When Nintendo announced earlier this week that Wii production in Japan had ended, it was unclear if this would affect availability in the United States.

As it turns out, this announcement was related only to Japan. Wii availability in the United States will not be impacted, a Nintendo of America representative told GameSpot today.

"The announcement that the Wii console has been discontinued is specific to Japan," the representative said. "There is no change in the status of Wii in the United States, and it is available for purchase this holiday season."

The Wii, which has already sold over 100 million units across the world, is entering its eighth holiday season on the market. The systems starts at $130 for a bundle that includes Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.

A preowned Wii system will go for $50 at GameStop on Black Friday in the United States, according to a recently leaked advertisement from the retailer.

"A preowned Wii system will go for $50 at GameStop on Black Friday in the United States, according to a recently leaked advertisement from the retailer" You can buy a Wii for less than a full priced retail game? Funny.

It was rubbish anyway.

Also won't affect actual gamers that have moved on long ago.

Yeah right - you discontinued it for the U.S. too. Problem is stores still have warehouses full of them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't know how popular the Wii is in USA, but I'd think it's more popular in Europe, not to mention Asia. Either way, if someone wants a Wii, but hasn't bought one yet, it's good that they're still available.

If you're not using a Wii as a doorstop by now then you aren't gonna get one.

Other than the rainfall games and TP, the Wii has not had a new game released in years. The system has been all but dead for a while, so of course this won't affect availability because I can't imagine anyone is still sitting thinking man, I need a brand new wii.

I knew it. Why would they stop? It still sells. There's a few gems out there for it but I suspect most casuals use it for Netflix and Hulu.

People still buy and play Wii? Lies, I say!

No one wants one anymore anyway. Irrelevant.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It'd be better if they got Wii U's instead. The Wii has already sold over 100 million units, it doesn't need more success.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. Nintendo needs to get on the ball and realize that they need to stop supporting a dead console and support the console that is danger of being dead before its time to die.

So it is still in production in the US or there's enough on the market that there's no worry for availability? Message is rather unclear here.

It will be "available" in the US for years to come. People will be trying to get rid of theirs for the next 2 decades.

It's been dead since The Last Story (aptly fitting title) and Xenoblade Chronicles were released.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Since The Last of Us is PS3 exclusive I wonder how long it'll take before those consoles can say to each other in the store: We're the Last of Us.

I'm looking forward to filling out a Wii game collection this holiday season. And I wouldn't be surprised that a Wii collection will be worth as much as my saturn collection. lol even my GCN collection has been appreciating in value very nicely. Too bad that the fanboys won't realize that their elitism is only making me money.

<< LINK REMOVED >> No collection will ever cost as much as the Saturn. It has the biggest jumps in values through time as well. Saturn will remain the king there forever. Wii is one of the best selling consoles of all time, it has the lowest levels of chance for having the rarest sought after value.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> ahh but many games had limited runs and only so many copies made. Xenoblade chronicles and the Metroid Trilogy for example. There will be rare gems out there. There are some out there now. Get a hold of those and you'll see the value increase dramatically over the years.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> bunch....bunch....while i agree with u that some of those titles are poised to become collector items...

its batshit insane whats happened with the saturn and i dare say the events that created such an enviroment, are highly unlikely to be repeated.

> wii u

And again nothing of Value was lost. My Wii is already inside a box in my Garage with only Exclusive games and most unplayed. And there it shall remaine. Wii I Salute you.

The US Wii doesn't have Gamecube compatibility anymore so it isn't something I'd buy even if mine broke.

I actually feel this is a BAD thing, if they finally let the Wii die here, then consumers will be forced to buy a Wii U and finally see and realize what the Wii U ACTUALLY IS (not a freaking controller) since we have horrible advertising.

Avatar image for endorbr

<< LINK REMOVED >> Can't say consumers will be "forced" to buy anything in this case.
