Why BioWare Hasn't Shown Much Mass Effect Andromeda Footage Yet

Timing is everything.

Electronic Arts showed almost no Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay during its E3 2016 briefing in June. With it also not being shown at Gamescom this week, questions have been raised about the game's status. However, EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund said in a new interview that the game remains on schedule and there is no cause for alarm.

The developer hasn't shown much yet because the timing isn't right, he said. Right now, EA's focus is understandably on its holiday titles like Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2. Looking forward, you can expect to see some new Andromeda gameplay.

"You'll get [your first look at gameplay] in the not too distant future," Soderlund said when Game Informer asked him about the lack of footage at E3 and Gamescom.

Soderlund said he understands that gamers are hungry for Andromeda footage. Simply put, EA believes the time is not yet right to show off the game in greater detail.

"I just came back from a short vacation and I played through the first three hours of the game," he said. "It's very playable, and there is no alarm about, 'Why aren't they showing it?' It's strictly that the game will get the right type of exposure at the right time and that we can the right voice for it. Right now we're focused on our big titles for [October through December], and when that's done, we'll shift to Mass Effect. You'll see a lot more very shortly."

Soderlund didn't get any more specific than that as it relates to when the footage may be released. EA and BioWare typically announce some Mass Effect franchise news on November 7--N7 Day--but nothing yet has tied an Andromeda announcement to that date.

Andromeda is slated for release between January and March of 2017. The game was originally scheduled to come out in 2016, but was delayed "to make sure [it] deliver[s] everything the game can be and should be."

At E3, BioWare introduced players to the game's hero, Ryder, showing off the character's female version. For more, check out GameSpot's interview with BioWare, "Mass Effect Andromeda Dev on Studio Tensions, Female Leads, and the Scars From 3's Ending."

In other news about the Mass Effect series, EA has teased that Mass Effect remasters could happen.

Th biggest flaw I see in their logic is that the communities for Mass Effect and these other EA titles don't cross-over. If anything they should have brought Andromeda forward and pushed Titanfall or Battlefield back. Two FPS shooters, no matter how different, are still just multiplayer shooters whereas Bioware is a massive sprawling single-player and dialog-driven experience. Most people waiting on Mass Effect likely don't give a shit about any of the other games EA has coming out this Holiday.

@MarcRecon: The only multiplayer games I'm excited for are couch co op or online co op games on steam cuz I'm not paying for playstation plus. Stuff like Shadow Warrior 2, other than that, no online shooters are as boring as shit.

You can't have it both ways. You can't cry at companies like Ubisoft for downgrading their games because they decided it was a smart idea to show people the game early into development, and then in the same breath cry at Bioware for not showing enough footage well before their game's release. Don't show me anything until it's really ready to be shown and it's actually in a state that's representative of the final product.

@jinzo9988: So wait, we can't criticize one extreme if we criticize the opposite extreme? We want a middle group, actually we want more, I mean the reason watch dogs was criticized was not because they showed us stuff, it was because it was lying. Your argument is bad and you should be upset with yourself.

@putaspongeon: When you show something off early enough into development to where it can be changed later on during development, some people call that "lying" or "misrepresentation". That's why they shouldn't do that. That's what made Fallout 4 so wonderful. They practically didn't show anything until around 6 months before release, and what we saw is what we ended up getting.

When you show something 2 years before release and it's taken a graphical hit out of necessity because they need those processing resources for other things or it doesn't perform well in new areas that they added later and had to scale back or whatever it is... it's misleading and you're called a liar for it. If gamers can't handle development changes then don't fucking show them anything until you're far enough into development that sure you're not going to be changing much anymore.

meh calm down, in my opinion making games like this takes time as evrything during these times, to make a decent( not necessarily succesful) game you need 2-3 years of dev and testing+ add the company might be working on something else meantime, it's like dc project they announced about that sci fi game but they've been working on the witcher still and it looks like they started working full time on it just recently, this is my idea at least (=

Because its going to end up as a Singleplayer MMO collectathon like Dragon Age Inquisition

It also doesnt help that the designer of Mass Effect Andromeda is a total Racist.

http://heatst.com/culture-wars/mass-effect-designer-manveer-heir-hates-white-people-and-wants-the-world-to-know

Seriously it's stunning this Cu*t gets away with it, its okay as long as you are only hatefull towards white people...*sigh*

Bioware is dead thank god CDPR stepped up to take their place, and they do it better than bioware ever did (at least everything after Baulders gate 2)

If Mass Effect turns out total crap then there is always Cyberpunk 2077 to look forward to

@naz99: Yuck. CDPR hasn't released a single must-own game yet. The Witcher series is overrated and has terrible combat and a bland and boring open-world environment. I hope they get it right with Cyberpunk, but until I see gameplay footage of it, I'm not holding my breath and I'm not losing any sleep over barely making any progress in Witcher 3.

