Why Sony Is Smart To Skip E3 2020, Even With The PS5 Coming Up

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Sony is backing away from E3.

For the second year in a row, PlayStation is skipping E3. The announcement might have come as a shock to some, given that 2020 is the year of the PlayStation 5. But Sony has good reason to abandon E3 again this year--the show just doesn't make sense for PlayStation right now. The company is, by all signs, better suited to break from the pack and hold its own events. By bypassing E3 this year, Sony does not have to share the limelight with Microsoft, and that works out well for both companies during this all-important year. [Update: E3 2020 will not take place, as the ESA has canceled the event due to the coronavirus.]

There are numerous elements at play here. We've analysed the key news and announcements to (try to) make sense of it all.

Now Playing: PlayStation Skipping E3 Again, But Xbox Will Be There - GS News Update

Why Is Sony Bowing Out?

A Sony spokesperson confirmed that the company conducted a "thorough evaluation" and ultimately decided to skip the show because it didn't align with its own ambitions.

"After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020," Sony said. "We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year."

Sony won't be at E3 this year, but the company said it plans to take part in "hundreds" of consumer events across the world to promote PS4 and PS5 games. The full details of this plan remain to be seen, but you can expect more details to populate in due course.

Behold, the PS5 logo
Behold, the PS5 logo

It Makes Sense

Sony removing itself from E3 again this year might seem shocking at first glance, given the company's overall history with E3, but it's not all that surprising of a decision. The show's profile and popularity is generally understood to be diminishing. E3 remains a major event on the calendar, but for a heavy-hitter like Sony, the event is becoming increasingly irrelevant--and the decision to abandon the show for two years in a row is clear evidence of that. The appeal for E3, at least during a time, was that it provided huge mainstream media attention. That may still be true for some companies and developers, but Sony does not necessarily need to be at E3.

Like Nintendo, Sony is in the enviable position of being able to generate a huge amount of attention from mainstream media and fans alike from holding their own event.

People had an easier time understanding Sony's absence from E3 2019 because that year, the company had relatively fewer high-profile games coming out, and it was also too soon to start talking about the PlayStation 5 in an official capacity.

Some have commented that Sony's absence from E3 this year is especially curious given 2020 is the year of the PlayStation 5 and The Last of Us: Part II. But Sony can generate as much or more attention by conducting its own briefing, on its own terms, whenever it wants.

Separating from the pack gives Sony the opportunity to cut through the noise and blast its signal loudly and to more people than it might have otherwise were it confined to E3. Not only that, but floor space at E3 is not cheap, so this move saves Sony some scratch during a year where budgets are likely tight already with the ramp-up to release for the PlayStation 5.

For the PlayStation 4 reveal in February 2013, Sony rented out the ritzy Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City for a multi-day event that led to international news attention for weeks. While not confirmed, you can expect Sony to do something similar for the PlayStation 5 reveal--creating an event that's dedicated to the system and what's coming next for the PlayStation brand. The PS5 logo reveal at CES 2020 was a start, but Sony is surely planning something much bigger and brighter to showcase the PS5's most exciting new features.

Sony Is Not Alone

Sony isn't the first company to take this approach. Nintendo stopped conducting live, in-person E3 keynote speeches years ago, instead opting to hold pre-recorded Nintendo Direct briefings. Nintendo still holds a Nintendo Direct during E3, but the company has also padded out the Direct schedule with briefings throughout the year focused on different areas of its business. The company successfully dominates the news cycle with this approach, and it's not hard to see why Sony would seek to emulate some of that, especially with the PS5 coming up. In fact, Sony has already begun doing this with its own Nintendo Direct-style "State of Play" briefings.

Microsoft, too, is expanding and differentiating its announcements events. While Microsoft still does attend E3, and it's expected that will continue in 2020, the company has changed things up in recent years. Microsoft now holds its Xbox events at E3 at the nearby Microsoft Theatre instead of the Los Angeles Convention Center itself. Additionally, Xbox recently brought back its XO event, which was held in Mexico in 2018 and London in 2019, both of which featured major news announcements that had space and time to breathe. Microsoft also recently started its Inside Xbox remote video briefings where it is known to make significant reveals.

