Why Assassin's Creed Syndicate Won't Have Multiplayer

Narrative is king in Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate won’t have a multiplayer component, Ubisoft Quebec developers told GameSpot.

According to creative director Marc-Alexis Cote, developers wanted to bring the stealth-action series back to its roots and focus on the core single-player experience. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is narrative-driven and features a handful of new elements as well as major tweaks to combat and stealth; Ubisoft Quebec chose to hone and polish these aspects over adding in any sort of co-op or online play.

All activities in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, main story events as well as side missions, have been tailored to feed back into the narrative and in some way, however small, contribute to your goal of overthrowing Templar control of London. The game is built to define and deliver a very clear fantasy: the tale of Jacob and Evie Frye. Adding a multiplayer mode would disrupt this delivery and pull away from the experience Ubisoft Quebec wants to create.

No Caption Provided

"The reason we are doing this is to really focus on the roots of the franchise," Cote said. "That’s why all nine studios are focused on delivering this single-player experience."

Executive producer Francois Pelland corroborated that Ubisoft was looking to return to the roots of Assassin's Creed, which meant pouring all resources into a tight single-player campaign. But he also noted that Syndicate's emphasis on intimate melee fights and the addition of systemic vehicles you can hijack was something that wouldn't work well with online play.

"We felt like, especially with the type of fight that we have, a very hand-to-hand, very close combat fight, that we needed to have very high responsiveness on the system," Pelland explained. "That's one thing. It's navigation as well. When we decided two years and a half ago, we said, let's do London of 1868. You cannot have vehicles that are just cosmetic. You cannot have vehicles that are just there to look good. Players would have said, I want to drive those things. That adds complexity to the thing. It's more technical reasons [for leaving out multiplayer.]"

Thank you Ubisoft! Finally you start to head in the right direction. Multiplayer is NOT required in every game released, look at Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, etc. You can still make great games without some less than average add on for the sake of placating the MP fans and they're not as popular as many think they are. MP in all AC games has been boring, co-op in Unity was too laggy to make it worthwhile and the number of players that bothered to plan or work together in MP Unity was and is extremely low. Just make an extremely good SP game and get the series back on track thanks. I own and have played every single AC game released, make this one matter.

Just as well, I don't care for AC multiplayer at all.

Also kudos to Ubi for admitting that multiplayer isn't always a logical or beneficial addition to a game.

@Paoksis Exactly, Assassin's Creed has always been about the singleplayer. To me the multiplayer just felt like a tacked on feature that was never needed.

Why did they take it out? The assassin's creed multiplayer was really fun, I mean the older ones not Unity btw.

I think this all comes down to timing/implementation. I waited until recently to play AC unity, and it seems with what updates they have released, the multiplayer works quite well. Enough for my friends and I to have a blast playing all of the different missions. I think Multiplayer in the AC universe has a ton of potential, and if they were to allocate resources correctly, and time the release properly, they could spawn a whole new genre of multiplayer that many people have been waiting for, even if they don't know it XD

It's great they're focusing on the Single player story now, but Co-op interests me more. A great co-op story would be even better. BETTER YET! Why not do both, have a great SP story and a great Co-op story???

Separate, not Unity's style. Just hold back the game a year and do it, you'll win game of the year for sure. SP in Japan, Co-op in Egypt. But the co-op has to be like what i'll mention below.

Co-op Character Creation... bare with me.

  1. What i'm thinking isn't one like most RPGs. What i'm suggesting is a set based of character designs ones that allow the player to select from race and gender, and beard styles. Anything else would be too much. Of course if they do more then cool, but this way everyone can play as who they want to.
  2. Class based Assassins
    • I get we all like being master assassins but when it comes to co-op, being able to upgrade and do everything that the other players can do isn't that great.. it's not as fun (co-op wise) with two/four Arno's running around
    • I think co-op should limit itself to 3 players, if they use the Classes i'll discuss below
    • 3 Classes: Range, Poison, Bomb.
      • Range-Bow (When we move back in time) upgrades such as: draw faster, shoot two arrows, more range, rope arrows, pin arrows, etc. (rope arrow could be used like the zip-line in syndicate, and pin arrows can pin enemies to walls/the floors)
      • Poison-Upgrades such as: sleep, timed poison, stealth poison, poison darts, berserk poison, vomit poison (doesn't kill but just causes a guard to leave and may have others check on him/her)
      • Bomb- Smoke bomb, booby traps, explosive bombs, distraction bombs, tear gas bomb

    • All classes can work together, creating poison arrows, poison bombs, bomb arrows, or all 3 together.
    • Select your weapon/fighting style
      • Because you should have to work together, each player should pick a weapon to start and train with, being masters of all weapons wouldn't focus on co-op if you can do it all yourself.
      • Example: Range assassin picks hand-to-hand combat to train in, which can upgrade to disarming, and redirecting attacks (Ezio in Revelations trailer)

Co-op Customization... this is better but a lot

  1. What I didn't think was really useful in AC:Unity was how the clothing had attributes that improved the 4 skills. Rather the upgrades to the character should be the focus like what i said above
  2. Customization regarding clothing should only consist of selecting what hood we want (could be any from the past games plus more [syndicate's hood is sick], chest pieces, forearms, etc... pretty much clothing is just for the cosmetic look
  3. Armor- the more armor/padding you have for defense the slower you are. But you can take more damage and it alters your animations as well. More heavily padded assassins can have animations where they guard attacks with their forearm, more barbaric attacks.
  4. No armor- Assassins with no armor are quicker and it is shown in climbing, running, and their combat. Animations could consist of Parkour flips, quicker dogging. Similar to Shao Jun.