They're probably trying to pull a No Man's Sky, by letting the fans fill in the blanks and creating this massive bubble of hype that will pop after the game actually comes out.

personally I'm skipping battlefield and I really don't know about Titanfall.....it looks okay but not so keen on hero shooters, the MP side really doesn't interest me....I like mechs and mech combat and mech customization and it feels like they're missing a golden opportunity.....so I may pass on that too....

Mass Effect is really the only game EA has that I like......

they really needed to show more, show some of the galaxy, show a couple planets, show the armors and a couple weapons, show a little of what's new.....don't reveal the enemy though, don't reveal story too much, don't get into why they go to Andromeda, leave more for us to find out but show a little more than an expanded trailer......

gameplay? I didn't expect that, i expected to get more of a feel for what Andromeda was about.....or what's in it, what's better and/or new???

Makes little sense. If the game was coming out Christmas 2017, sure, wait for 2017 to promote it big time.

If indeed the game is on schedule, then they will have to advertise it, in the upcoming months.
So no matter what, Mass Effect PR campaign will clash with Battlefield 1 and other big EA titles.
Makes no sense not to use the biggest Gaming Expo to promote it.

As we all know, hype builds up over time. From a business perspective, It is good to launch a game when is almost at its max.
That way you maximize first month sales. And if the game is as good as people expected, it will continue to sell well over time.

That is what happened with the Witcher 3 for instance.
If the game doesn't go as well as expected, the first month sales will make it a comercial success no matter what. See AC Unity (that sold well even for a bugged game), or Destiny that people expected more but wasn't as over the top as expected.

Or even NMS that is the biggest indie game launch and even selling more than most AAA games.

If EA could, they would take the opportunity.
There is nothing wrong with delays. Better delay a game then release a game full of bugs or that isn't good.
They may just not be ready to announce a scheduling delay, but in my opinion, they'll most likely will release at later time then their January-March 2017 time frame.

@linthes999: No there's finally starting to be a change in the video game industry's horrible practice of prematurely announcing games and release dates only to inevitably delay them multiple times. It's not changing fast enough and across all studios, but you're starting to see more major publishers wait until their games are close to completion before announcing release windows. Bethesda and Fallout 4 proved to the industry how you can maximize hype without losing it to impatience and time lapse by releasing their game within 6 months of their reveal and release date.

Ubisoft is doing the same with Watchdogs amongst other titles. EA already announced Andromeda two E3s ago, back when pathological delays was an accepted common practice, and they are holding back on showing too much of their game specifically to get all the attention once they do. The developer is being quite transparent about it, it's because of marketing. Mass Effect usually comes out in the Winter/Spring and as much as their franchise is huge, it would still get drowned within all the gameplay and advertising of Fall/Holiday games. Once games are all but out in November, nobody else will be making reveals, so when they do show us a plethora of gameplay and story clips, they'll get all the attention and will be competing against much fewer competitors over the following months leading to release.

This makes absolutely no sense. "Lets not show our Jan-March AAA game (almost September now, remind you) because we wanna focus on our fall releases". When the **** are you going to show the game then? Christmas? Your fall releases will still be drowning out your showing. Should have shown off this shit awhile back. I mean seriously. Haven't really been keeping up with this despite being a huge fan of the first one. Blew my mind away reading its due out "Jan-Mar 2017". Nothing shown and its almost September.

@Raphy_Turtle: Too bad they did something EVEN WORSE, which was announce their game WAAAAAAAAAY too early, then spend the next 2 years showing **** all while their fanbase got more and more frustrated. For what you mentioned to work properly, they have to forgo the announcement till like 6 months before as well. You can't do your announcement reveal then show nothing for 2 years, that just indicates troubled development.
