Why Borderlands skipped Wii U

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says developer has yet to find "natural, obvious" feature that would take advantage of system.

Gearbox Software is supporting Wii U with its upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, said to be the best-looking version of the game. However, that is the only Gearbox game or franchise in development for Nintendo's new system.

No Caption Provided

Fans may be wondering why Gearbox is not planning to bring its popular Borderlands franchise to the Wii U. According to CEO Randy Pitchford, it's due to Gearbox not having yet found a compelling way to use the system.

“We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands, and the reason why there’s not is because we couldn’t think of a 'natural, obvious OMG-I-want-that-for-what the-Wii-U-brings-to-the-table feature," Pitchford told GamesMaster (via Nintendo Everything).

On the other hand, bringing Aliens: Colonial Marines to the Wii U was an easy decision for Pitchford.

“But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie," he said.

Borderlands is not the only established series that has elected to skip the Wii U. Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6 and Metro: Last Light will not appear on the console. Additionally, it is not clear if Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 will ship for the system.

To tell you the truth, the only Wii U feature that would be perfect for BL is if you had the inventory/skill tree system on the Gamepad. Anything else would be a wild card.

it would be cool to check the gunstats on the gamepad screen. You could check your hole inventory using the tablet. you point at a gun in the ground and voila, the screen on the gamepad shows you the stats and compares it to the gun you're currently holding.

Makes sense. The tablet is a really cool peripheral, but doesn't really bring anything unique to the table for this particular series.

If you play Borderlands 2 you should probably play on the PC with PhysX maxed.

The graphical improvement is impressive. Great game anyway with solid gameplay single and co-op and funny writing. And loot!

Don't buy a Wii U to play Borderlands 1 or 2 if you could just play it on the similarly powerful and cheaper 360 or PS3.

@KBFloYd Gotta love the one comment that says "Game A sucks" and has no developed thought, argument and/or premise for saying so... sorry, but Borderlands is an amazing series with millions of fans and millions sold.

As for Borderlands 2, its GOTY material and a prime example of what a sequel should strive for and be.

I don't think it sux but the graphic artstyle is $h!T I wish Gearbox had left it looking the way they had it originally it looked alot better the Cel-shading just looks tacky and cheap. But the gameplay is atleast solid and in the end thats all that matters.

@Marky360 @KBFloYd To each his own, but if they left it how it originally was either you or someone else would say, "This looks like Fallout, I wish they'd do something creative!" lol

That being said, the art design of Borderlands, I think, looks superb. It has great animation, style and a charm all its own. Then again, stylized graphics > realistic graphics, in my book.

@Marky360 @KBFloYd everyone has different tastes and I actually like the way borderlands 1 and 2 looks. It is a subjective matter where there is no right or wrong answer.

@KBFloYd Borderlands was quite boring playing solo but Borderlands 2 is actually quite good even on solo and I like the story and the characters better in B2.

I think the reason these developers are skipping releasing some prominent titles on the Wii U is more along the lines of the Wii U being a largely 'untested' system on the gaming market and they don't want to waste the time, energy and resources to build the game for the sytem without knowing for relative certainty they're going to get a good return on their investment. I think it's just that simple.

@emptycow @wcwj26 Wow! This just made me laugh, thank you good sir. But, you are a complete idiot. Making speculations like that without facts. Noone, and I mean no one know the full specs of the Wii U cpu and gpu. If, they can port current games like BLOP2 to Wii U and still maintain the graphics and close enough fps; than can you imagine what they can do if produced a game from the ground up on the Wii U after getting themselves familiar with the hardware. But, of course, that is also speculation of my behalf, though, at least I am not speaking from my ass like you.

@Draggonwolf @emptycow Why do some people insist on knowing the Wii U's hardware spec when it hasn't been revealed? It's getting a bit boring really! I'll stake MY LIFE that the difference between Wii U and next gen M$ and PS will be the same as 360 and PS3!

No one is pointing a gun to their heads and saying 'You must use motion/touch controls!!!'.

This is some BS excuse.

“But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie," he said. -> Implying Move, Kinect and Wii (not Wii U) didn't ALREADY have motion controls.

Sounds like he doesn't even knows why they made Aliens for Wii U.

@jedidave @Bahamut_10th Yes, he is talking about a motion sensor like the movies. They had a handheld motion sensor that showed a top down view of movement in the area, the idea was to give the player the sense of using the motion controller themselves.

