Wii U Production to End on November 4, Says New Report

Nintendo could begin wrapping up Wii U production this week.

Nintendo will end Wii U production on November 4, a new report has suggested. Citing "multiple sources," Eurogamer reports that the deadline for the final batch of Wii U consoles was October 31, and the Japanese production line will shut down once these have been fulfilled.

The Wii U launched in November 2012 and, as of September 30, it has sold 13.36 million units. This is considerably less than the 100 million figure Nintendo internally projected the console would sell. Although Nintendo is yet to officially announce Wii U production is ending, the timing makes sense.

The company's next platform, Nintendo Switch, is scheduled to launch in March 2017. The console/handheld hybrid was officially unveiled on October 20 and Nintendo has said it will announce the Switch's price, launch lineup, and specs on January 12. There will be no further information on the Switch until then.

Nintendo expects to ship 2 million Switch consoles during its launch month of March 2017. The only launch game that has confirmed for Switch is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will also be available for the Wii U. However, during its Switch reveal video there were a number of other games briefly shown, including new or updated versions Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon.

There was also a mysterious 3D Mario game, as well as Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Nintendo cautioned that the announcement trailer only showed "short glimpses of representative gameplay to demonstrate the liberating nature of the Nintendo Switch home gaming system." For its part, Bethesda said although Skyrim hasn't been confirmed for Switch, it will support the console.

I can't believe that Bethesda will have anything to put on the Nintendo console. They don't know how to take advantage of non-standardized systems.

What happened to "we'll still support the Wii U after the launch of the NX" Nintendo?

Avatar image for freeryu

@louixiii: Can still support the 12 million Wii U's out there.

@freeryu: I hope so. If they don't I'll be mad but not because of the lost of support..but because they gave their word.

@louixiii: Yeah hopefully, just bought a Wii U like 2 months ago.

@freeryu: Really. Did you pick up Smash Bros? If not, pick it up and Mario Kart 8. They are definitely worth it

Avatar image for freeryu

@louixiii: Yeah picked up Smash and Mario Kart 8. Haven't laughed this much in a game in a while. I'll probably pick up Super Mario 3D World and that's it. Now I know how Nintendo can sell 12M+ consoles with no 3rd party support. Their exclusives are pretty damn good.

Goodbye, Wii U.

The Nintendo Vita will do better

13.36 million Wii U consoles sold since November 18th 2012. Nintendo ending further production of the Wii U console, So that would mean a final total of 15 or 16 million lifetime sales for the Wii U depending on how many Wii U consoles remain unsold on store shelves worldwide.

Nintendo is wise to begin production of Nintendo Switch consoles, Nintendo hopes to have 2 million Nintendo Switch consoles at March 17th 2016 launch. This batch should sell out. Their are at least 2 million die hard Nintendo fans left worldwide. Hopefully Nintendo will find the sweet spot for Nintendo Switch pricing. Nintendo cannot price the Nintendo Switch at PlayStation 4 Pro level. Nor can Nintendo price the Switch at Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 slim level. Since the Nintendo Switch is not quite as powerful as the regular PlayStation 4 or Xbox one.

Nintendo has to get the price just right for the Switch to avoid the same fate as Wii U. Those 2 million Nintendo Switch consoles will sell out at launch to the Nintendo loyal rabid fan base. But getting people to Switch to Nintendo could be a problem. Wii U is now dead as of November 4th 2016. Nintendo is quick to Switch over and try their luck with the 7th Nintendo home console.

There were a few Wii U games I wanted to pickup but no games die any more, so I'll just wait for the re-release on, I assume Android, if their next system is ARM based.

I would recommend not taking this article too seriously. It's been announced before that production would be stopped earlier and the prediction was wrong.

I wish Nintendo would have dropped the price to $149, I would of bought one just for MK8. I will never understand why they kept the price at $249 instead of taking a loss and selling more software.

@b00me: $299.

@b00me: yea, hard to believe there wasn't a proper price drop on the wii u some 4 years after launch. it's quite ludicrous actually. they could have sold a few more of them... i would have considered picking one up for $150 or so as well. though, in hindsight, i'm glad i didn't with the switch right around the corner and all the supposed wii u games that will eventually get ported over.

Avatar image for deactivated-5ab3d29749ec4

@Xristophoros: Yeah i never paid for mine i traded my Vita for a Wii U 32gb with a Pro Controller Zombie U and Call of Duty Black Ops 2 best trade ever would of never bought a Wii U for the price it was and still is at

Toughest part right now finding games at a decent price because unless it goes to the Nintendo Select brand games stay at 79.99 even used most of the games seem to be 40-60 dollars wish they did sales like PSN and Xbox Live does

@ratchet989: yea, good point about the prices of wii u games. i don't expect them to fall, either. many of which are hard to find as well since nintendo has a habit of limiting the print runs of many titles. even first party wii games hold their value despite there being millions of them in the wild. hopefully nintendo will be better with its sales and marketing strategies when the switch releases. one can hope.

