Why Borderlands skipped Wii U

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says developer has yet to find "natural, obvious" feature that would take advantage of system.

Gearbox Software is supporting Wii U with its upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, said to be the best-looking version of the game. However, that is the only Gearbox game or franchise in development for Nintendo's new system.

No Caption Provided

Fans may be wondering why Gearbox is not planning to bring its popular Borderlands franchise to the Wii U. According to CEO Randy Pitchford, it's due to Gearbox not having yet found a compelling way to use the system.

“We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands, and the reason why there’s not is because we couldn’t think of a 'natural, obvious OMG-I-want-that-for-what the-Wii-U-brings-to-the-table feature," Pitchford told GamesMaster (via Nintendo Everything).

On the other hand, bringing Aliens: Colonial Marines to the Wii U was an easy decision for Pitchford.

“But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie," he said.

Borderlands is not the only established series that has elected to skip the Wii U. Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6 and Metro: Last Light will not appear on the console. Additionally, it is not clear if Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 will ship for the system.

Well at least they just didn't put a map or a weapons selection screen on the Wii U tablet Gamepad and call it a day.

But they could still release a port that uses just the Wii U pro controllers.

@Megavideogamer actually i would mind just the map and weapon selection screens because i think I'm in those screens more than the actual game when I play BL2... i've even went as far as create an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all my weapons #dontjudgeme

@GenoBaby @Megavideogamer

Exactly what I was thinking. I would love to have the map and inventory screens on the handheld screen. It would be easier to access them and switch things around without actually leaving the game. The map especially would be useful when driving around. Not it's not an OMFG game changer but it doesn't have to be that to be helpful and important.

Just release the damn game and stop trying to turn everything into a gimmick...the Wii U is going to be ruined.

@TheMudora See a couple comments below by Epictacosam. It's not about "gimmicks" it's about giving users a reason to wait for a buy a WiiU version instead of the existing platforms. So far, they can't find that reason.

It's pretty simple already. If you want the best, play on a PC. If you want pretty good, play on Xbox. If you want sore over-extended thumbs, play on PS3. Something for everybody!

@Tekcor @TheMudora Except the thing about the PS3, you're right. I don't know if you have crazy weird hands but a PS controller is a hundred times more comfortable than the 360. So I guess it's just subjective. You were speaking facts until the last couple of sentences.

@Joshua2222 Well I've never even held an Xbox controller, so I can't compare it to the dualshock. I do own a PS2 and always found the joysticks in a totally awkward and far away position. But I'll admit I've never felt fatigued by it, though being a PC gamer, I've never played more than a couple hours at a time on the PS2.

So long story short, I'm willing to be wrong.

you just said that in the other article rofl. atleast put some heart into trolling ;)

btw being able to play on the tablet is a bonus not a forced feature. If someone else is using your tv then you can move the game down to the gamepad without losing any progress.

people here on Gamespot arent the brightest bulbs in the pack. Let me explain what Randy Pitchford was saying. To port it to the Wii U would be expensive and take away resources from Gearbox. This game has been released for several months before the Wii Us debut to stores. If they were working on a port then they'd need a "gimmick" as some people would like to call it, or something that would make you choosed this over your older systems. It likely wasnt going to make back thier initial investment because the instal base is relatively low (Xbox and ps3 have had 6 and 7 years to get where they are). They need something to make this better or stand out since its wouldve came out a few months after.

@Epictacosam Thank you sir! I could not have said it better myself. I actually shocked at the immature crowd that has become of the gamespot readers. Where are the real gamers? And if people want to know what a real gamer is? These are people who enjoy all consoles and do go around being complete jackasses by saying one console is better than the other.

OMFG, the console has been out for a damn week. That's it. The Xbox performed miserably out of the gate as well, but built up momentum. We don't know what NEW games will come to the system, what NEW IP will do with it, or how players will react to this NEW stuff.

From a business perspective, porting an already finished game to a console in its infancy doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The market is small, the cost is large, and most people who would want the game have an avenue to obtain it. Developing a new game, OTOH, can cost far less as development can happen in parallel.

Look, we don't know if the WiiU will be a success or not. I know I didn't buy one because the launch lineup isn't good enough. I will probably buy one at some point though. But this trend of dumping on the ONLY company bringing ANY innovation to the industry is getting real old, real fast. The last innovation we got out of Sony or Microsoft was Sony putting two analog sticks on a controller. That was a big deal, seriously, but c'mon guys, what else ya got?

when playing coop, you can't pause the game when goin through inventory. It can be a quick death to have to swap out weapons. Using the gamepad to quickly and effectively equip different items and still be able to see what's goin on/ shoot WOULD be a great use for the game pad.