The landscape of major news events for gaming companies is clearly changing, and Sony is smart to create its own dedicated events for its portfolio of products.

A Window Of Opportunity For Xbox At E3 2020

With Sony bowing out of E3, that leaves room the opportunity for Microsoft to dominate the news cycle in a very important year for the Xbox brand. The next-generation Xbox Series X releases this holiday, with Halo Infinite as a launch title. Even if Sony does come out with some major news about the PlayStation 5 and its games ahead of E3, Microsoft has the chance at E3 this year to demonstrate the power and appeal of this new console and the wider Xbox ecosystem without Sony getting a rebuttal just hours later.

A report from Video Games Chronicle cites unnamed sources who said Microsoft has been planning for its E3 2020 briefing with the understanding that Sony wouldn't be there. Microsoft is said to be scaling up its plans for the show to take advantage of Sony's absence.

The Xbox One got off to a terrible start in 2013 with poor and confusing messaging related to the Xbox One and its digital practices and policies. With Xbox boss Phil Spencer now at the helm (Don Mattrick was the top boss back in 2013), Microsoft has another opportunity to start a new console cycle on the right foot. A strong E3 would go a long way toward instilling consumer confidence in the brand.

Both Microsoft and Sony will be just fine, whether they attend E3 or not. For Sony, the company is coming off the incredibly successful PlayStation 4, which stands as the No. 2 best-selling console in history, only behind the PlayStation 2. There is a huge audience of people eager to buy into what's coming next and enjoy next-gen features like faster loading times and expanded backwards compatibility, among other items.

Microsoft, too, has been riding high of late, in particular thanks to the Xbox Game Pass which already has millions of subscribers and is helping expand the number of types of games people play. The Xbox Series X looks to be a powerhouse of a console, even if you might struggle to fit it into your entertainment center. And with Xbox Game Pass getting folded into xCloud, Microsoft may truly be on the precipice of creating the elusive "Netflix of Gaming." The real money in video games is in software and services, not hardware, and Microsoft is strongly positioned.

What Sony Misses Out On

While it can be stated that E3 as a show is not as popular or important as it once was, Sony's decision to skip the show might cost the company in some regards. Not only will Microsoft have the upper hand as it relates to driving conversation at E3 and leaving the casual fans wondering, 'What about PlayStation?' but Sony won't be able to use the show to respond to Microsoft or to pad out its announcements in a way it is historically known to.

If history is any indication, fans can expect Sony to officially announce and discuss the PlayStation 5 during a dedicated event of its own before E3. For the PS4 reveal, the console was announced in February 2013 and then further detailed during E3 a few months later. This provided the company with the ability to space out its reveals to drive engagement and conversation around the console over the period of many months.

Sony also very smartly capitalized on the Xbox One's poor messaging in 2013 by using its own E3 briefing to take a shot at the Xbox One's used-game policies. It was a very memorable moment for Sony, and it must have embarrassed Microsoft and led some to doubt Microsoft's proposal. Of course, Microsoft would later reverse those policies, but the Xbox One was never able to climb out of the hole it dug itself into at the start of that generation.

Sony stuck it to Microsoft back at E3 2013 over the Xbox One's since-reversed use-game policies
Sony stuck it to Microsoft back at E3 2013 over the Xbox One's since-reversed use-game policies

Sony of course can still hold its own, separate events throughout the year to discuss the PS5 and its new features and games. But even with the scaled-down nature of E3 this year, Sony is giving Microsoft the opportunity to win the event and get all the attention.

Who Runs E3?

E3 is run by the Entertainment Software Association, which is a group that represents the interests of the video game industry in Washington, D.C. The group has not been without its controversies, as the organization most recently failed to protect the personal information of its attendees. Home addresses and other personal details were discovered to be publicly accessible. As a result, some people remarked that their trust in the ESA was eroded. To this date, the ESA has yet to formally and officially respond and address what it will do to ensure it doesn't happen again.