@Xristophoros: Price drops dont work good, Sony price dropped Vita and still no one cared.

wow, just 4 years in production... that is unheard of for consoles. nintendo killed the wii u as fast as they could which is the right thing to do, but sad nonetheless. and this is after nintendo promised that they would continue wii u support and that the "nx" (at the time) was not an all out replacement? hehe i knew they didn't mean it... the wii u has been on one leg for the past 12 months already... still, it's not good practice to flat out lie to your customers like that.

i expect these to be rather hard to find in a few years time... not because they are in heavy demand, but because so few of them exist in the world. i recently picked up a vita for this very reason. so long as nintendo ports the bulk of the wii u library to the nx, the wii u will be long forgotten in no time.

@Xristophoros: Wii U still has Zelda coming, thats more support Sony can state for poor Vita. Yet for some strange reason we never see you criticizing your beloved Sony. Id be embarrassed too though. Wii U might have performed poorly, but not that poorly.

@iandizion713: I suppose if you think less than 1/4 (13.36 Million) out of the estimated 100 Million for projected sales isn't poor....

@owlcoholic: I never stated it wasnt poor, i stated it was impressive due to the circumstances it faced.

Avatar image for soliaired50

@iandizion713: From what I can see, the vita is still selling and has more games coming to it than the Wii U...of course, that's just in Japan, but still more successful than the Wii U either way. And I never see you saying anything negative about Nintendo either, so you're really not that much different than him.

Avatar image for iandizion713
iandizion713

@soliaired50: Why would i have to be pessimistic about stuff i love. At least you dont see me spending every day for years hating on stuff i dislike. And have been very critically of Nintendo. But i refuse to whine about them. I got better stuff to do with my time, like play Wii U and 3DS games. I just finished Captain Toad and it was amazing, 9/10.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@iandizion713: sony didn't lie to its customers and claim that they would continue first party vita support. rather, they blatantly stopped first party support when they realized they were losing money on it. if you can't turn a profit and the market isn't biting, you pull the plug. that is business. the vita failed for a variety of reasons but at least sony tried to boost sales with the slim refresh and price drops. looks like nintendo gave up on the wii u after its second year.

hehe you only see what you want to see man. i criticized sony for the ps+ price increase, taking resources away from first party games in favour of vr support (which i am not a fan of) as well as releasing the ps4 pro which goes against my principles as a console gamer. i don't agree with sony on any of those issues and yet you claim i never criticize them? maybe it is about time you woke up. if only you could see the drivel you write on a daily basis.

Avatar image for iandizion713

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@iandizion713: an informed opinion and stating the unfortunate truth about something is not hating. i guess in your eyes, anyone who is not hugging and flattering nintendo is a hater lol... grow up.

Avatar image for iandizion713
iandizion713

@Xristophoros: When someone spends years talking about stuff they dislike all the time, yeah, its hating. You hate on Nintendo more than you talk about Sony which is your fav. Its sad. It seems you enjoy the hate on Nintendo game more than you do the Sony game.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@iandizion713: does anything you say make sense or have any truth to it? if you read up on the switch reveal comments, you will see that i praised nintendo for unifying its two markets into one. i have been wishing for them to do that for quite some time now and believe it will be a good move for them. i am cautiously optimistic about the switch, but you won't find me hating on it. there is a good chance i will pick one up if nintendo can sort out its 3rd party issues and the switch turns out to be a hit. i will criticize a company when it is justified... the wii u lacks praise for good reason.

Anyone even remotely interested that doesn't have one needs to get one now. The Wii U is very underrated, with a very solid library. It will be one of the more expensive systems to collect for in the years to come.

Avatar image for deactivated-5861e28463500

@RossRichard: Tell me about the library of games. I don't care about the console.

So much for the Switch "not being a replacement" for the Wii U/3DS according to Nintendo. Not that I didn't expect this anyway, but they should have just come out and admitted it from the beginning. I got my money's worth out of the system regardless.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

Might get just to play the Mario games and Zelda.

too bad it didn't go the way nintendo like, people was confused and thought that the gamepad was just a wii add-on and never thought wii u as a whole new system back then. anyway i love my wii u, still using to play games alittle and browse the internet alot with it.
