Disney Dreamlight Valley launched in 2022 as a game planned to become free-to-play eventually, and at one point that seemed slated to occur in 2023. Most recently, however, the team has revealed that the free-to-play economy previously planned for the game is no longer in the works. Instead, the game will remain a premium game with a sticker price attached for all players. Here's everything we know about the move by Gameloft.

When Will Disney Dreamlight Valley Be Free To Play?

As mentioned, Disney Dreamlight Valley will not be a free-to-play game, despite earlier plans being announced to the contrary. The team has gone into some detail regarding why this change occured, citing an ability to develop the game differently if it has a sticker price attached and a different direction than what a free-to-play economy dictates.

"This choice ensures that Disney Dreamlight Valley will be able to continue delivering on a premium game experience for all players. It's important to us that we maintain our promise to keep delivering free content updates that add new characters, realms, clothing, furniture, and more surprises to your Valley."

In the absence of that shift, many other publicly announced plans remain in place, such as the first paid content expansion, A Rift In Time, which launches on December 5 for $30, or is included in the game's digital-exclusive Gold Edition. A physical version of the game is also inbound called the Cozy Edition, though this requires the first expansion to be purchased separately. The Cozy Edition will be available in stores beginning November 10, 2023, and includes the base game, a bundle of Moonstones (the in-game currency), a few physical gifts, and some exclusive in-game cosmetics. You can find out more in our Disney Dreamlight Valley Cozy Edition preorder guide.

More news is expected to come out of the game's video deep dive into A Rift In Time on November 1, so we'll update this story then with further details. If you're already playing or soon to move into the valley yourself, don't miss our extensive Disney Dreamlight Valley guides hub.
