Why Star Wars Battlefront Doesn't Have a Traditional Single-Player Campaign

"We have to focus."

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Battlefield developer DICE's upcoming shooter Star Wars Battlefront will not have a traditional single-player campaign. Now, the Swedish studio has provided more details on that decision.

Speaking with GameSpot today at Gamescom, senior producer Sigurlina Ingvarsdottir said Battlefront's history is rooted in multiplayer, and this is something DICE wanted to carry forward with the new game.

"As we concepted the game and thought about the legacy of the previous Battlefront games--they didn't really have campaigns, they've always been predominately a multiplayer franchise. That's what we wanted to do," she explained. "We wanted to focus on the multiplayer."

DICE, of course, is well-versed in multiplayer. The studio created Battlefield, and hopes to carry its experience on that franchise forward to Battlefront.

"From the start it had a pure multiplayer focus," Ingvarsdottir added. "It was a lot of the pedigree of the DICE studio, in terms of having delivered great multiplayer in the past, and for us we feel like this is more of a multiplayer franchise. So that's been the focus."

Although Battlefront won't have a traditional single-player campaign, Ingvarsdottir pointed out that the game does have a Missions mode that you can play either alone, or with a friend locally via split-screen or online.

Some fans are not happy about Battlefront not having a single-player campaign. But the game--based on one of the biggest and well-known entertainment franchises on the planet--of course was never going to be able to please everyone.

"People have so many expectations toward Star Wars," Ingvarsdottir said. "It's so vast. There's so many things that you want from it. We have to focus."

Previously, DICE general manager Patrick Bach said the studio never even considered a single-player campaign for Battlefront.

Earlier today during EA's Gamescom briefing, we got a first look at Battlefront's 10v10 dogfighting mode, Squadron Fighter. Battlefront launches on November 17 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Just a few words to mmo crowd out there. My single player dollars will stay in my wallet. And because of it we will soon see the collapse of the gaming industry again. Because in no way are there enough of you mmo players to keep the industry afloat without our single player dollars. So get ready for the collapse cause it is almost here!

I was just about to head out and buy this, I have been looking forward to it for months however just a fluke site I came across mentioned its lack of SP, now I do understand the premise of MP and appreciate the majority of people will be fine with that however did they not stop to think that there is also an awful lot of people who don't play with tons of friends, or complete battles online and who just like to appreciate a good game by themselves, wondering around the gorgeous scenery and taking in all those younger memories, complete and utter fail, I have read extensively on the so called SP missions and they aren't worth as we say in the UK F all lol, they last minutes and have no real story or enjoyable play. So so disappointed what is up with all these developers making MP only games???!

Its lacking a strong story line and a broken/ completely unbalanced multiplayer. Rather you want a sp or mp, you're paying for a star wars game and that's what you expect, star wars. Not space COD cookie cutter

All they had to do was improve upon Battlefront 2... they instead took things away.
Buncha idiots to not do space battles, which was the best part of that game, oh and the SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN THAT YOU COULD PLAY WITH MULTIPLAYER IN THE SAME ROOM.

They should have built a similar type campaign with multiplayer online, WITH SPACE BATTLES.

No way I will buy this and support this kind of slap in the face. Roll the DICE, get burned. **** DICE.

No, can't see buying this if it is basically multiplayer only. Maybe when it goes on sale for 10 bucks. Same with the 2016 Far Cry game set in the stone-age. See no point in a Far Cry game without guns and vehicles.

Fair enough.

My "focus" will be on everything but this game, in that case. My funds are limited, and I'm a single player-centric gamer. I loved the other Battlefronts for their campaigns. But I "have to focus," so for this I'll pass.

Damn, I and my kids were really looking forward to this game...now I'll have to wait for someone else to make a SP SW game, or at best wait till it's $20 or used. Morons....

This is an attempt to separate the single player experience and an Online one completely and offer the other half for additional cost. . They want to "focus" on multiplayer so they don't have to pay for the development of the other half of the game yet charge the full price.

This is a test people!

To see how far gamers will be willing to pay for half a game. Once EA gets away with this... other IP's will follow.

Just look how well the Digital games (Full Digital Titles) and DLC market is doing. Soon, Gamestop wont even exist because the sales volumes of Digital games will not be worth the extra trouble of a "middleman" like a Gamestop.

