Why Borderlands skipped Wii U

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says developer has yet to find "natural, obvious" feature that would take advantage of system.

Gearbox Software is supporting Wii U with its upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, said to be the best-looking version of the game. However, that is the only Gearbox game or franchise in development for Nintendo's new system.

Fans may be wondering why Gearbox is not planning to bring its popular Borderlands franchise to the Wii U. According to CEO Randy Pitchford, it's due to Gearbox not having yet found a compelling way to use the system.

“We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands, and the reason why there’s not is because we couldn’t think of a 'natural, obvious OMG-I-want-that-for-what the-Wii-U-brings-to-the-table feature," Pitchford told GamesMaster (via Nintendo Everything).

On the other hand, bringing Aliens: Colonial Marines to the Wii U was an easy decision for Pitchford.

“But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie," he said.

Borderlands is not the only established series that has elected to skip the Wii U. Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6 and Metro: Last Light will not appear on the console. Additionally, it is not clear if Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 will ship for the system.

If that is really Pitchford's excuse for not bringing Borderlands 2 to Wii U, what is the 'natural, obvious OMG-I-want-that-for-what-the-brings-to-the-table feature' that allowed Gearbox to find no problem releasing it on every other major platform other than Wii U? That's like saying you won't bring a portable game to 3DS because you don't know how to incorporate the microphone into gameplay.

@hadlee73 I think it has more to do with the respective consoles' user-base. The WiiU simply doesn't have a large enough audience (yet) to make porting the game as-is to this system financially viable. This is especially the case when you consider the fact that many of the people who own a WiiU already own a copy of Borderlands 2 for another system, thus decreasing the amount of potential customers even further. So unless Gearbox was able to make a new version of the game that greatly surpassed the existing version of the game with some sort of awesome feature unique to the WiiU, there's little to compel would-be consumers to buy the game again and therefore little reason to spend company resources into creating the port. It's all about the 'potential income' vs 'resource expenditure' ratio.

@hadlee73 Well, for the Xbox360, the obvious advantage is in its (but not limited to) easier to port codes and robust online community. For PS3, the nVidia chip probably had something to do with it. Borderlands was originally made with those two console controllers in mind so I think it was "natural" in that sense when it comes to BL2. I am not sure I agree with Pitchford, but it looks like the Wii U controller might give me cramps playing a shooter when used for a long duration of time. *shrug*

@tracerhank @hadlee73 It's called a Pro controller, they don't need to use the tablet. Also, and I don't mean to be a jerk, but just because it's easier to port a game to a console, or the fact that it includes a chipset, doesn't mean it's a reason to port it to that platform, online community is a decent reason, but that's also on PC.

@tracerhank @hadlee73 True, it wouldn't take advantage of the controller, but special features or controllers isn't the reason for the 360 or PS3 versions. My point was that it wasn't because of a lack of a use for the Wii U controller that they didn't port, as you point out yourself it's mostly an install base and development timing issue. I'm just saying their reason, the controller, isn't really the reason, if the Wii U had a larger base they probably would have made it, whether it used the controller or not. No one makes a game for a system only because they can use a specific feature of it, or because of chipsets. They make the games because they can make a good game and there are a lot of customers. Install base is the deciding factor, and I understand that they didn't make it because they aren't sure about the console yet, it's just that no one makes a game for a controller or because it's easy to port, that's just a perk. Fan base is the deciding factor.

@Trenchman @hadlee73 If it doesn't take advantage of Wii controller, then what's to look forward to when porting a game over? The 400k user base? Granted, it's 400k and counting. But if a marketing department of a publisher looks at the percentage of a 3rd party game on the Wii in the past, it'll see that it's not worth the development cost to only tap into the small percentage of hardcore gamers available for a system that is clearly marketed at casual gaming crowd.

To spell it out for you: BL1 was developed for the consoles based on the % of hardcore gamers on PS3 and 360 --> User base establishment --> fanbase --> BL2 developed to take advantage PC power --> port to PS3 and 360 because 1. fan base and 2. easy port, dedicated online community and similar graphic engine in chips.

Everyone knows PC has a big online community. But it's much diluted and hard to track due to PC's multi-purpose. Accessing Nintendo's online community through a console is a big question mark. I know you have faith, but marketing requires more than that.

Also, I don't mean to be a jerk, but if you're gonna discredit any of my speculated "reasons", you should state your explanation so it's constructive, and not just be because you didn't like the reasons.

Who cares about the Wii U. Its just another gimmick with Nintendo releasing the same games over and over again. I'm glad they didn't bring it to the Wii U. More developers should boycott the pile of door stop crap. Nintendo needs to learn that people want GAMES, not GIMMICKS. No, not Mario 201111987938753.

@DarthLod

You people honestly need to have your brains checked. Like take the guy below me for instance, perfect example!

First of all a gimmick is something that serves little to no purpose and is designed to attract attention. The gamepad screen has actually proven USEFUL!It not only helps games like MMO's and RTS games but even something as simple as having map and inventory always accesible without having to pause the game is beneficial. Just look at the DS! If it was a gimmick it wouldn't have sold at all and would have got no games!

