Wii Fit U launching November 1 as free download

Nintendo offering latest fitness game as free download this fall for one month, after which players must purchase $20 Fit Meter to keep it.

Wii Fit U will be available as a free download starting on November 1, Nintendo announced today. Beginning on that date, Wii U owners with a Wii Balance board and Internet connection can download the game and keep it for one month.

After that, they must purchase a $20 Fit Meter--available beginning November 1--and sync it with the game to keep the full version of Wii Fit U. The full Wii Fit U software will be downloadable from the Nintendo eShop between November 1, 2013 and January 31, 2014.

A $50 packaged version of Wii Fit U combined with a Fit Meter will go on sale December 13, 2013, alongside a $90 bundle combining Wii Fit U, the Fit Meter, and a Wii Balance Board. A "full price" digital version will launch on February 1, 2014.

The Wii Balance board is required for Wii Fit U and will not be sold separately.

The Fit Meter accessory is described as not merely a pedometer, but rather an "activity meter" that records steps taken, intensity of steps, and altitude. These data points are combined to calculate calories burned and can be transferred wirelessly to Wii Fit U using the GamePad.

The original Wii Fit sold 22.67 million copies, while Wii Fit Plus shifted 20.86 million units globally.

While the Wii Sports Club pricing is preposterous, this is actually pretty good. Early adopters only have to spend $20 total to get the game (or $40 if you don't have a balance board..which you can get used) rather than the $40-$100ish required depending on whether you have the board or not. I don't actually plan on buying this, but I will download it anyway in case I ever decide to...that way I can have the cheaper entry point.

@amk11 @Ladiesman17 Was wondering about that myself. A $20 activity meter is a great bargain; FitBits go for $100 and have very similar functionality. Combine that with the perfectly good Wii Balance Board and you get an amazing tool for one's fitness regimen for very low cost. I've lost upwards of 80 lbs since I got the original Wii Fit ... it wasn't the only tool I used, but it is one of several, as it should be.

$20 sounds like a good price to me. I have the Wii Balance Board, and the Fit Meter is the only gadget I need to complete my Wii Fit U set.

If you have a balance board, the game is free for one month. Add in a Pedometer for 20 bucks, and that's pretty much the price for the game. It's brilliant, actually. Rope in the casuals with a free game and at the same time, make 20 bucks by selling an accessory that is very useful for monitoring fitness (NSA free too).

This isn't a game people it is an exercise routine. I would laugh about this as well if it didn't get me into shape a few years back. If anyone out there is in need of getting in shape get this it works. I am getting it just to stay in shape. $20 for this or $300+ for a treadmill which only does one thing it's an easy choice for me.

I don't know why everybody is basing this Wii Fit U, the way I see it, I use Infinity Fitness videos without the Exercise machines and Wii Fit U is just for Parents to get there kids into shap was they think it's part of a Video game. Xbox Kinect had ths and I see no one Bitch about it so why basing on Nintendo?