And for the love of YOUR OWN money... quit buying Digital games! You cant trade those in like you can with tangible game media, even if it's worth just a few dollars at Gamestop! Its worth way more than a DLC.

@silentcorpsecom: I used to make similar exhortations. Alas, my eyes have been opened. The reality is, you and I are a rapidly dwindling minority within a growing mass market. The majority of which doesn't care whether its content is delivered on physical media or digitally, or whether they can collect, keep, trade, or resell their games.

Welcome to the iPhone generation, where people replace something as fundamental as a phone every single year if they can. Let alone something as intangible seeming by comparison (in their minds) as a video game.

I see, "I only buy digital now. It's more convenient," all the time.

I'll be physical only (with rare exceptions) until the bitter end. And the day I can't buy physical games, is the day I quit gaming. But I have to face reality, too. And the reality is...

No one cares.

@anonymous81: I agree with your suspicions about this being a "smart" way of financing your game twice. I have to say on the Digital downloads though, it is just so darn convenient. Got GTA V on pc, and with internet connections today, it took me just over an hour to download the 60GB. I buy more disc based games on consoles though.

@anonymous81: I'm in the same boat as you. I do not download games and content. Often times the big games will have a second release w/ all dlc included on the physical copy. Sure, I buy both simply because I can't wait to play the big game. An example is the soon to released Fallout 4. Direction gaming is going south. Bad times for gamers that began with the original NES.

Yes EA way to distract, offer excuses, and minimalize your dumb decisions.. executive douche bags. Truth is there is zero reason other than GREED as to why you have no single player gameplay. It's that simple. Your fear of piracy is in actuality causing you to make games that even less people want to buy so basically your irrationally stupid fear of "losing money" to piracy is actually making you lose money in the long run... ironic but true. Only some people like always online games... and that number is dropping all the time in the US as it is costlier overall. But you brain dead idiots don't seem to care and why should you... there has been no real economic recovery in America, just a lie perpetuated by corporate shill media... so there aren't nearly as many people that can afford games anymore to begin with... EA = Evil Corp. F EA. I would love to see EA just go belly up so newer companies can emerge and make good games again. Vote with your wallets people. Why support EA when they don't care what you want in a game anymore...EA is too big to succeed now. No bailouts wanted for them. If we wanted another TitanFail we would have asked for one...

Well, if they want to minimise sales, not offering a singleplayer campaign is one way to go about it. I will spend my hard-earned on another game - there will be a number of alternatives to choose from I'm sure.

If you're not going to add a single player story you BETTER make the multiplayer worth 70 euros. Those rich folks at EA forgot the value of money, i swear if this game is not packed with a shitload of features, maps, guns, vehicles i'm not buying any EA game again. And don't even think about releasing a bugfest like BF4 was at launch, or put all the good stuff in DLC.

Why focus on a crappy single player mode thus making a half made multiplayer like BF4 ...id rather they just focus on making a epic multiplayer game....unfortunately this id made by dice who suck up to EA on making half built games thus meaning a terrible bore of a game

With my backlog, I often buy games at a fraction of their original price, since it takes me so long to get to them. With this game only having a fraction of singleplayer content (I'm wholly uninterested in MP) perhaps I'll buy it when it's a fraction of a fraction of its original price, heh. Or not at all, because hopefully there will be better alternatives once I have the time to play it.

Lazy and greedy. I bet its not cheap to include a SP version, and I would have payed the $60 for the full experience but I won't be handing over $60 for a half of a game.

@madracing: The series is built around multiplayer experience. The second game sorta has a campaign but it was merely bot matches with cutscenes. If you expect a satisfying single player experience here, you are looking at the wrong game. Visceral and Bioware's unrevealed SW games should be what you are looking for instead.

I've quite recently discovered a love for multiplayer shooters, though I'm not more than mediocre. My game clocks say I'm 45 hours into Advanced Warfare and around 60 hours into Battlefield 4 multiplayer.

Does that count as half a game? Not in my mind. If the multiplayer is good, I'll take this game for $60 and look forward to my epic Star Wars stories coming from elsewhere.

You simply must put more than 2 years of development into a game like this this, otherwise you're just doing a disservice to its fans. You can't just rush and "reinvent" an established series by cutting important aspects of the game out which you deem unessential.