5. Weapon placement under customization: I like how Syndicate has concealable weapons. But that should be an opportunity in every game from now on. If we're going back in the past being able to hide our weapons should improve our stealth (notoriety meter).

Imagine, a 3 man team as above. The bomb assassin can carry the bombs on his waist or across his chest, etc. carrying a axe on his back or maybe. The poison assassin uses a whip and can carry it around his/her waist or Indiana jones style. And the bow assassin can carry two daggers that can be on his waist, lower back, legs, or on his back Riddick style.

If the weapons are easily seen guards should be more worried about the player visibly armed. This could be used as a way to distract guards, the guard could watch and maybe follow the assassin but not confront him unless he/she does something to piss them off.

Co-op Missions... not the story but something else

  1. Of course there should be a co-op story but that's up to Ubisoft to decide, this is what i'm thinking for post story. Suggesting the story doesn't end with us becoming master assassins but rather fundamental members in the order. There can be a post story set of missions that'll let us become master assassins.
  2. Remember the missions we sent our brotherhood on in Brotherhood and Revelations? Those missions are the one's i'm suggesting. This would also provide Ubisoft to make more money with DLCs
    • They could have 10 or 15 missions already done for release in various cities, Rome, Florance, Italy, Masyaf. And later throughout the months could release other cities with different missions.

@chippiez @pdavis3 Not sure if my reply went through, but I was said: "they don't have to hold it back to implement "my ideas" but rather hold it back to make a better game. AC has been decreasing in quality and increasing in quantity. That's the wrong way to go about it, at least to me it is. As well as catering to one group when there are many groups in the AC community (SP lovers only) is the wrong way to go too. They should cater to the SP lovers, Co-op lover, and even the MP lovers. I think the majority (again it's opinion based) would rather have an amazing game than a subpar one. And if they need to hold back a year for that, a lot of people would be down.

AC started off as single-player only in the first place anyway. It means I'll actually have a chance at getting all the trophies this time as well. The online-only trophies from Brotherhood onwards meant the Platinum trophy was always out of reach for me since I didn't play the MP.

Thank god. I've never had any interest in the AC games besides easy achievements andf it's driven me crazy that I can't get 100% completion because of the awful multiplayer. It's not worth wading through that garbage to unlock the last achievements I need to complete the games.

At last!

After 100% AC1 and AC2 it was so annoying that the next games all had MP achievements as I didn't like the MP.

Why cant we have the option to have SP achievements only when we start a game?

There should be the option to have SP achievements only, MP only and SP & MP only. I hate the fact o have loads of games that I have completed in SP but cannot get 100% achievement cos of the MP ones.

@lordballie11 Since when did buying a game entitle you to 100% of the associated achievements? Since when did the number by your name measure your worth? Oh wait... nevermind.

I saw all the Assassin's Creed articles on the homepage and this one grabbed my attention the most as I prefer single player. Was thinking about Unity but have plenty to tide me over and can wait for this. I have good memories of London too so will be interesting how this game depicts the era.

@RockmasteR-_- I played the multiplayer before, its fun for the first few times, then it gets repetitive, and repeats to the point it became boring, after that I tried to play to get a few trophies but... the trophies are unfair, you need to set with friends a map to gain the trophies, one of the most unneeded things to do, it kills the whole concept of fairly achieving the trophy, since trying to obtain fairly is nearly impossible.

That must be very difficult having 9 studios from around the world all building the same game. Some studios are obviously more talented, like Montreal, and then trying to patch everything together and have it all play cohesively.

My question is... WHERE'S THE NEXT SPLINTER CELL?!!! Enough with AC, bring on Splinter Cell for the new systems. Maybe that's what the unannounced game is?

It is a PR move after they bit off too much with Unity, but it could be good for the franchise.

On the other hand, I don't think vehicles are, although breaking their rule about vehicles opens up more recent history to exploration.

That is typical for the franchise. That is why the games have felt so patchwork as if they were assembled by different teams with different goals. Most aspects of the games have come across as minigames they outsourced to other (still internal to Ubisoft) studios.

I can't believe it, is that hope I'm feeling. Well done Ubisoft

...uh oh. Come on guys, please have some common sense and don't pre-order this thing. Unity was atrocious at launch. They're doing the same exact thing they did for Unity by throwing people and money at this. Do not trust these people. Make them earn it.

I applaud Ubisoft's acknowledgement of Unity's flaws, and their intention to focus more on a single player experience. The multi-player in the last few games has been a collection of poor excuses to sell DLC. I would have preferred a year without an AC game. They could do well to start treating the series like they do Far Cry and put a couple of years (and a real production cycle) between incarnations.

That being said, the AC games have always screamed as a real opportunity to do real "in story" co-op. The basis of focusing on a brother/sister duo in Syndicate's trailer just seems to be ripe for the first real co-op experience in ANY game in a long time. We haven't seen real story-driven co-op in years. When you see how poorly a game like Bloodbourne incorporates co-op but how well received said co-op is... One can only hope we see some game dev decide that the days of having only competitive multiplayer in games is now over.

So much spin.

I love single player games so I'm happy but just be honest. Unity was a disaster & you just can't do it right. You need to save face & make a good game in the series again. Something easier to achieve.

Wait a minute....a big franchise added multiplayer...and then REMOVED it? Wow, I'm shocked. +1 Ubisoft. Now get the modern day story to actually mean something again and I'll be interested again. I'm with Kevin VanOrd and the rest of the minority in that I liked the Desmond story.

That is very good indeed , since I don't do multiplayer , but the problem is Assassins Creed games are often complex , they should release a game every 2-3 years , and not every year.
