What's Next for the X-Men After Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse teases three possible directions for the next film.

X-Men: Apocalypse ruled the box office this past weekend. In the film, the team of mutants faced their biggest adversary to date with the fate of the world at stake. Since X-Men: First Class, the X-Men have been fighting bigger and bigger threats each time. The question remains: What's next for the X-Men? Several clues were present in the movie which could lead to potential story ideas for the team's next big screen appearance.

There will be some spoilers for X-Men: Apocalypse below.

Uncanny X-Men #126
Uncanny X-Men #126

When Professor X and Havok visited Moira MacTaggart in her CIA office, Charles noticed a photo and discovered she had a son. In the comics, Moira had a son, Kevin MacTaggert. It turned out her son was an extremely powerful mutant with the ability to warp reality. He was such a threat, Moira kept him locked up with his powers contained. Calling himself Proteus, he was also dangerous because as his psionic energies burnt out his body, he would possess the bodies of others. The more he used his powers, the more host bodies he would need. The character was a big threat, but perhaps not enough to make an impact on the big screen.

Another possibility could stem out of the post-credits scene where a briefcase with "Essex Corp" was seen. Mr. Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) could become a threat for the mutants and could possibly target Scott Summers and Jean Grey. In the comics, Sinister manages to make a clone of Jean, who went by the name of Madelyne Pryor. She and Scott married and had a baby. The baby was infected with a techno-organic virus, had to be whisked away to the future to be cured, and eventually becomes the mutant known as Cable. It was Sinister's hope to use this baby against Apocalypse. All of this might be too convoluted for a movie plot. With Apocalypse defeated before Sinister makes an appearance, the chances of any sort of rivalry between the two is pretty slim. There's also the possibility of Cable appearing in the Deadpool sequel. It seems more likely he'd just appear in that movie without a full-scale look at his origin.

Uncanny X-Men #134
Uncanny X-Men #134

Because each movie seems to increase the threat level for the X-Men, the more likely story would be the Dark Phoenix Saga. In the current film, we see Jean struggling to keep her powers in check. During the final confrontation against Apocalypse, Xavier encourages Jean to unleash her powers. As she lets go, we do get a glimpse of the fiery bird associated with the character in the comics.

The story involved a celestial entity known as the Phoenix Force imprinting on Jean and taking her place while Jean was placed in a healing cocoon. Believing itself to actually be Jean, the power soon became too much for the human portion within. As it returned to the stars it destroyed an entire solar system.

Uncanny X-Men #137
Uncanny X-Men #137

This part of the story could also bring in the Shi'ar alien race to the movie universe. In the comics, the X-Men have had several adventures in space and this could be a way to take the franchise off Earth and into a different arena.

These possibilities would need to be built upon and fleshed out in order to work in the movies. With last three movies jumping forward ten years in between, the next film would take place in the '90s. This would allow the current team of Mystique, Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver, and Beast to gain more experience together. It would also allow other mutants like Colossus to join the team. The next movie will need to have a threat bigger than Apocalypse. Having them deal with the Dark Phoenix and possibly going out into space would be the next logical step for the franchise.

@defiler: Same. Does this qualify as clickbait? Usually, clickbait just involves an "attractive" headline to get you in the door...but linking said headline to an entirely unrelated article that's over a year old? That's next level.

They need to do the Sinister story so Cable can make his way onto the big screen.

I honestly don't know what X-Men can do next - they've done the best story arcs. Sentinels, Apocalypse and everything that was done in the first trilogy. Wasn't Dark Phoenix already involved in X3? What else is there now? They should've kept Apocalypse as a long term villain - not a feature villain

@nabinator: Yeah but the original trilogy now doesn't exist in this timeline, so they could redo the Dark Phoenix story line, especially since it wasn't handled well to begin with. Fans would be mixed on why they'd redo the story, but if they did it well then everyone would be happy.

First Class should have been a full on reboot (even has a fitting beginning title) so they could do it properly, especially since X-Men butcherer Singer was out and Vaughn even with a rushed film and lots of previous baggage from the other films made the first actual X-Men movie as opposed to Wolverine and friends and Wolverine the movie insert number. Now we have Apocalypse which should serve as a finale (even has a fitting end title), especially as most the star cast has stated that they are not coming back or likely wont be. However no, we're still going be bogged down by previous films to a degree even outside actor situations since the timeline reset doesn't stop many things from still happening. So, let's just continue to decade jump, even though NO ONE has noticeably aged since First Class despite its sequels being decades after it...Now they're going to further force out many other X-Team and character movies with no real structure in mind or care for anything outside the horrid Singer X-Men design.

