Wii Sports Resort sells 1.25M, gets second MotionPlus pack-ins

Nintendo's limited-edition $59.99 minigame compilation offers pair of precision-enhancing add-ons beginning Oct. 12; Wii Sports sequel hits US milestone, peripheral sells 2.9M.

Nintendo of America vice president of corporate affairs Denise Kaigler spoke with GameSpot yesterday following the publisher's announcement that it would be cutting the Wii's price tag to $199 as of September 27. As part of that interview, Kaigler noted that Nintendo, along with its third-party partners, is actively at work on "leveraging that technology into other games."

Nintendo is doubling up on the Wii MotionPlus.
Nintendo is doubling up on the Wii MotionPlus.

Today, Nintendo announced its latest effort to increase the installed base of the Wii MotionPlus accessory, announcing a new Wii Sports Resort bundle. Beginning October 12, Wii Sports Resort will include two Wii MotionPlus add-ons at the $59.99 price point--up from the standard $49.99 peripheral package. The Wii MotionPlus stand-alone offering carries a $19.99 price tag, translating to a $10 savings on the bundle, which will be available in limited quantities.

Through August, Wii Sports Resort has sold more than 1.25 million units in the US, according to Nintendo. The publisher also noted that Wii MotionPlus sales have reached nearly 2.9 million units. That figure encompasses units included with Wii Sports Resort, as well as the 257,000 that came packed in with EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and 1.36 million stand-alone units sold.

Support for Nintendo's precision-enhancing peripheral has thus far been spotty. In addition to the already-released Wii Sports Resort and EA's Tiger Woods and Grand Slam Tennis, notable Wii MotionPlus-compatible games on the horizon include Ubisoft's Red Steel 2, James Cameron's Avatar, and Academy of Champions. However, few other developers have announced support for the peripheral.

@ ftjx It's not that you are betrayed by a company it is just that they didn't follow the vision that you thought that they had. Originally it looked like the Wii would flourish with excellent titles from 3rd parties like the DS (kind of) has. However the Wii doesn't offer those experiences. \ \ I really don't see what people will be playing on their Wii in the near future that would even compare to Dragon Age, Uncharted, Boarderlands, God of War 3, Eye Pet (yes Eye Pet), Batman, Forza, Call of Duty. \ \ Where is the innovation like Pikmin, Starfox for the SNES ??? And so many others??? You give me Wii Fit......I give you, me NOT buying your next console.

They should ship this thing to every wii owner. I think I'll get one next week, I'd rather pay 10 dollars more and not take home that Wii Sports crap.

I wish they would've launched with two, that is a $10 loss on my part. Very fun to use though, been playing it with the family for about a month and lovin' it. Now, I think a Wii Zelda date is in order.

Two periphericals with Wii Sports Resort is a very good deal. Unfortunately, Nintendo has no third party developers. If they haven't been able to make a good game with the regular controls, imagine with the Wii Motion plus.

drop the price-check. throw in wii-motion plus controller upgrade in the box-still waiting. at 100 dollars cheaper than the PS3, the wii at $200 isn't looking like such a great deal anymore.

Bigbudd0045 - Nintendo is a business how can you feel betrayed by a company? if you don't like their products don't buy them! .....'this generation nintendo gave the finger to hardcore gamers.' I don't even know what to say to this. If american car makers started making smaller cars like their european and japanese counter parts, would you feel betrayed by them aswell?!?!?! What you say about attach rate is true but I don't think the blue ocean strategy has an attach rate segment in the traditional sense.

I'll pick a copy up now that it has two included addons.

Until first party games like Mario or Zelda support the peripheral I don't think it will ever take off too well

@taylormadederek, i have to agree with you, with a few exceptions, Mario and Zelda are great game play experiences, but yeah, this generation nintendo gave the finger to hardcore gamers. Say what you want about the Gamecube, it had the games, ill hold up Metroid Prime, Re4, Viewtiful Joe, Windwaker, Smash Bros Melee, Tales of Symphonia against anything the PS2 and Xbox had. Nintendo's lack of concern about keeping up with the graphics and online evolutions of the medium are just sad. I bought a wii and aside from Galaxy i dont play anything on it other then the virtual console anymore (my vast vc collection is the reason i havent sold it). Nintendo's blue ocean strategy is already showing weakness, look at attach rates for the wii, non gamers buying it buy a system and an extra controller, then maybe wii fit and mario kart. the 360 has an attach rate of 8, companies make money on the wii because development costs are so low, but the hundred million dollar plus sellers for them are largely on 360, or are 360/ps3 exclusive. Nintendo maybe the market leader, but for us, the types who actually read sites like gamespot and ign and such, 360 is the market leader. While nintendo has almost all of my all time favorite games, and two of my five fav franchises (Zelda and Metroid) it isnt making games that appeal to me anymore. I love nintendo for what they were, not what they are now. Except the DS, that system fn rocks.

I finally played Wii Sports Resort this week and it was very fun. The sword fighting was challenging. Anyone who says it isn't for hardcore gamers doesn't know what they are talking about.

@kiramasaki - I'd prefer that you try it out before you make negative comments on it. The technology with Wii Motion Plus has really improved the motion sensing, almost to the point, if not at the point, where it's completely realistic. The reason we play it is the same reason you play Madden (football) and Halo. (laser tag)

Of course I have Mario as my character. That image of Mario is one of the best in gaming. I am a gamer. I am not partial to any one system, I own them all and play games that are good on all of them (not the Wii, anymore, sadly). \ \ Even the Metroid game, New Mario Wii, and another Zelda don't interest me anymore. Nintendo has lost the direction and focus that made it so "magical". Sure it has found great success but at the price of innovation and imagination. \ \ If you appeal to the masses you are not likely to have too many unique "things" about you. Nintendo has given up their uniqueness for money.....That is fine with me if that is the direction that they want to go but I will not be there to support them.

1.25 mill. not enough!!! you(Nintendo) should have launched this game in a bundle with the Wii and two wiimotes with built-in motion+. THATS THE LEAST YOU COULD HAVE DONE if I were you(Nintendo) I would have done so and included the balance board. Then I would take out the dvd-drive and put in a 20GB harddisk with Wii sports resort, Wii fit+ and Wii play installed. From here on future Nintendo software would be DLC and when you turned on the system some gorgeous blond chick would demonstrate the games on your harddisk(or whatever its called) and then explain about 'the internet' and how to connect your Wii. This is what you all hate I know but since I have stocks in the big N and believe in innovation as akey to survival and therefore absolutely love Nintendo,I think otherwise. On a sidenote reading all your stupid comments and alike from profesional analysts like Pachter(casuals will never move to an HD system -this is the blue ocean) would surely amuse and infuriate me. and yes I do know Nintendo doesn't read nerdy gaming sites like this, but I sure let of some steam there didn't I.........didn't I?.......hallo? is anybody listening? oh crap!

I like having a console with a library of unconventional games. It's not always shooting Nazis and terrorists. Definitely will wait for the double bundle. They should've done that from the get-go. Why package only one with the a disc full of party games?

Nice to see that Wii Motion Plus is selling well. Hopefully this will encourage some more games with it. Wii Sports Resort was great, but I'd like to see just one game REALLY take advantage of it. Can't wait for Red Steel 2.

Yes, over a milli! And people complain nowadays about Nintendo and only want shooting or fighting games. I love shooters and other games, but I also like to have games like Wii Sports Resort. It's just so innovative and fun to play with by yourself or with others. It was truly one of the best 2009 games I ever played. I am glad they are making a new bundle for it.