The ESA also generated heat for its defense of microtransaction practices. The company firmly believes in self-regulation instead of political action. The ESA is said to have dispatched lobbyists to try to kill legislative proposals that would have impacted games with microtransactions.

Also of note is an expose from Variety Gaming that shone a light on former CEO Michael Gallagher's reportedly harsh leadership and his favoring of Donald Trump. Gallagher was reportedly forced out of the ESA after membership called for his resignation.

The ESA is now run by president and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis.

What This Means For E3 Going Forward

For its part, the ESA--which organizes E3 every year--released a statement of its own in response to Sony's announcement. The group said E3 2020 aims to be an "exciting, high-energy show" that will include new "experiences." Basically, the company is trying to get the message across that E3 2020, even without Sony, will be the same as you remember--and even bigger and more exciting this year. It remains to be seen if that will be the case, however.

"E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world. E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike," it said. "Exhibitor interest in our new activations is gaining the attention of brands that view E3 as a key opportunity to connect with video game fans worldwide."

E3 as a show appears to be at something of a crossroads, and Sony bowing out again this year is a bad look for a show that bills itself as the biggest and most important gaming event of the year. (For what it's worth, Gamescom regularly dwarfs E3's attendance many times overr). The ESA is clearly failing to inspire Sony to see E3 as a must-attend show, and that isn't a great sign for the event.

The show will go on---E3 2020 isn't screeching to a halt just because Sony won't be there. Microsoft, Nintendo, and others are expected to attend yet again when the show kicks off on June 9, but the event may well again feel muted and lacking. Time will tell.

What This Means For Sony Going Forward

By skipping E3 this year, Sony is taking further control and command of its future. Working inside the confines of a major media event like E3 comes with its own set of limitations, either perceived or otherwise. By branching out and charting its own path, Sony gets to completely control the narrative, and it's not hard to see why this is an attractive proposition for the company, especially during an important console-release year like 2020.

Sony--and Microsoft and Nintendo for that matter--remain dues-paying members of the ESA, so the announcement to back away from E3 does not appear to portend that Sony will soon--if ever--abandon the ESA altogether. The ESA, after all, is hugely important to game companies by the manner in which it acts on the behalf of and defends video game companies on Capitol Hill.

The ESA was instrumental in helping knock down the 2011 violent video game bill that sought to limit the sale of some video games, and the group leads the charge on numerous other important issues that, while not as high-profile as the 2011 case, are still important. This may well be way Sony continues to support the ESA as a member, even if it has chosen to skip the past two E3s.

It is up to the ESA to create a show that is compelling enough in its value offering to make Sony want to come back. Whether or not that will ever happen remains to be seen. For now, Sony will do things its own way, and who could blame them?

It cracks me up when people talk about how many PS2s were sold, because they broke all the time and just about every serious gamer had to buy at LEAST 2 of them just to keep playing their games when the first one broke. Personally I went through 4 of them because I gamed entirely too much and the DVD players in those systems were apparently made with cheap plastic gears.

The interesting thing about the PS4 is that while I bought 2 original PS4s for different rooms, and then later a PS4 Pro for yet another room, ALL 3 of those systems are still working great. To me, this indicates that the PS4 is much more successful than the PS2, but of course, it skews the overall sales numbers.

As for me personally, I'm getting a PS5 and an XBox Series X, maybe not both on launch day, but definitely within the first 6 months of launch. They both look amazing and I'll be able to get at least something for my XBox Series X and PS4 Pro towards each of those systems. There's just no way I'm sitting out The Last of US 2 or Halo Infinite. Together they should cost about the same as a 2080 TI graphics card but it looks to me like both consoles should deliver almost as good 4k gaming experience.

ESA is the antithesis of customer focus. The ESA and ESRB were the driving force behind turning the customer into a consumer. F... the ESA and the immoral corporate publisher CEOs for which they are a front.

