Wii U Worldwide Sales Pass 10 Million Units

Console performance for April to June 2015 pushes lifetime sales to new milestone.

Sales of the Wii U have surpassed 10 million units, according to figures released by Nintendo.

The company's latest earnings report states the Wii U sold 470,000 units between April and June 2015. Although this is just short of Nintendo's projections--and is down from the same period in 2014, when it sold 500,000 units--the figure does push life-to-date sales of the Wii U to 10.1 million.

Currently, the Wii U is most popular in the Americas, where Nintendo reports it has managed to sell 4.8 million units to date. Japan, meanwhile, accounts for 2.4 million units. 2.6 million unit sales were attributed to other territories.

Looking ahead, Nintendo has forecasted sales of the Wii U for April to March 2016 will be around the 3.4 million unit mark.

The Wii U was launched in November 2012, followed by Sony's PlayStation 4, a year later. In March 2015, Sony announced the PS4 had sold through more than 20.2 million units and labelled its latest console the "fastest and strongest" growing hardware in all of PlayStation history.

Microsoft has not released recent sales figures for the Xbox One.

Nintendo confirmed its next home console is codenamed the NX in March 2015, but little is known about the hardware. The company has said it does not plan to fully reveal the hardware until 2016.

At the time of its announcement, Nintendo said the NX represents a "brand-new concept," but didn't elaborate further.

A report has indicated that Nintendo could begin assembly of the NX in October, as the company has signed a contract with Foxcon Electronics and wants to begin pilot assembly on the hardware by October "at the latest."

Nintendo has said it will continue to support the Wii U and 3DS after the NX is launched.

"NX is a new platform, so the installed base will have to be built up from zero," it said. "When NX is launched, there already will be a certain volume of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U hardware widely existing in the market, so from a software business perspective, it would be highly inefficient to stop releasing titles for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U right after the launch of NX."

The company has been adamant that the NX is not a simple replacement for the Wii U and 3DS.

I have a WiiU, Xbox One and PS4. I really hope the console succeeds but in all honesty, i haven't powered up the WiiU for months.

Well,thats something at least.
Imo...Nintendo struggeling with the WiiU popularity has not really to do with the specs of the console,it was because of the absense of Nintendos BIG BOMB games.
If there was a proper Mario game at launch,Zelda and Mario Kart short after,people would have bought it like crazy.
Itts been 3 years...THREE YEARS...and still no Zelda?????????
Now with the announcement of a new console,people who even thought of bying a WiiU for Xenoblade or eventually Zelda will wait to see whats with the new thing.
And SE announcing Dragon Quest 11 for the NX console makes it even harder.
Nintendo,the master of games failed to deliver games.

Well now wait a minute, in June people were saying it didn't cross 10 million yet, now they're saying it crossed 10 million in June?! Yeah, it's because financial reports are given in quarters, next one coming in October about the summer, and I expect Wii U to be roughly 10.5 to 11 million units. That will get it nearly at 3 years, so nearly 11 million in 3 years, despite what critics said that it failed to reach 10 million in 3 years! Nice job of saying how it's not doing it, then retracting your words!

@jimclirad:

Oh I think I get it now. You're a plssed off Nintendo fanboy who was dumb enough to drop $250 on a glorified handheld/Wii controller. Now it makes sense.

Wanna nit-pick dates? The 360 has been out what? 10 years? As of June 2014 MS sold over 84 million units. People STILL buy it and STILL play it. I guarantee no one will be playing a Wii U ten years from now. So golf clap on 10 million in 3 years there sport.

Assuming the Wii U does make it 10 years (it won't)...so for every 3 years it sells 10m right? That's only 30.5 million units over a decade. Less than half what the 360 did.

And how you think Nintendo sold 500,000 units in a quarter is laughable dude,

Avatar image for electricocarina

@Gravity_Slave: actually i feel like people will be playing wii u far more in the future than they are right now. Wii U has some franchise bests on it that a lot of people aren't playing simply because they refuse to buy a Wii U. Once this generation passes people will more than likely buy an old used wii u to play games.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@jimclirad: that doesn't change the fact that the wii u is a failure in more ways than one. it underperformed in sales, is barely profitable if even at all, lacks developer support, lacks first part support, is a confusing concept to the public at large, has no specific target demographic and lacks any sense of value due to the short life span it will likely have. you are complaining about a measly one million sales, as if that will change the fate of the wii u and all of its failures.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

10 million huh? Not saying a lot. It's been out for almost 3 years now. But so has the 360.

(Edit)

The Xbox 360 sold over 10 million units in under 3 years. It's all about perspective.

But the real question is staying power. The Wii lost gamers just a year after launch due to a lackluster 1st party game library and sub-par hardware (when compared to the PS3 and 360). Eventually ending up collecting dust on the shelf while gamers STILL play on the 360 and PS3.

The Wii U was an overall flop with front end moderate success. Even Iwata admitted about the Wii U that he "...underestimated the popularity of smart phones and tablets."

@Gravity_Slave: "XBox 360 sold over 10 million units in under 3 years"- so did the Wii U! November 2012- June 2015 is just over 2 1/2 years, not 3, not 4!

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@jimclirad:

Omg are we really going there? Fine, my bad....from Nov 2012-now it's 2 years and 9 months. That's basically 3 years dude.

Still the same time frame as the xbox 360 and still not better than any other system.