That said, I agree with the OP that this is a BS excuse, at least I'm hoping it is, but I'm not sure why they wouldn't just tell the truth about the matter if it isn't the case.

@Bahamut_10th I think he means that the tablet shows you the game, and you can look around with the tablet, making you feel like your in the movie. verse the dumb motion controlls that make you sit in front of the tv and not move in circles but simpley move your wrist to the right or left and left the screen on the tv turn.

I can appreciate this. They won't add a game on this system if they cannot make it work. They will add a game to the system when they can make it work.

Hear that, Ubisoft? That's how it's done.

@silversix_ Or they could just use the Pro controller and ignore the tablet controller. See, this is the problem I have with people attacking the controller, it comes with a regular style controller, so there's no need to use it. Now, hopefully developers will realize that fact.

@Trenchman @silversix_ The tablet controller has all the buttons the pro or even 360 and PS3 controllers have, just that it has the screen in the middle. People make too big of a deal over it.

I dont know... being able to bring up the games map on the controller might be kind of nice, and maybe having your weapons displayed on the controller so all you have to do is tap one to switch instead of scrolling through would be nice too. I could see some ways the game could benifit from being on the WiiU. That said the only reason I would ever consider buying one is maybe in a year or two when the price has dropped and there is a new zelda for it that will have current gen graphics and actual controls.

I don't think hardcore gamers treated Nintendo as a gimmick brand until the publishers started releasing games that were gimmicky, which offends those of us with the capabilities to play games with more complicated coordination. But gimmicky games came from market research, and because the Wii and Wii U attracts casual gamers who often wanted the systems with reasoning other than rich gaming experience (every non-gamer I met thought they can use the Wii as a replacement to proper weight-loss exercise routine), the market creates a bad cycle.

On a side note: I know Wii sold as many units as there are guns in Borderlands. But outside of the hardcore gamer population, which I would estimate has been about the same for years, the majority of those sold units are sitting there collecting dust. People who weren't coordinated to play deep games went back to not playing games, and People who wanted to lose weight playing Wii sport went back to sitting and eating.

Yes people they arent porting it to another system to save money......so what? Would you spend extra money to have to tweak the workings of a game to re-release it onto a system that doesnt confer any type of benefit to the port? Yes its a business so they arent gonna waste money on something that isnt necessarily going to make them money. Wii U missed the launch date for the game. Sad day. If you were planning on getting a Wii U to play a game that was already released on another systems, VERY sad day for you.

How about not constant freezing at the main menu, like what happens when I try and play it for the Xbox 360? That would be a great addition to the Wii U version!

They do not want to spend the resources to make a game that will not sell very many copies. Cause honestly if you wanted Borderlands, you already own it on the other systems, and you won't buy a second copy for the Wii U. If you don't own a PS3 or 360 but you got a Wii U, you are probably not old enough to even know about Borderlands, or purchase it. There is no reason for these companies to waste money to not make money.

@exedeath Actually, having some good games on a newly released system, even if they are on other systems, could give people a reason to justify the purchase of a console they want anyway. They could potentially increase sales by releasing the game on a newly released console. Also, just because you want the game doesn't mean you already have it, numerous reasons can keep you from buying a game at release, lack of time, other games to finish, interest in a game but not enough to buy it at release. I'm not saying they should have made the game, but it could have been easily profitable.

@exedeath What if you are old enough to know about Borderlands but do not have a Ps3 or a 360 cause you have been gaming on a PC? So, from what I can understand, is that if you do not have a ps3 or a xbox than you are a kid who obviously hasn't played borderlands? Not even on a PC? What if you played it on the PC but haven't had the chance to buy borderlands 2 but wouldn't mind playing it on the Wii U (which you have bought obviously for some reason) if it comes to the new console?

I cannot believe 2 people actually liked this comment coming from someone who is a kid themselves with this kind of comment.

Honestly, I haven't played a game on the Wii U. It is not something that is immediately obvious to me what the benefit would be. I personally think the XBox and PS3 graphics are fine, so I am pretty sure that I wouldn't have any problems with the Wii U graphics either. I just don't get the GamePad without having tried it. I know I will at some point. The first Wii was immediately obvious what the benefits were. This time they may be more hidden, or just not there at all. I am glad some people enjoy it though. Honestly, some people have enjoyed every game system that has ever been released. Good luck this time Nintendo.