You know what a gimmick is? The handle on the Gamecube and those tiny discs were gimmicks. Hell you could argue that Kinect is a gimmick! The point is the word gimmick is being used in the wrong way.

Also wanting a company to fail? Seriously? "Nintendo needs to learn that people want GAMES?" Yeah they already know that, thats why they hold the Top 1,2 & 3 spots for best rated games of all time.

@Vickman178 @DarthLod Those tiny GC disks wernt a gimmick. DVD licensing fees were a lot more expensive than this media. You didnt like the GC handle? The wii u controller is a gimmick. Interesting but I dont really need a screen on my controller.

Game makers will be focusing more on true next gen systems. Wii U is not next gen. It is very comparable to current gen which is seven years old. Wii U is an after thought. Nothing more.

so by saying the Wii U is crap and comparing it to current gen consoles, you're saying that the PS3 and Xbox 360 is crap as well

@TheOnlyConan So tell us what exactly is truly next gen? I take it you are thinking graphical horse power, because if that is the case my PC will piss all over whatever the next gen comes out with? And I'm sure other PC gamers who have advanced specs would agree

A top-end gaming PC costs more than a console too. Even if you build it yourself, it's still going to easily cost twice as much as a console.

@ElfShotTheFood @sinn_exit Actually when they new consoles from Sony and Microsoft do come out it will have hardware they is at least 3 years behind current gen PC hardware so, in order to play the next gen consoles you will not need a top-end gaming PC but more of a middle class PC. I can build a PC for $700 that will most likely still be better than the next gen consoles. How much do you reckon a new console from Sony and Microsoft will cost? Do you remember the price when the PS3 was launched? It was close to a grand.

People need to understand that consoles will not be able to catch up to PCs. I am sure that they can build a console to match the current PC hardware but those console prices will be through the roof cause they have the logo of Playstation and Xbox.

@sinn_exit @TheOnlyConan Goodness! You have a PC that can outperform consoles? My word! My heart just skipped a beat with this new found knowledge. I am shocked and amazed that this is even technologically possible. I am so jealous. I guess the fact that I enjoy games on my Atari 2600 must be inferior to the fun you are having on your Lamborghini computer. Geez Louise, now I finally know why my 1981 Magnavox television displays such pixelated graphics with the hit games Combat, and Kaboom. Heavens to Betsy, I better get with the program. I thought I had to buy a console to enjoy top notch, state-of-the-art entertainment of the video-computer-system entertainment variety. You PC gamers got it goin' on! Word!

@jambubby74 @TheOnlyConan Your sarcasm is noted but at the end of the day I wasn't trying to say that the next gen consoles are obsolete. In reaction to TheOnlyConan's statement he saying that the Wii U is an after thought. It's likely he prefer consoles to have raw OTT graphical horse power as opposed to having new and exiting ways to enjoy games. I love my consoles as much as the next gamer and my pc too.

@TrueGB @sinn_exit @TheOnlyConan He has a point. If what you think NEXT GEN truly is, amounts to better specs more computing power stronger processing power more ram, prettier graphics.. Well then You could have that right now why wait for M$ and Sony to pre-build a non upgradeable machine for you when you can build your own, that will likely be more capable for what I would assume will be a comparable price to what the new M$ and Sony consoles will cost. Plus it will be upgradeable you wont have to wait 7 years for an advancement and you can still play the games with a xbox controller, or a playstation controller. heck you even have more options for other third party controllers.

until developers find a way to port perfectly their games to wii u they shouldnt do it, so far i heard ALL the ports from xbox/ps3 on wii u have serious framerate issues, and im sure is not because the console isnt powerful enough, but because of developers eithe being lazy or that they still dont know exactly the capabilites of the wii u and just port with all the technical flaws for a quick cash

@Anema1986 The only games that have frame rate issues are Batman and Mass Effect but they were both ported by new developers.

Batman is just a terrible port though and not the actual systems fault, I mean sometimes textures don't even load. Thats obviously because of bad programming.

I've got Darksiders 2 and they managed to slightly improve the draw distance of the textures so thats all cool. :)

Hardware to me should be transparent to the gaming experience. I don't really care if I play a game on an Xbox 360 or PS3 or WiiU. The only time that hardware makes a difference is when technology takes a huge leap forward and the hardware provides a means to experience it. What really matters is if there will be games for the WiiU that are worth playing and / or owning the system. I hope the WiiU is successful and tries to get more of the hardcore gamer crowd, instead of the family / under 14 crowd. I don't want to play Mario and Zelda, so I hope Nintendo try to branch out some.

Sony & MS: *looks away from the work bench working on the PS4 and next Xbox, then looks at the reporter with a straight face* Nintendo finally joined the current generation? Pfft, We'll have new tech out within 2 years, they'll still be playing catch up and we'll be on the next lap of the race, it's no longer fair competition for Nintendo at this point.