The game was not designed to utilize a tablet... so to say there's no great feature that takes advantage of it, well, yeah. It wasn't designed to do so. You'd have to rewrite the game's design to adapt the touchpad to be used for anything outside of inventory. The game should be released for the Wii U simply because it's a good system that people will want to play the game on, and the extra added ability to manage inventory on the pad could be a nice addition. Seems simple enough to me.

Why is it that all of the articles from Gamespot regarding the Wii U have very negative overtones? What's the deal? Go to metacritic, and you'll see that gamespot has rated almost all the WIi U games lower than every other review site. Why is this??? What's the deal?

@kpolicoff dude... there's, like, this total conspiracy to bring down the wii U for no reason whatsoever. Either that, or it's a gimmicky outdated console with nothing but rehashed games to back it.

Eddie Makuch is on the roll with all the anit-Wii u articles today. Can you just come out and admit that you just don't like nintendo already? It's like your digging for anything or anyone out there that will validate this claim whether its a washed up game designer or a company thats not putting one of their games that came out a month ago on to the new console (even though one of their most anticipated games is coming to the wii and is the best version). Maybe you are doing this just to start a flame war, or just catering to the other Nintendo haters on this site. I swear MS or Sony never gets as much heat on here as much as Nintendo.

@slyfox_28 Because Nintendo claims that their consoles are going to change the way we look at games. They don't and they haven't. The Wii is seriously, while having some amazing titles, one of the worst home consoles ever made. A veritable handful of good titles. Largest squandering of an opportunity to try something new ever.

@EbenOlemaun It's only been a week for the wii U. Can we at least give it 6 months or something before passing judgement? As far as the wii is concerned, apparently MS thought it was the right way to go since now their pushing Kinect down our throats. So what does that say about MS? I don't think neither Nintendo or MS are trying to change the way we look at games with just a controller, maybe just an alternative to how we play but I'm not going to knock someone for trying something new.

It would be gnarly to have your skills, badass, and weapons menus, (or map) on the handheld unit. I may never get the new Nintendo (...right away) but the applications are definitely there to enhance a gaming experience where Sony or Microsoft units cannot take games.

Wii u needs gimmicks only. No reason to have RE6, Borderlands, DS3, etc on wii u. People will still buy the wii u just for the dancing and fitness games. Let the other platforms have the good games. Simple.

@Benficafan_101 @Ultra_Taco Why would they come out and say that then if it wasn't true? I guess they could out-right lie about it just to make the sell, but end the people (whether your average gamer or game reviewers) will research and detemine the truth about it. In other words, it's in Gearbox's best interest not to put out a statement like that if its not true. The do have a reputation to protect and I hold them to their words.

Heres the pattern Im noticing, a gamespot writer makes a Wii-U article of why this game ISNT on it and why THAT game isnt on it. I must say Ive never seen this done on any other system because most reasonable people know that it takes time for cross platform games to goto newer systems....so I dont see the reason for these topics unless there just isnt any news going on right now.....

@IanNottinghamX That's because it's one of the first systems to have a bunch of re-released for it like this so early and so many at once. so when a big title isn't coming to Wii U it makes sense to say something about it.

What if it was a re-released game that could obviously benefit from the tablet, but wasn't released for Wii U? Would you still say that?

It's news because it's not just a matter of a game coming from one platform to another, it's a matter of developers seeing no use for the Wii U's gimmick controller. Like with the Wii, Nintendo's need to stand out and "innovate" is causing developers to stay away.

@WhiteStormy Im tired of people who throw the word Gimmick around and arent using it in its actual context, they just throw it around cause they just heard someone say gimmick. The word Gimmick implies a cheap attempt at something...In Nintendos case they were massively successful with the Wii so their efforts were not gimmick because gaming DOES need to constantly change or things will get stale...Im sick of Call of duty and games like that cause they will lead to the next big fall of gaming.

Now I have no real Idea whats on Nintendos mind with the WiiU creatively so I cant bash them before seeing their vision..the WiiU is selling well so I cant really call that system Gimmick either especially when they have a track record of making games with controls that actually utilize the features of their controllers.

I play Xbox and Playstation also but dont expect Microsoft or Sony to innovate anything... thats just not what they do, they are good at deriving from what they see done and adding something new to it. thats about it...

I personally got the Wii U just for the first party titles. That has always been Nintendo's bread and butter. And personally, that is enough for me. I made fun of the Wii when it first release but got one in college and I think me and my roommates spent more time on that than our PS3s and 360s. Bring on the next Mario party so we can get the drinking games going again.