FOX doesn't care about doing this right which is a shame as the X-Men are my favorite Marvel property and second favorite comic property of all time. The kicker that they don't get it right is unlike the other Marvel movie properties, that even in the comics the X-Men for most their history and with most their characters stuck to their own and were big enough to do so thus, they didn't need the greater MU so it can be the same with the cinematics universe. Of course, that's not why it's like that on screen. Oh what could be, what could be. *sigh*

@lnception: i seriously hope that isn't true , if you've spoilt a film for other people for no reason, you're an absolute degenerate , and proof of why kids should not be allowed online, if you're being sarcastic, then apologies

How about working with WB and bring together the Onslaught Saga (X-men, Avengers and Fantastic Four vs Onslaught)?

But probably after Thanos for Avengers #Infinity_Gauntlet... :P

They need to gain focus, use the comics as a guide, be faithful to the comics, write an interesting story.....

the flow for a series doesn't have to run the same course as the comics but the way things are don should be the same....

I mean Senator Kelly and other government figures in the X-Verse should remain long term villains and play their roles long term, The Sentinels should be in long term and be a threat all the time not just one timeline....they need more villains to challenge em, bring in Sinister and the Hellfire Club and other groups.....bring in Deadpool occasionally....

if these movies were more faithful to the comics I'd be more supportive of em, as it stands I think all of em suck except for Deadpool.....

We do not need origin stories within every movie for all the characters, we don't need to keep seeing Weapon-X and Wolverine's origin or Magneto as the bad guy.....FFS people these idiots keep retreading the same ground and it's retarded....also Bryan Singer should step aside and let someone with a better mind work on these things.....clearly something needs to change behind the scenes cus if more like what they've been making comes out people are gonna walk away....how many Wolverine origin stories are you honestly gonna sit through??? every damn one of these is a Wolverine origin in some way shape or form.....it's ridiculous....

@darthrevenx: I love how they joked about the 3rd movie in Star Wars saga is the worst (when Jean & the gangs came out of the cinema) (this was an in-joke in a relation to X3: Last Stand), but then this movie falls flat in a similar way to the Last Stand.

I liked the first two X-Men movies, and then the reboots/sequel too (First Class & DOFP), but this movie felt too rushed like X3 did.

@skyke101: I'm gonna go ahead and disagree.......yeah, everything X-Men past the first one really isn't that good.....

maybe my problem is I know too much, I'm no X-men expert but I know enough to point and say this is wrong and it's telling when the 90's animated shows did X-Men better [X-Men and X-Men Evolution] even Wlverine and The X-Men was better, 2 seasons and it was pretty much the Days of Future's Past story in longer detail.....guarantee you that animated series was better mainly cus it wasn't just DOFP but Phoenix saga and other stories but all told with Professor X trapped in the future and Wolverine leading the team.....

@darthrevenx: Well, it's a different medium you're talking about.

I was kinda talking about around the movie series comparison from 1st through the 6th. I'm pretty sure most animation adaptation of the comic book were almost always good, so no real competition there. They also had much more freedom to change the character/add more/kill off some because they don't really have to "contract" anyone.

The 1st, 2nd, 4th, and the 5th movie weren't really trying to cramp in all storyline and the mutants too, so they were generally well received compared to the 3rd and the 6th.

@darthrevenx: Wholeheartedly agree with you. The X-Men movies are only a step above the F4 movies...wait, that's a little harsh...but they rank next in line. They have great effects, show off characters everyone loves, but are mostly boring. The first one was great for its time, though.

@Iconoclysm: yeah, first one at the time was epic but even then the plot kinda bugged me, Senator Kelly dies kinda early, magneto's plot was kinda weak blah blah.....

They definitely got the feel of mutants right and they nailed some of the politics of it....the rest went downhill fast....

@habbz: I think you need to be slapped, good sir. Not only is it obvious everything is going to be alright, it was actually already foretold in the previous movie. At the end of the Days of Future Past when Wolverine returns to the present. That timeline is now the future of the alternative timeline - which we are now witnessing in Apocalypse. So of course everything is going to be alright - that's not a spoiler.

I was about to say the spoiler thing but @notchedbandit beat me to it. I think after this film they should take a break and figure out how to write a better universe than what is going on in there now.
