Who Should Play Drake in the Uncharted Movie? Maybe Not Mark Wahlberg, Voice Actor Says

"There's still a lot of work and truthfully, I think it's got an uphill battle."

The Uncharted movie has been brewing for a long time now, though we still don't know who will play Nathan Drake or any of the other lead roles.

Now the man who plays the character in the games, Nolan North, has spoken up to say one of the names floated around, Mark Wahlberg, would not be his first choice.

"The last I heard Mark Wahlberg was still in the running, but I really don't see it," he told The Daily Star [link has quite a few NSFW thumbnail images].

Wahlberg's involvement in the Uncharted movie dates back to 2010. At the time, The Fighter's David O. Russell was attached to direct, with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, as well as Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson, mentioned as potential actors. Russell has since dropped out, as has the next man to take the job, Limitless director Neil Burger.

No Caption Provided

As of November 2014, Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief director Seth Gordon is helming the Uncharted movie. Additionally, Mark Boal, who won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, is working on the screenplay.

More recently, it was reported that Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World actor Chris Pratt turned down the opportunity to play Drake. That's too bad, North said.

"I thought Chris Pratt would do it justice, but guess what he did it already in Guardians of the Galaxy--that was a Nathan Drake character. He's vulnerable, he's kinda funny, he's kinda that hero with a smirk, cocky and confident. That scene when he says 'I'm Starlord'--that's such a Drake moment."

North added that he would have liked to play Drake, but he thinks he's too old now. He also joked (perhaps correctly) that by the time the Uncharted movie gets made he might be old enough to play Sullivan, Drake's longtime treasure-hunting pal who is many years his elder.

"I wanted the part, back 10 years ago when I was 34/35 doing this kinda thing, but it's taken forever," he said. "Who knows, maybe by the time the producers get it together, I'll be old enough to play Sullivan."

No new details about the Uncharted movie have been announced in quite a while; the current state of the film, which at one time was expected to start filming in 2015, is unknown. North believes the movie has a lot of potential, but it also isn't in the best spot right now.

"People who've seen the script are comparing it to Indiana Jones and National Treasure, but there's still a lot of work and truthfully, I think it's got an uphill battle," he said.

Finally, North said the film's producers wanted him to have some kind of role in it, and he was personally jazzed about this for a time. However, he no longer feels that way.

"The business of Hollywood dictates that you need a big name on the billboard," he said. "I've told them that I really don't want to do a cameo."

In early 2015, a Sony hack revealed a number of new details regarding what was planned for the Uncharted movie, and offered a look at the 124-page script. For his part, North has said he believes fans aren't interested in seeing Hollywood's adaptation of the blockbuster video game series.

Whether or not North is ever in another piece of Uncharted media remains to be seen. Last month's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was the final game in the series to star Nathan Drake.

Uncharted isn't the only movie based on a Naughty Dog game in the works right now. Sony is making a movie out of The Last of Us, though last we heard, it was stuck in development hell.

The two best people for the roles are Nathan Fillion for Drake and Bruce Campbell for Sulley, they are seriously perfect for the roles.

If Nathan is too old for Drake then the second-best guy imo would be Jensen Ackles, who most people probably know as Dean from Supernatural, he has the spot on wit and humor.

Arnold Swarzeneger as Drake, Sylvester Stallone as Sam, Richard Gere as Sully. This is the only way..

But seriously, Mark Ruffalo would play a great Nathan Drake..

I love Mark Wahlberg and I think he should play every role in the movie, Eddie Murphy style.

@luckmark: Same If they're to get an actor in for this it should be a big star and Fillion isn't really that name we need.

why even bother trying? the characters have such unique voices and personalities that it would just be awkward watching others try to be them. either make it full CGI so the actors that made the characters great can reprise their roles or just dont bother with it at all.

Here's the thing. Video game movies will sooner or later become what comic book movies are today. However, to get there, they can't skip steps. I knew from the moment my brother showed me some of the Warcraft shots he and ILM were working on over a year ago that Warcraft would be entertaining enough and make money one way or another, which would in turn be a step in the right direction for VG movies. Assassin's Creed (which he's also working on) has very good chances of being a step up from Warcraft. After a couple of successful movies, just like Spiderman and X-Men, it should show Hollywood that there is a lot of material and great stories to be made into movies based in the video game world.

The problem today is that everyone wants to move so fast that we inevitably end up skipping steps and fumbling in the process. Look at DC with Batman v Superman... You need to work your way to the Avengers equivalent. Likewise, VG movies need a few humble success stories before we get movies with equivalent levels of hype as their video game counterparts. That also means letting enough time pass to distance potential movies from their inspiration. Otherwise they get compared so heavily that there's just no way everyone can be happy. The reason comic book movies are so popular nowadays is partly because they are based on material which has been around long enough to be called ''classics''. If you made a comic book movie about a comic that came into existence just a couple years ago, it would be torn to shreds by critics and even the creative team would struggle because they wouldn't be sure how much to take right from the source material and how much to adapt for the movie.

