Wii U, 3DS Smash Bros. still 'years' away - Report

Project Sora head Masahiro Sakurai says all his studio's resources are devoted to Kid Icarus completion.

Nintendo launched the 3DS in March, and one of the biggest criticisms leveled at the device was the absence of big-name first-party franchises available for the new device. With many of those franchises--including Mario Kart, Star Fox, Super Mario, and Kid Icarus--confirmed for release this year, the publisher said at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo that the Smash Bros. franchise is also en route for the 3DS and newly unveiled Wii U console.

Don't expect a new Smash Bros. anytime soon.
Don't expect a new Smash Bros. anytime soon.

Unfortunately, it appears as if gamers won't be seeing those new installments in the crossover 2D fighter franchise anytime soon. As part of a weekly column in Famitsu magazine (translated by 1Up), Project Sora director of software development Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that the two Smash Bros. games are still several years off.

"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai wrote. "We've got no plans whatsoever--we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

Sakurai went on to note that while his studio was prepared to bring the Smash Bros. franchise to the 3DS, plans for the Wii U installment were a bit more impromptu.

"Project Sora had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros. once it had finished up a game on the system and had gotten used to the hardware's feature set," he wrote. "With the advent of the Wii U, though, we had a choice to make. Iwata asked us if we wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms."

As for why the game will be arriving on both the 3DS and Wii U, Sakurai said that it was the best way to grow the franchise.

"If we went solely for the Wii U, the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race," he said. "If we made this game another extension over previous one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay we can put it."

"It wouldn't be a fruitful competition, but doing something completely new would be difficult for many reasons, not least of which that the gamers may not be satisfied with it," he continued. "That's why we decided to think about ways to link the personal connection one has with his portable system to the gather-around-and-play aspect of console systems."

Nintendo currently expects to launch the Wii U sometime between April 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012. For more on the system, check out GameSpot's Nintendo Wii U: Inside and Out feature.

Funny, I remember Sakurai saying he was 100% done with Smash. Well I hope the next Smash won't have random tripping and all that noob-helping bs Brawl had. And plz no Final Smashes and unknown online players... seriously.

With Brawl they did pretty much everything you could do with this Franchise. Its just gonna get stale cause you know its gonna be exactly the same thing. They should just make a new franichise instead of milking it. Also cant imagine Nintendo would really take advantage of HD hardware anyway. I feel that it would be exactly the same graphics but in HD.

I'm sure it will be great...but since ALL of nintendo's most attractive (to me) games seem to be years away, my purchase of both the 3ds and WiiU is also years away. At least I have Skyward Sword to look forward to.

No surprise here. Brawl was also announced several years before it came out.

Nintendo could have waited more time to talk about the SMB for the 3DS, now I gonna have to wait a long time..... But its always good to know that one of my favorite games of all times is going to 3DS XD. Seriously, I still like to get the N64 SMB and play it, its so good.

I wouldn't mind this if they had revealed anything else. The Wii U wasn't ready to be announced, and as a result all they had were ideas, but no actual games.

Ohh that's just funny, way to bomb on your most exciting announcement at E3 Nintendo -.-, you reveal games at E3, not plans of games, If anything, the new smash bros is a discussion of a plan of a game. But w/e I suppose I really don't mind waiting a few more years, maybe if they had some HD screenies or even some concept art out, that would hold me over till then *o*

i don;'t mind the wait, i'm hoping for a massive improvement over brawl. melee in my opinion and in the opinion of many was and still is the definitive SB game. brawl was great, dont get me wrong, i just felt it could've been better. here's to hoping that the SB game is optimised for both platforms seperately, while maintaining the connectivity between the two. meaning i hope they squeeze as much out of the wii u as they can in terms of graphics and new gameplay abilities, as well as take full advantage of the 3D feature in 3DS. one huge benefit of games appearing on both platforms is the use of 2 screens, one of them being a touch screen. so both versions could have the same touch functionality. i have high hopes.

I'd like to see the next Smash Bros. have a more interesting single player experience. You can't have friends over every single day to play Smash, so it'd be nice to have something else to do. It'd also be cool to see some more new faces in the game- characters from Metal Gear Solid, Okami, No More Heroes, Sonic, Resident Evil, Mega Man, stuff like that.

Take all the time in the world you need Sakurai, I'm in no rush. Brawl has enough content to keep me occupied until then.

People act like this is surprising. There were 6 and a half years between Melee and Brawl, so I'm expecting a similar distance between Brawl and the next one. Quality games take time to make!

"years?" the Wii-U need a strong launch title. it would be great if they would have released it as a launch title and it would also be great for the 3DS too.. the 3DS needs lots more good games its kinda sad to know were going to have to wait a long time.......

I remember when Brawl came out they were saying that they wanted to make it "as if it was the last Smash Bros." The fact that they officially announced one is, I'm sure a relief to those who thought the series was finished. But yeah, I don't expect it to magically appear next year. Nintendo barely had any games officially started for the Wii U. That's how recently the hardware was finalized. The game announcements will start coming fast and furious. I don't want Smash Bros. to be rushed.

I would not mind a new Donkey Kong game based after the original arcade design with updated graphics and a ton of new content to conquer:) Kind of like Pac Man Championship Deluxe:) This would satisfy me while I wait for the new games. In 3D would be sweet as well.

I'm not surprised actually, if they have yet to work on it I wouldn't want them to rush it so it comes out within the next year or two, that'd be stupid.

just the normal cycle. anticipation and waiting for what seems like forever, hype hype hype until the game drops, everyone plays it for a couple weeks, then forgets about it and on to the next game. i think more time is spent waiting for games and watching teaser trailers than actually playing them.

I'm not surprised about this. If the next Smash Bros. isn't even in the predevelopment stages yet then it is definitely going to take a few years. I would guess Q4 2014 at the earliest.
