Why Need for Speed: Rivals is skipping Wii U

Creative director Craig Sullivan cites weak sales of Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Wii U as reason to skip over Nintendo's latest home console.

Need for Speed: Rivals is not coming to Wii U. According to Ghost Games creative director Craig Sullivan, that's in part due to weak sales of the Wii U version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which was a launch title for the platform in November 2012.

"It didn't really sell that many, in terms of the Wii U market. I would love for it to have, because we put so much effort into that, trust me," Sullivan told The Sixth Axis. "I'd love for it to be way bigger than it was, and the same for the [PlayStation Vita]."

"[Rivals] is going onto new hardware, and you have to work out where you focus your efforts," he added. "The 200 people working on this game are only capable of making so much, and doing so many different versions of the game, so we had to go with where we think the biggest audience will be for the game, and that's where we are."

Ghost Games studio owner Electronic Arts shipped four games for Wii U: Mass Effect 3, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, FIFA 13, and Madden NFL 13. In May, EA confirmed it had no new games in development for the system. By comparison, EA shipped 74 games for the original Wii.

Need for Speed: Rivals launches in November for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

i remember playing need for speed 2 sepcial edition at my neighbours house, so much fun back in the days,

also remember my parents buying me nfs 3 when it was released,

those were so much fun, but it seems as the graphics advanced, the level of fun decreased,

still want to check this game out, but i think i'd prefer forza5

firstly, mass effect 3 is a sequel, so only people interested in it would be people who have played previous mass effect games, therefor it means they would have a pc, or xbox 360 or ps3. and since mass effect 3 on wii u was released after other consoles, it was never given a chance.

same thing for most wanted, it was released 6 months ago on other consoles, if you werent interested in it when it was first released why would you be interested in it for the wii u??

i'd like to see 3rd party developers release games on the wii u at the same time as other consoles, giving it a fair chance,

I personally think in my opinion that EA should make a reboot the Need For Speed Franchise because the games are getting boring. Every new NFS game is just a new setting and some new cars thats it.They should make a game a open world game like The Crew for example

First of all the whole reason EA is snubbing Nintendo is because Nintendo didn't want EA's crummy Origin system on the WiiU and EA acted like a bunch of spoiled kids who couldn't get their way (remember how buddy buddy they were with MS pre 180?)

Secondly I love how we hate on EA unless it's about them snubbing Nintendo again, then we're all on their side.

Also even if this was on the WiiU, would any of you have bought it anyway? Are any of you going to buy Arkham Orgins, Watch Dogs, ACIV on the WiiU? Nah you'd rather spend $400-$500 for a slightly better looking version. So why is this a surprise to anyone?

I agree and disagree with his comment. I agree the sales of the system and game are weak. I disagree because NFS most wanted was a port of a 4 month old game. Also, by that time the game was already on sale. It's a little of an unfair comparison.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They released Fifa 13 without the Ultimate team which is a very popular feature and then had the audacity to charge people full price for a gimped version of the game. They released Mass Effect 3 without Mass Effect 1 or 2 being thrown into the mix, so if anyone owning a Wii U had never played Mass Effect 1 and 2, why would they play the third one? Also they released Most Wanted U four months after its original release on other platforms and then wonder why their games never sold on the Wii U.

You can't port an old game and expect it to sell like hot cakes. If they only release games on popular platforms then why isn't there a 3DS release?

It was a launch game. Obviously alot more people own a wii u now and certainly more still over the holidays. Therefore more copies of games would be sold. It seems like quite a simple logic to me. Don't know why some developers have such a hard time understanding it.

I don't think Wii U owners bought the console to play games like Need For Speed. For the Wii U, I'm only interested in the exclusive Nintendo Mario, Zelda etc. titles. Although, they were never enough to make the Wii U a worthwhile purchase.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not sure it's a case of Wii U owners only wanting to play Nintendo exclusives. It's just the Wii U hasn't had the software support it has desperately needed right from the start, which is almost entirely because of Nintendo's relationship with its third party publishers. Also, a lot of Wii U owners probably already own a PS3 or 360, so would probably just continue to play multi-platform titles on one of those.

I think Nintendo should get out of hardware development (maybe apart from handhelds), just like Sega did, and start releasing some of its games on other platforms. I'm sure a Mario game would be hugely popular if it was released across the major platforms, and would probably generate more revenue than a Wii U version.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> When was the last time Nintendo had good 3rd party support? Besides Capcom on Gamecube, the last I remember is the SNES days. Everyone deserted them after that because of N64's cartridges. Then they never recovered from it. People tried to support the Wii when it sold gangbusters, but their games weren't selling. Nintendo was cannibalizing their software sales. And then they pretty much gave up on Nintendo.

As for going third party. They will sell more software doing that, but Nitnendo has too much pride (and money) to stop making hardware.

@Lee Bailey ever heard of gyroscopic controls, i doubt so. WiiU has those so technically WiiU is more capable to give better racing experience as compared to ps3 and x360.

Hmm... I understand their decision (which is based on NFS: Most Wanted's sales) but at the same time I think this is a bad one. The reason I say that is because the Wii U is finally starting to come out of it's sales slump. Sales for the console have risen substantially over the past few weeks and there is still a steady stream of great games for the console coming throughout the rest of the Fall and Holiday Season which I think will sustain it's momentum. This is probably the best timing for a game like NFS: Rivals to actually flourish on the Wii U.

But being under EA's publishing umbrella can't be helping things either. EA has already said they are not currently working on any games for the Wii U and I think this is a trend we'll continue to see from them (regardless how good or bad the Wii U does in sales). EA simply wants nothing to do with that console.

I wish Nintendo had a console with normal 3rd party support. I'd make it my main console if so.

<< LINK REMOVED >> EA s shit, they want to grab all the money with online gaming and WiiU has smaller online community as compared with ps3 and x360.. but yeah wiiu will never have more 3rd party support as much as ps3 and x360 did because Nintendo is more popular for first party games.

Third-party developers: "We wont support Wii U until sales pick up."

Nintendo: "Wii U sales will pick up once games get released for it."

It's the kind of situation that you never expected to find Nintendo in. Time will tell if they'll be able to figure it out...

Really the only NFS I'd be interested in playing now would be if they went back to the Underground series. Now THAT I loved the hell out of.
