Why BioWare Hasn't Shown Much Mass Effect Andromeda Footage Yet

Timing is everything.

Electronic Arts showed almost no Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay during its E3 2016 briefing in June. With it also not being shown at Gamescom this week, questions have been raised about the game's status. However, EA Studios boss Patrick Soderlund said in a new interview that the game remains on schedule and there is no cause for alarm.

The developer hasn't shown much yet because the timing isn't right, he said. Right now, EA's focus is understandably on its holiday titles like Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2. Looking forward, you can expect to see some new Andromeda gameplay.

"You'll get [your first look at gameplay] in the not too distant future," Soderlund said when Game Informer asked him about the lack of footage at E3 and Gamescom.

Soderlund said he understands that gamers are hungry for Andromeda footage. Simply put, EA believes the time is not yet right to show off the game in greater detail.

"I just came back from a short vacation and I played through the first three hours of the game," he said. "It's very playable, and there is no alarm about, 'Why aren't they showing it?' It's strictly that the game will get the right type of exposure at the right time and that we can the right voice for it. Right now we're focused on our big titles for [October through December], and when that's done, we'll shift to Mass Effect. You'll see a lot more very shortly."

Soderlund didn't get any more specific than that as it relates to when the footage may be released. EA and BioWare typically announce some Mass Effect franchise news on November 7--N7 Day--but nothing yet has tied an Andromeda announcement to that date.

Andromeda is slated for release between January and March of 2017. The game was originally scheduled to come out in 2016, but was delayed "to make sure [it] deliver[s] everything the game can be and should be."

At E3, BioWare introduced players to the game's hero, Ryder, showing off the character's female version. For more, check out GameSpot's interview with BioWare, "Mass Effect Andromeda Dev on Studio Tensions, Female Leads, and the Scars From 3's Ending."

In other news about the Mass Effect series, EA has teased that Mass Effect remasters could happen.

It's a smart decision. There's no reason to garner hype for the game, so why put something out ahead of time. Mass Effect is an established IP, and everyone knows that this game is coming out. There's little reason to create a smoke-and-mirrors demo (thereby giving fans potentially false impression of the final product), or show something unfinished.

in the mean time, EA try to find exactly right parts to put it as DLC in season-pass.

They want to focus on their bigger upcoming games?? Come the hell on, Andromeda is one of the most anticipated and biggest games of this decade. And the lack of footage just makes EA & Bioware look none to confident....

@Jimbowesker: Yep, what they should do is hype the hell out of it and feed us the whole game in images and videos before it comes out. While they are at it they should also lie about all the features that will be in the game....

@skippert: A super hyped game with a setting in space. Where the developer lies about what features are present in the game? Where have I heard this before? Will this game also have "Dark Souls or Journey like multiplayer" I wander?

They'll announce an release date and then as it gets close they will suddenly say sorry we've delayed it.

@Dilandau88: "this is the most highly anticipated game in a decade" Okay that's just a bit much. Especially after ME 3 and the past 2 Dragon Age games haven't been close or quite up to Biowares old standards.

@Dilandau88: LOL "most highly anticipated game in a decade" for d*ckriding biodrones maybe, every person that made Mass effect great is gone, so if you are holdinng any delusions that it will recapture the magic of the original trilogy keep dreaming. Not to mention the ending soured people on this franchise.

@nibbin1191: So you logic here is that its possible to recreate the magic of a particular intellectual project without the masterminds who created it being involved? More often than not once the core team that created said property leaves it goes to crap, For example the new Ghost busters was a disaster mainly because it had zero input from the og creators, Halo has gone down in quality ( although its still good) Bioshock 2 was garbage ken Levine was not involved, metroid other m was garbage made by team ninja, Ninja Gaiden crap once Itagaki left , this new Metal gear survival looks like straight up dogsh*t without Kojima behind it. You do have rare cases where it works for example the new starwars worked well but mainly because they got as many people who new what starwars was about involved.

Finally EA are Legendary for ruining game franchise (sims , dead space, battlefront) even if the original team was still involved the spectre of EA would destroy this game

Mass effect will be garbage to ok

Heres a crazy idea launch the game when its done. No previews, betas, and stop listening to PR. Crazy I know, right?

Hey Steven, when you get about an hr of that film done can you release it so "the fans" can make sure its ok. Hey Banksy instead of dropping your art anonymously, how about a preview for your "fans" so they can make sure its to their liking.

See how social media has done nothing but ruin everything.

@me3639: i hope u dont mean Spillberg by saying steven. cuz he is a shitty filmmaker who ruined every Director he is friends with like Lucas and Jackson by making them care more for the business part of making movies rather than the creative part.

I am fine with them delaying the game as long as it is the best product they could make when it is released. I just want to see what information about the game they release on N7 day. As long as it looks good without giving away any major spoilers it will be great for me.

I have been saying this for a while now they hyped it up big for E3 this year and all we got was a behind the scenes making of video the third one by the way. They really haven't shown us anything yet which is strange for a game over 4 years in development .

@Chernnunos: Or how about not hyping everybody up with an incomplete game that is subject to change?

I much prefer it when the promotion starts a few months from launch rather than years out. Getting hyped up about a game you can't buy doesn't help anyone - customers or devs.

@Chernnunos: There's an entire professional industry devoted to providing gamers information about games. And a whole other cottage industry of streamers devoted to the same thing.

There's no reason to spend ****loads of money on disappointment anymore.

@Chernnunos: None of that mattered 24 hours after the game came out and we'd all seen a zillion streams of people playing the game and we knew exactly what it was. When new games are coming out, all we've got to do is restrain ourselves, use a little common sense, and not pre-order (or at least, not from anywhere without a return policy).

@Chernnunos: Which is an issue I found out about by watching some streams, reading some reviews, and seeing what people were saying on message boards. It's a big part of why I haven't bought No Man's Sky.

I'm telling you, gamers have all the resources they need to figure out which games they'll enjoy, and it doesn't rely on publishers being open and forthcoming.

It's no big secret why there hasn't been that much information or video released for MEA when you consider that the past mistakes Bioware has made is over hyping their own game . For instance for DAI there were game choice story mechanics that were shown in some of their footage that would of been a rather unique experience to the genre that did not make it to the released version of the game. Also they were quoted as saying DAI was "Built for PC first in mind" when it was obvious that it was more of a console port with it's limited gaming features that marks it as a step down from the first two installments of the game. And of course we all know about ME 3 being proclaimed as having player choice and no A,B,C type of an ending. And really the fan base only buys in to what they are being shown and told. It looks like they are not repeating the same mistakes that they had made with their other titles and going forward they are going with a news blackout concerning their games.

They're predicting early 2017 but my money's on June, and that we'll see a lot more gameplay at E3 2017. Which is OK, take whatever time is needed to make it good.
