringe worthy levels]). Squad is pretty much the new ARMA for me (And Titan Vanguard if the civilian version is ever released and still retains complexity).

@Smosh150: When I am playing Arma I really like to get into the Mil-Sim vibe so I like the focus on the sim side that being said I also miss the old days - Units is good shame you can't get to play it at the moment !

@ltjohnnyrico: Yea, maybe one day when I'm not working in a different city on the weekends. My desktop is a bit too heavy and what not to do take it with me lol (Plus my new CPU cooler won't let me put the side of my case on [It will go on partially, but the top juts out, looks terrible but that cooler is fantastic]. Gonna be fun transferring that when winter break comes around).