Assassin's Creed hasn't been around quite long enough to be called a ''classic'' but its lore is very broad and open to interpretation. Uncharted and Last of Us are story based games which were already movies by their own right. Which makes the job of adapting them to a movie a difficult one. The choices being to either copy as much as possible which inevitably leads us to compare it side by side and ultimately be disappointed; or adapt it and risk being accused of being nothing more than an Indiana Jones clone using Uncharted's brand... Ubisoft is working on movies for many of their franchises and I have to say they likely will be the ones to break the ice. Most of their franchises like the Tom Clancys, have had so many games which themselves are based/inspired by series of popular novels, that adapting those into movies has enough wiggle room to adapt something interesting. None of their franchises really have a stiff storyline to follow. Whereas Naughty Dog's games on the other hand are all about their story. So Once Ubi's movies hit the market and hopefully raise enough money between them to get both movie goers and studios excited for more VG movies, THEN would be the perfect time for a big budget movie like Halo or even Mass Effect to come around and set the Avengers standard for the genre.

Halo has been around just long enough to have plenty of lore to adapt and a name known by both gamers who've played the game and others who just know the name. THEY could adapt a movie that stays loyal to the source but takes a few liberties without pissing off fans. After a few years of good title films and one or two big movies like a Halo, then we could start thinking about an Uncharted. By then, the games will be distant enough to feel nostalgic to fans, giving production the chance to adapt a screenplay that is both familiar and refreshing to fans. Anyway sooner of later we'll get there. I just don't think we can release an Uncharted movie tomorrow and expect it to be as appealing as a movie as it is a game.

Ryan Reynolds, I don't care that he doesn't look like Nathan but he has the same type of personality and he has played that humorous character many times before that and he is a top notch actor.

Joe Flanigan.

But that was back during Stargate: Atlantis, he was much like Drake in that role anyway. He's 50yo now though. Likely a missed opportunity for him and others (Nathan Fillion).

The games are excellent and set the bar so high anyway, we don't really need a movie.

Joe Falnnigan. Uncharted 1-3 was pretty much him, but even 4 with the Neeson nose still looks like him a bit.

Nathan Fillion. and no, he's not too old, there's no rule that says Drake is absolutely a certain age. I think a more seasoned 40 something Drake fits better than a 30 something, even if the age difference is slight.

And if you think about the parallels...Harrison Ford got his start as a space ship Captian in Star Wars and later became the archeological hunter Indiana Jones. Fillion was a Captain in Firefly and should be the next Drake. Just makes sense.

@digitalheadbutt: why do people keep saying that? He's only in his 40's. Drake doesn't have a specified age. How old was Laura Croft in the Tomb Raider game? Exactly, you don't know. It. Didn't matter

Will someone please just give Naughty Dog a chance to create a full-featured animated movie? Not even Doug Jones could get a video game movie right. Let's take this out of Hollywood's hands and put it in the hands of the original creators. They were more than good enough, and animation these days is more than good enough.

Chris Pratt is the only one I think who could do a really good job. Since he turned it down, maybe they should just forget about it. Bradley Cooper has the look but, I'm not sure if he could pull of Drake's attitude. Nathan Fillion might pull it off if he lost weight and toned up a bit. Err, make that a lot.

An Uncharted movie sounds like a horrible idea. Seeing someone else play these characters would just feel like some sort of silly role play. It's a game, and quite honestly, it should stay that way.

@Oogazi: I think Jason Bateman can chisel-out yeah. Bradley Cooper might also be a good choice since he can do comedy as well. Intentional comedy; not like the stuff Marky Mark pulled off in The Happening.

Yeah and honestly, the games are already better than a movie in most ways. If they did a good movie all it would do is drive people to try the games and probably have Sony start to poop out too many and ruin the series.

I'm with North on this one: if he could've reprised his role as Drake for the silver screen, I'd be all for it. But I can't picture anyone else playing Drake...or Elana, or Sully at this point. Between that, the horrible script that leaked last year, and the fact that Hollywood seems to have no idea how to adapt a videogame franchise to film, I'll be happy if this gets completely scrapped and my Uncharted experiences aren't marred by a half-baked treatment.

The Last of Us could be a good movie, but whereas the game stood out because of how its characters and gameplay were so seamlessly woven together, a movie adaptation would come off like a pale, 120 minute condensed version of "The Walking Dead" instead of being given a chance to show its own flavor.

Leave them both alone. We're all better off that way.
