Wii U's New Fatal Frame Is Too Big for Some Systems

If you've got an 8 GB system and no external hard drive, you won't be able to play.

This week's eShop update brought with it the latest entry in the Fatal Frame series, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Unfortunately for those with certain Wii U systems, the digital-only game is too large to download.

No Caption Provided

Black Water offers a trial version that allows access to the first portion of the game. The download for this on the eShop requires 9964.8 MB, already in excess of the 8 GB of storage the lower-end Wii U model is equipped with. Things only get worse if you want to download the remainder of the game (technically offered as a $50 upgrade for the free trial version), which requires an additional 8,186.6 MB download.

While the size of the games is slightly reduced after installation, the initial size is still too large for anyone who doesn't have either a 32 GB Wii U or an external hard drive. (SD cards can't be used to store digital games on Wii U.) Even those with the 32 GB system might be forced to delete some of their games, as the full 32 GB is not usable.

It's not the first time this has happened with a game on a Nintendo system. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D wouldn't fit on the SD card included with New 3DS systems, while last year's Bayonetta combo was too big even for the 32 GB version of the Wii U. We also saw this with Microsoft and Sony's last-gen systems; GTA V updates outpaced the size of some PS3 hard drives, while numerous games can't be played on the hard drive-less model of Xbox 360.

If you're wondering if Black Water is worth any fuss in the first place, check out GameSpot's review.

Ok, aaaaaaaaaaaaand? This happened with the Xbox 360 and I believe the PS3 as well, with their smallest storage models (Or in the 360's case, the model with no storage) being unable to store some of the games. In fact, it got to the point where the Hdd-less Xbox 360 couldn't even store it's FIRMWARE anymore without a memorycard...... this is pretty much why all the systems started supporting external storage. You can get a 1TB USBdrive for like $50.

@Cyber_Akuma: Hell, you can get a 5 TB drive for 90$. I did and it works great on the Xbone.

Easy fix, buy more memory. Think of it like buying an extra controller.

My XB1 has the 500gb + 1tb HDD

Wii U has a 32gb + 64gb USB add on

PC has RAID 0 (C:) + 2 x 2tb HDD's for extra storage.

See the pattern?

A game is bigger than the Wii-U's smallest harddrive? OK. This is news?

What an absolutely pointless article you have made, GameSpot.

Looks like Nintendo's arrogance is catching up to them.

This started over 10 years ago with the Xbox Original. Nintendo criticised the Xbox OG for containing a hard drive, saying that - for some bizarre reason that they never actually explained - the presence of a hard drive somehow removes from the gameplay, and somehow detracts from the gaming side of the console experience. Yes, apparently the ability to install games and run them quickly and efficiently detracts from gaming, and for this reason the idea of hard drives in games consoles was a 'silly' fad that would never catch on....

Since then they have blindly stuck to this motto and they have suffered increasingly every year as a result. We're now in 2015 and they STILL refuse to admit they were completely flat out wrong on this one, their current console still doesn't even have a standard hard drive larger than 8gb's and those that have larger only have 32gb's to play with, and now we're seeing that their stubbornness and refusal to adapt to the modern world has resulted in games being released for their console that cannot be played.

FFS, just admit you were wrong, Nintendo. Stick a 500gb hard drive - hell, a 250gb one would do - in there and start doing console gaming like it's SUPPOSED to be done in 2015. As it is, you're just embarrassing yourself.

What did you expect when you bought an 8gb system? I bought a 8gb thumb drive for $5 that I stuck in the back and have no problems. Only own a few games but it's super cheap and convenient. Wasn't worth the extra $100 for 24gb more of storage unless you just want the black system.

Looks like yet another failure for the Wii U its hard to see this thing making another year.Nintendo should pull out of the hardware industry just do software for Xbox, playstation, mobile, and phones. No use to keep wasting money on these consoles of theirs that don't sell and just hurts the gaming market. Also they keep put a lot more money and time into their handheld

Anyone who bought the 8GB Wii U did that to themselves. Everyone pretty much knew you were going to need an external HDD with that model. Hell I bought the 32GB and still added the old 500GB HDD from my PS4 when I upgraded it to a 1TB. Use your brains people.

Considering how many games the eShop has is I am surprised most don't already have a external hard drive.

cost about $50 for 1TB

HDD space usage on consoles is a joke. I have a 1TB HDD in my PC and with over 30 games installed, 80gb of music, loads of films, all other stuff and the OS I still have 545gb free. Install 6-7 major games on a 500gb PS4 and it's full up.

@oi_oi_spanky:

Same here...I have an SSD for the OS and a 1TB Drive for everything else. I have a 600GB partition for games that's holding over 50 games with 227GB remaining in that partition.

Is buying a external drive really that difficult? Another extra cost, yes. But anyone using the eshop should have one regardless. I get noticeably faster load times running off my hard drive rather than internal flash.

God forbid they release the physical version here, like they are in *every other country* including English speaking ones like the UK and australia. They are even getting a good looking limited edition as you will see in the link below. Only Murrika is getting this gimped weirdo digital version.

Anyone know why Nintendo is publishing the Fatal Frame series instead of Koei Tecmo?

@Moonco: Cause Nintendo now partial owns all future releases. Nintendo also now owns the Spirited Camera Franchise.

@MAXAM999: They had their chance, just as with Bayonetta, Temco come to Nintendo last when all else failed, so Nintendo got that beast for cheap.

Out of all of those space hogging games mentioned, only Fatal Frame V is exclusively digital.

Nintendo of America sucks donkey ass and they know it.

The 8 GB Wii U was really the personification of Nintendo's utter clueness, inability to recognize the importance of digital distribution, and refusal to move into the 21st century technologywise like everyone else. If anyone wonders why Nintendo is flat out losing this gen, look right there.

Doesn't the mandatory system update take like 70% of the space on the 8 GB ones as it is? You can't install jack.

Anyone remember the download for The Last of Us on PS3? Something like 83 combined gigabytes need, because you have to be able to download it AND extract it to install the game. If you bought a system in the first couple years you were pretty much screwed.

Of course, you're still pretty much screwed on PS3 regardless, because the firmware eats up 10% of your hard drive regardless of what size you use. You'd think after 9 years they would fix this.

Why repeating this again?...wasn't there a previous game (a Nintendo one) before this one that's already too big?...or will you be reporting this storage issue again when Xenoblade Chronicles X gets release? cause that game is huge. You buy a Wii U, you're gonna need an external storage if you want to buy digital games. :P

Offering the 8GB model at all was such a cringey typically Nintendo cheapassness. Anyone who bought it was destined to be disappointed. Disappointed right out of the box, even since this became an issue with the massive early system patches. The only saving grace(?) is that the console was so unpopular it wasn't as much of a problem as it could have been.

For people who have the external drives, fine for you, but most people buy consoles to avoid that kind of crap, even though MS and Sony (okay, and all the big publishers) are trying as hard as they can to make the console experience worse than PC.