Sony missing E3 2 years in a row may not be a really bad thing or the end of gaming as we know it but to try and sell it as a good or smart idea is just sad. There is nothing good about less exposure of your product or brand no matter how much of a diehard fan you are of Sony. That being said, their last E3 presentation was terrible. I'm not talking about the games, they were fine. I'm talking about the presentation. It was a mess. If they no longer want to do E3, stop making excuses for them like it's a brilliant move when the reality is, they are terrible at it the last few years and simply have a hard time affording it. I'll never forget the men with hats and weird instruments and the bizarre idea to have everyone in the audience get up and move to another venue mid show. Stupid stupid ideas. To say Sony can't control the narrative at E3 is just ridiculous. The last E3 they did proves they control the narrative completely.

@bdrtfm: You are talking about last show they did in 2018. The 2017 and 2016 shows, they blasted out only games without any shenanigans. How is it that they can't afford and yet they did the last show in two venues instead of one even if it was terrible? As a consumer i would be more than happy if they cut down their marketing expenses and focused on great games.

@hrv_25: The usual idea is to do both. The fact remains, trying to say that skipping the biggest media blitz in gaming 2 years in a row is a good thing for Sony is just preposterous.

@sonic-boom: Alas, I doubt it's to be. Way too soon to get any announcements for MP4. Odds are more intel on Mario Oddyssy 2 and/or some other Mario game- the franchise is due something.

Also, possibly, maybe, if we're really, really, really, really lucky, some word might be in the next direct about BotW2.

E3 was a big deal back in the day when we all got our information from magazine subscriptions and information wasn't readily available. We now have the internet and streaming and can get our information immediately after it's released.

I don't really see why a company would dedicate all release information and resources when you can build hype quicker and easier by just streaming it directly to consoles and youtube when it's ready.

This could go either way, for example, if Sony has a funerary event and reveals the design, games and price, MS could use that information at E3 against them, and maybe undercut the price. Then it's pretty much game over for Sony this round. if Sony does wait, and say maybe uses the TGS for price that could go either way

The issues that I have with this. It is the fact that Microsoft will have a lead in the media. Being able to get more people on board. With a more unopposed showing. Leaving them with more eyes on them, and less on Sony.

But, at the same time. This is a great idea. Because Sony can see what Microsoft, and maybe Nintendo is doing, and just one-up them. Like what Sony did to Microsoft when the Xbox One and PS4 were launching.

E3 is nothing more but a large space filled up with companies that don't have much to show, people that have been invited so they can cheer when asked (Cough Bethesda and others), and booth babes. Online coverage hasn't gotten any better either with countless influences that have been bought covering the show each year screaming wow in their webcams and mics at every chance they get as if the most awesome shit is being presented. Honestly, E3 has really lost my interest. If MS, Sony and Nintendo all dont decide to show up it will leave only the largest publishers to do the show - imagine that, EA leading the way. Let us not forget last years MS show either, what a cringe-fest that was with over the top voice-over announcers and relatively nothing to show. The whole thing as a package just feels like a bunch of crazy people tossed together in a positive feedback loop.

@i_p_daily: They aren't "for the gamers" because they aren't going to a press event? Despite being increasingly open to the public, E3 is still mainly a press show. But Sony doesn't really need the press all that much anymore, because big news sites like GameSpot aren't nearly as relevant to getting a message out as they used to be. Sony can just hold their own, exclusive event and stream that out themselves. Or go to one of the zillion other, more player focused shows that happen every year. Or both.

Sony is in a similar position as Nintendo; they are bigger than E3 when it comes to attention gathering.

Hell, Nintendo rises more hype through simple rumors about the next Nintendo Direct than what they get from building a giant stage in E3 (or any event for that matter)

Honestly, it's never been "E3" that was worth getting excited about. That is to say, a show floor filled with tons of people and "booth babes" trying to get everyone's attention like career day at the high school gym just flat out never was, and never will be, appealing.

The thing I, and I think thousands more, look forward to every year - is game companies standing in one spot and saying "Look, THIS is what is happening with our console/brand this year" and then just showing you games and hardware and accessories.

