What's New On HBO Max In May 2021: Tenet, Jean Smart's Hacks, And More

In May, HBO Max has plenty of new content coming to its service, including original content like Jean Smart's comedic series, which finally has a name. If you're looking for movies, TV shows, anime, and more, check out what's coming to HBO Max for May 2021 below.

On May 13, Jean Smart's new comedy series Hacks premieres. The show follows a young comedian (Hannah Einbinder) who lands a job writing jokes for seasoned comic who works nightly in Las Vegas (Jean Smart). During the TCA winter press tour, Smart talked about Einbinder's character. "Ava's point-of-view is that if the masses thinks something is funny, then it's not cool," Smart said. "And if the masses like it, you know, if the people from Florida who eat at Panera like it, it's not funny."

If you couldn't make it to the theaters because of the ongoing pandemic and missed out on Christopher Nolan's Tenet, don't worry because it's arriving to HBO Max on May 1. Making more than $363 million globally, Nolan's latest adventure bends time as the hero of the story--played by John David Washington--must find a way to stop World War III from happening. Essentially, Nolan's latest film is a palindrome, and leans heavily into that idea. It's a very unique movie, and the most unique way to watch Tenet is on a Game Boy Advance.

While many people have been enjoying the new Mortal Kombat movie, it won't be around forever. The film leaves HBO Max on May 23, and you can check out GameSpot's review of Mortal Kombat if you'd like. And speaking of Mortal Kombat, the original 1995 movie arrives on May 1--but quickly exits the service on May 31 along with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge. So you'll have most of May to watch and rewatch all four of these MK movies.

In recent news, HBO Max is continuing to expand on original content, casting American Horror Story's Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner in the Green Lantern TV series. Also Warrior Season 3 is coming to the streaming service. Check out everything coming and going from HBO Max below.
