Why Borderlands skipped Wii U

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford says developer has yet to find "natural, obvious" feature that would take advantage of system.

Gearbox Software is supporting Wii U with its upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, said to be the best-looking version of the game. However, that is the only Gearbox game or franchise in development for Nintendo's new system.

No Caption Provided

Fans may be wondering why Gearbox is not planning to bring its popular Borderlands franchise to the Wii U. According to CEO Randy Pitchford, it's due to Gearbox not having yet found a compelling way to use the system.

“We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands, and the reason why there’s not is because we couldn’t think of a 'natural, obvious OMG-I-want-that-for-what the-Wii-U-brings-to-the-table feature," Pitchford told GamesMaster (via Nintendo Everything).

On the other hand, bringing Aliens: Colonial Marines to the Wii U was an easy decision for Pitchford.

“But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was ‘Holy sh*t, I can have a motion controller in my hands!’ When it’s there in my lap it feels like I’m part of the movie," he said.

Borderlands is not the only established series that has elected to skip the Wii U. Dead Space 3, Resident Evil 6 and Metro: Last Light will not appear on the console. Additionally, it is not clear if Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3 will ship for the system.

The main reason is that game has been out for some time and people who wanted to play it has already bought it. making a game for a totally new game console requires man hours and costs huge chunks of money which should rather be used for developing new games for new console.

Even if they make it for WIIU, I am wondering how many people will buy it. IMO not enough to justify the development cost. From business standpoint that is a perfect decision and I dont blame them.

Regarding WIIU, I dont, think it has failed or anything but I also wont call it a next gen. I love to play Zelda & Mario but I am sorry that alone wont entice me to shell so much money on a new console when I already have PS3 and PC. Had to sell my WII because I hardly played games on it.

There is no point in making Borderlands for a Wii U. Its been perfected on the xbox 360 and Ps3.. We don't need To add any extra "cool for 10 minutes" Features.

The funny thing about this is that they call Wii U as a next gen console. Wii U does the same shit as PS3, how can it be next gen? Nintendo failed hard.

Don't be ignorant. Let it play out and then run your mouth. I agree, it sucks, but it does more than our current gen. consoles, in terms of innovation with controls. It's new. Run your mouth next Xmas.

@sam628 and you said you are tired of playing the same old games over and over then you jump on to Nintendo which makes the same games over and over and over hell they have been making mario and zelda games since the NES which was released over 20 years ago

First....most of the people that wanted Borderlands already got it elsewhere...

Second...the best idea I saw in the comments was to have menus and stats in the gamepad....which is not groundbreaking at all (if you think about guns the comparision can already be done on screen, why have it in two screens?)

Sadly for Wii U owners, man got a point...

@oldschoolvandal He doesn't have a point. If ONLY inovative games find the way to the Wi U, it's gonna be a failure. People don't NECESSARILY want to keep multiple consoles on their living rooms; if it has the hardware, it should aim to have a large title library.

@Nodashi That's what Nintendo, Wii U owners and game addicts like me would like to see happening. Lots of great games in every platform.

But if you think as a developer...

Why would you re-work a title that you are not spending any more money with (except for any not announced yet DLC) and invest to make it work in a new system that has no installed consumer base yet?

Additionally, nobody knows what the few (400k) people who bought it would like to play yet and most important (due to the big differential that is the gamepad) how they would like to play.

Again, sadly...man has a point...

@Akijo @maf17 i have a 4 year old computer, i spend $1000 spend like 100-200 dolars in original games on steam at year. How much did you say you spend in your call of duty and other games every year? consoles are expensive too.

@Akijo @maf17 Some people work and buy their own computers :)About controler being as good, c'mon, it can be used (altough I'm not capable of using it), but I guess we all know it's not nearly as fast and precise. I'm sure developers do since all console shooters have aim assist.

@Nodashi @Akijo @maf17 Hear this! I've played Mafia 2 with joystick on PC. I don't know if aim assist (which is totally cheating for FPS) was turned on or off, but I hit area where I died like 20 times. So I took the keyboard and mouse - 100% headshots from long distance and finished area instantly.

I don't think you can win in FPS against someone using mouse on PC then you use joystick with aim assists off.

@emptycow @wcwj26 LOL The 360 is the lowest in graphical capabilities between PC, Wii-U, PS3, and 360. CoD games also aren't that great looking and shouldn't be graphical benchmarks to compare with. Most console games are even run around 540p and upscaled to 720p. The Wii-U isn't killing it with hardware over the others but it still beats the 360. Give it some time when someone makes a game focused on the Wii-U and can really use it. Games on the PS3 at launch looked worse than 360 with almost every game despite better hardware. Then people cared and invested time to make games look better and we get games like Heavy Rain or Uncharted 3 and no 360 games even come close.