Nintendo Directs have managed to do this beautifully. I will always take one of those over the ****show that was the Skyward Sword stage presentation. State of Play and the PlayStation events have been amazing as well.

I can't blame Microsoft for going the other direction and going balls-to-the-wall at E3 though, people have become accustomed to this experience, and it only serves to make Xbox look good to the countless gamers who view E3 as nothing more than a platform for announcing games and consoles, and can't imagine it being any other way just yet.

What I CAN blame them for is the god-awful cringe-fest that is Inside Xbox. Watching Major Nelson and his band of hipsters exemplify the term 'try-hard' is just unbearable. They need to pull it together and come up with a Nintendo Direct or State of Play style presentation before I can take them dropping out of E3 seriously.

Until then though, I am so beyond happy to watch Phil Spencer come out and talk to me about Xbox consoles and games once a year though.

This is actually not a big deal at all. I’ve been playing video games since the first Nintendo and has owned every system except the first Xbox and the WiiU. I own all of the systems now. Enjoy every one of them. The video game industry for consumers is like politics, no matter what Sony does, Xbox super fans will still bash it. Even if they do blow everyone away with their pre-E3 showcase, certain people will still bash it. If Sony announces that the PS5 will be just as/more powerful than the Series X, say that they’re revamping PS Now, reveal that the launch games will be Horizon Zero Damn 2, Bloodborne 2, maybe Spiderman 2, plus say that they are working on God of War sequel, and be the first to announce GTA6, will any one still say they made a bad decision? Just asking bc I plan on owning both systems regardless unless a completely total f—k up by one company!

E3 to me is like the world cup convention of the gaming world recognized by all in the business world and is important, I can understand Sony's decision but honestly 1 year without them at E3 is like the true champions forfeiting to Microsoft xbox without a fight ,xbox don't deserve to be champions on the E3 world stage without beating PlayStation fair and square. Everybody is watching and can see the truth.

Another year of watching Microsoft without Sony is torture and sickening.

@kbblaze: But if everyone agrees that it’s losing steam, does it matter? Unless the PS5 is supremely less powerful than the Series X, is this a bad decision in the long run? I don’t care because I’ll own both eventually. But the games will determine everything if both are on equal footing

@Viper13579:

It is. Ps5 is way less powerful than the XSX. The gap is much larger than what the 1X was compared to the piss poor pro.

The XSX GPU is an AMD semi custom RDNA 2 with 56 CUs where as the ps5 GPU is an RDNA with only 36 CUs.

Not only is the XSX GPU a lot more powerful it’s a lot more efficient to boot.

Your gonna see a much bigger difference in multiplats titles next gen. They are going to be far superior on the new Xbox.

@gamerbum: Not for at least the first two years since the XSX will be held back by catering to the original Xbox One. By then within a year or so I'm sure SONY will be ramping up to release the PS5 Pro... Is MS going to do the same in the following year and release 3 consoles in a 4 year stretch?

@gamerbum: That's interesting. 56 CUs, depending on the memory, can take the XBX up to 12 Teraflops. Couple that with VRS, and 60Hz on 4k is not impossible on the equivalent of Medium to Medium High settings (When compared with PCs).

If what you're saying is true, even with faster memory, the PS5 would cap at around 9.2 Teraflops, which would mean a dramatic decrease in performance.

The equivalent of 1080p Ultra at 120Hz is easy as pie for either one, thou I am pretty sure they will be capped.

The problem is, from a developer's perspective, I have read reports saying that the PS5 is 10-15% more powerful.

I can't wait to take them apart in the lab. Should be fun.

@tlpina: I would not get too excited yet about the PS5's power- According to data recently compiled by Digital Foundry, the next-gen Xbox Series X will be 1.3 times as powerful as the PlayStation 5. This would obviously destroy rumors that the PS5 would be “the world’s most powerful console.”

@spartanx169x: I agree, but again. They're going by patents which are not directly linked to XBX.

I have no preference as I have already set the money aside for both, I just find it interesting that the tech publications say one thing and the developers another.

I can't wait to get my hands on them.