Again, my point was staying power and beefing up less than stellar sales. (My 360 comparison) So far, Nintendo has none.

@Gravity_Slave: Wii U is almost 3 years, also you cant be numbers 1 forever. Im just happy Nintendo still leading the gaming industry with 3DS and all their awesome games. Hopefully NX will become number 1.

@mesome713:

Okay, I gave it to jimClirad (time frame) but you're are dead wrong man.

Hate to break it to ya but Nintendo hasn't been number 1 since 1992 there sport. Nintendo has been shutting down major HQ's across the globe and shutting down apps and services for the last few years.

The only reason the Wii sold well (initially) is because people were willing to buy anything new with Nintendos name on it at the time. Now all those Wii's collect dust while ppl still play the PS3 and 360.

Nintendo has consistenly been in 3rd in sales and popularity with consoles since the GameCube...4th overall in platforms with PC included. So where you're getting that it's leading the game industry is a fanboy mystery.

@Gravity_Slave: wii stomped 360 and ps3, i think its the second highest selling console of all right behind PlayStation2. the main problem is that Nintendo has HUGE parts in both handhelds and consoles, effectually splitting their market. if u want to bash a company and not just wii u, u need to look at Nintendo as a whole. they are controlling handhelds w/o even trying. thirdly, they do so against Microsoft and Sony...... two of the Largest, richest, company with resources in everything, most importantly entertainment hardware, and software. Nintendo just makes game and still able to hold its head high.

Avatar image for bochcoch

@Gravity_Slave: wait a minute wii sold over 100m so how did they lose last gen... plus nobody can touch them in the handheld department. Nintendo has enough money they could make another console as bad as wii u and still be safe

Avatar image for deactivated-58ce94803a170

@Gravity_Slave: Sorry mate, but Nintendo has been number 1 ever since NES. Nintendos handhelds have dominated the gaming industry. Even the 3DS is destroying all and leading the gaming industry. Plus N3DS will help 3DS sell even more.

Every gen Nintendo competes with itself releasing a handheld and home console. Its why they are so rich.

@mesome713:

Number 1 in your mind maybe. But sales figures don't lie.

See that squiggly purple line dropping past the green (X1) and red (PS4) ones? That's the Wii U tanking over time. The Wii's chart looks worse. It's thru the floor compared to the PS3 and 360. Your a delusional fanboy...You fail. Sorry mate.

@Gravity_Slave: You can hardly use the "bad sales" card here the Wii beat out the ps3 and 360.

Avatar image for deactivated-58ce94803a170

@Gravity_Slave: True, 3DS has sold more then Xbox One, Vita, Wii U, and PS4 put together.

Avatar image for Gravity_Slave

@mesome713:

1st the 3DS is a handheld not a console. Might as well compare car or umbrella sales.

2nd Um No. You are dead wrong again. The Nintendo 3DS only sold 53 million units as of June 2015. The 3DS is 4 years old. Thats approx. 13 million a year. So the 3DS did not sell more than all those combined.

Are you really such a fanboy that you're so blind to the facts?

Avatar image for deactivated-58ce94803a170

@Gravity_Slave: 1st, Nintendo is Nintendo, they are number 1 in the gaming industry.

2nd, 3DS is a handheld console.

My Wii U has not been turned on since two weeks after smash bros released. There is just no support for it and the absence of third party once again has killed a Nintendo system.

I love Nintendo but honestly I have no interest in playing a splatoon game with amiibos when I can play the Witcher and GTA5 on my other console.

@Thanatos2k:

You say that like you won something. FYI stupid...the 360 already sold 10 million units after just 3 years of launch. The Wii U's been out for FOUR years. The sad thing is people will still be playing on the 360 long after the Wii U ran it's course. You Fail.

Avatar image for electricocarina

@Gravity_Slave: I love how you keep trying to compare the 360 to the Wii U, a console that was beaten by the original Wii, as apposed to comparing it to the Xbone, which would make far more sense considering its a console of the same gen as Wii U. Could it maybe be because the Xbox one hasn't really sold very much more than the Wii U?

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@Gravity_Slave: What does the 360 have to do with any of this? If you're bringing that up, the Wii destroyed the 360 in sales.

and here i thought wii u was closer to 12m units sold... ouch. i don't think it will even surpass 15m lifetime sales at this rate. mario maker is the only glimmer of light (sales wise) for the rest of 2015 followed by zelda in late 2016. that's all folks.

Wow, it took almost 3 years to reach 10 million sales lol, and now they're already making another consoles so the Wii U is at the end of its life. Just goes to show that gamers have developed a more variable gaming pallete and nothing but animated kids games just dont do it anymore

Avatar image for AttackOfTheCat

@subsided94: 'Variable gaming pallete' - gritty shooters, fantasy games and remakes is hardly varied. I have a PS4 and Wii U and can tell you lack of varied quality games is not a problem for Wii U. Both good consoles in different ways

Avatar image for PsychicKiller82

@subsided94: I agree with you, none of the cartoonish graphics on the Wii U please me, I would rather the most life like graphics possible. This is why the X1 and PS4 have sold more consoles where you get great third party support.

@PsychicKiller82: o i get it your one of the those people who could care less what the game is about or if its even fun. As long as the graphics are top notch and every virtual hair on a characters body moves independently in the breeze you'll buy it.