Comparing the Wii-U to the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft should be pretty simple. It would be sad for them to release something that doesn't beat out the Wii-U when the systems are still at least two years out with how little news there is on them.

While I don't like playing first person games without a mouse and keyboard. It would be cool to be able to have the menu stuff on the tablet screen so you can see them without pausing the game. Being able to keep open the map, quest log, and inventory to change on the fly would be nice.

I can understand it not being here though. A lot of the people that would buy the game are gamers that own the other systems it is for and would already have the game. Re-releasing games like this on the Wii-U won't see much for them. Like Batman Arkham City, the people that want to play it will have done so already or elsewhere and I don't feel it will get much success. The best target for Wii-U is gamers who had a Wii and upgraded without having other consoles, or with new games. Nintendo needs to get behind companies and make sure games on the Wii-U aren't coming in 4th place each time behind the PC, PS3, and 360. At least visually it should be in second as long as the developers don't just do a lazy port, which is what most games will be for a long time.

or in real world talk, anyone who wanted Borderlands bought it months ago on some other format so we dont see any point in spending lots of money developing for another console that will get hardly any sales

cant say i blame the man

i can understand releasing new games on all the available platforms, but i cant understand why and developer would want to port an old game over

You know, that is the same BS excuse people used to not put their games on Wii. The better reason would be I don't like money. Like the Wii before it, just because it has a certain controller as the main controller does not mean you have to use it for primary controls. The classic controller on Wii and the Pro controller on Wii U can be used as primary controllers.

I think it'd be pretty fun to have 3 players (splitscreen+gamepad) or 4 players (4-way splitscreen) on 1 system playing borderlands.

But I guess the WiiU can't handle that.

I think developers fear that people only buy Nintendo games on a Nintendo console. Look what happened with the Wii... 3rd party devs stopped making games because they didn't sell well. Same will probably happen with the Wii U.

@Vodoo 3rd party devs stopped making games on the Wii for two reasons.

1. The Wii wasn't as powerful as the 360 or PS3, so having three identical games wasn't possible, so the Wii got crappy watered down ports that no one wanted to buy for obvious reasons.

2. The devs just simply aren't innovative anymore, it's not like how it used to be. If 2nd party devs can produce smash hits on the wii, why couldn't 3rd party devs put some elbow grease into Wii exclusives too? There's no reason they couldn't make games like No More Heroes, Xenoblade, Madworld, etc. They just choose to be lazy, it's not the hardware that's the issue, it's the software.

@Vodoo Yup, latest gen Mario.....

Benchmark revenue projection sales for 3rs party developers are not associated with Nintendo consoles.

Casual gaming is where it's at for Nintendo, profitable for Nintendo Wii and last gen for sure. Profitable for Nintendo Wii U, only time will tell.

@emptycow @Anema1986

hey "dude", do you have inside information about the full specs of the Wii U? If you do not can you please stop speculatiing on something you have no real hard facts about and just quoting stuff from other forums/threads/sites. This is known, third party game developers who created Mass Effect or Batman or Cod, did not have a lot of time to port the game over to the Wii U. I am sure that over time when the developers have time to play around with the Wii U and get to know the hardware better they will create better games that will utilize the systems raw power. Also, there has been developers, that said that coding for the Wii U is similar to the Xbox, which everyone knows is a lot better than coding for the PS3.

Next time, get your facts right before coming here spilling that kind of filth.

No EA title will really come to the Wii U, Nintendo told EA to eat shit and didn't want to force their users to use Origin. So EA pulled support for Mass Effect 3 and we probably won't see a lot of EA games on the Wii U because of that.

Couldn't think of an obvious natural tablet feature? What was the feature for the PS3 or 360? PC and Mac, the obvious have-to-have-it feature, is the mouse. 360 or PS3? One could make the argument that it connects to a TV, but a PC can easily do that now, and even if that was the reason, why both consoles, why not just one? Wireless Controllers? PC as well. God, I hope people don't look at development of the Wii U like this. The idea that you need to find a natural have-to-have feature to make a game for a consoles doesn't make much sense since that reason doesn't hold for any other game or console.

Sadly, this is exactly what the Wii suffered from when developers were trying to find a way to use the motion control, or not making games because they didn't use the motion control, whether it was necessary or not. How about you just make the game like any other console since it has a pro controller and leave it at that? Hopefully this isn't the real reason and it was just a development timing issue, because this is a bit of a nonsense reason.