@gamerbum: the PS2 was the weakest console of its time, and was still the absolute winner. To some extend, same goes for PS1, and before that, the Sega Genesis.

The technical aspect of a console has little impact in sales. Series X technology won't be relevant if they don't have a decent game library with worthy exclusives.

@gamerbum:

New info the me. But is just that really gonna make PS4 owners flip and buy a XSX. I doubt it. For someone like me, I’m buying both so it doesn’t matter.

The elephant in the room though is this race or competition will stay close regardless of the power difference because of the first party titles. I’ve loved Xbox since the 360, but besides Halo, Forza, Gears, and recently announced Hellblade are the only known first party games for Microsoft. There has been others announced but they are new IPs. Sony has a stranglehold on first parties between the two. Nintendo is undefeated on them but we aren’t discussing them right now.

Within this next year, it’ll be very interesting. Can’t wait

Wow this writer is such a sony fanboy. I thought journos were supposed to be neutral?? Not surprised though it’s so obvious gamespot is up sony playstations rear end.

I mean just look at the headline.

I don’t care what anyone says to try and spin this in sonys favour (and we all know how good the sony fanboys are at spinning shit) this is in no way good for sony and the fans. To skip the biggest celebration of video games for the year is not a good idea no matter how you look at it. Especially at time when your due to release a new console. They should be doing something special to celebrate 25 years of playstation too. Not good at all. The SDF must be close to world wide revolt. There’s got to be like a billion butthurt sony fanboys out there right now and to think that the playstation 5 is way weaker than the XSX like much more so than what the pro is compared to the 1X.........yikes. This reminds me of the sony of the ps3 days. Oh dear.

Oh well not to worry Xbox are gonna have a belter of a conference. Can’t wait to see what their beast of a console can do.

Hope we get to see Metroid Prime 4. So want that game.

Lol at the damage control! Imagine the headlines and comments if MS said they were pulling out of E3! So it’s smart to leave E3 now gamespot?! 😂😂😂 In my opinion Sony does not want to be shown up by MS! I feel like since they fan the console war flames so much as do their users they should show up and compete! All I’m hearing is excuses...smh

E3 is a relict left over from the pre-internet age. E3 was created so buyers, sellers, and game magazines could go to one place and see what was in store for the coming year. In 2020 E3 makes no real sense for anyone. There is no reason to compete and worry about getting heard above all the noise. Sony can broadcast right to our homes now whenever they wish, there is no need for any middlemen.

If anything E3 needs to pivot and focus on the smaller indies and smaller companies that dont have name recognition yet and still need some help getting the word out. The big names dont need E3 at all.

I agree. Why would Sony want to get wrapped up in a battle with MS at E3? It doesn't make sense. Sony doesn't want the focus to be on which system is better. Look, we all like to argue about which system is better, which has better games, which one sells more, etc. But each company does well and no matter who is 'better', neither Sony, nor MS are going to suffer in the console war. All three of the major companies do very well and any amount of arguing about which one is better is irrelevant. So, why would should Sony care about trying to compete at E3 with MS over console reveals when they can just do their own thing and have their own attention all to themselves? Sony will do their own thing at some point soon and not have to worry about sharing that event with anyone else. It's a smart move and Sony will benefit from it.

Truth is, none of the big companies need E3. E3 is a product of a time when the internet didn't have the massive presence and impact it has in our lives today. It was necessary at a point. Now, we get everything we need from the web. Smaller developers will find much more benefit from E3 as a way to give a big reveal for their games and products. Even Xbox doesn't need E3 and could probably generate just as much traffic for their new system as Sony and Nintendo by holding their own event separate from E3.

@Pierce_Sparrow: console wars do not do anything to advance gaming at all. So you are right in every sense of the word. We have three consoles to choose from each one has it selling points. We choose the console that is the best fit for us that is all. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all good choices at this point. They all play pretty much the same games as exclusives are becoming like dinosaurs extinct. Companies that are selling games want their games on as many consoles as possible these days simply because making games are expensive. These company are chasing profits and they don't make much on exclusive titles.
