2015 has been an eventful year for Konami. The Japanese publisher has regularly made headlines in the past few months, some pertaining to its reportedly strained relationship with veteran developer Hideo Kojima and others about the company's financial outlook. So much has been written about the company and its controversial developments that we thought it was a good time to recap what's happened.

Below is a timeline of major events that have transpired in the past few months.

March 19:

Kojima Expected to Leave Konami After Metal Gear Solid 5

An inside source at Konami told GameSpot last month that esteemed developer Hideo Kojima would be exiting the company after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ships in September. The decision comes in the midst of a reported power struggle between Kojima and Konami. [Full story]

March 20:

Konami Wants New Staff for Next Metal Gear Game

Just hours after we reported on Kojima's strained relationship with Konami, the publisher announced that it had started early production on the next Metal Gear Solid game. The company also said it was looking for fresh talent to work on this early-in-development game, a follow-up to The Phantom Pain. [Full story]

March 20:

Kojima: I Am 100 Percent Involved in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In a bid to quell concerns that unrest at Kojima Productions would affect The Phantom Pain, Konami released a statement quoting Hideo Kojima as saying: "I want to reassure fans that I am 100 percent involved and will continue working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain; I'm determined to make it the greatest game I've directed to date. Don't miss it!" [Full story]

March 25:

Kojima Station Suspended Indefinitely

As many suspected, the broadcast event Kojima Station was put on hiatus. Given Kojima's uncertain future with Konami, it's not surprising that the series was suspended. What remains to be seen is if the broadcast will ever return, with or without Kojima. [Full story]

March 31:

Silent Hills/PT Website Removes Kojima Productions Logo

Konami wiped clean the Kojima Productions logo from the Silent Hills/PT website, leading some to believe the project might be in trouble (more on that later). Konami did the same for the Metal Gear Solid V websites earlier in the month. [Full story]

April 22:

"Meet The Head Transplant Surgeon at the Center of a Metal Gear Solid Conspiracy"

Kotaku UK reporter Gabriel Galliani dove into the very bizarre story of a head transplant neurosurgeon named Sergio Canavero who looks a lot like the doctor from The Phantom Pain's first teaser trailer. It's all very strange, and some have even suggested it's an extensive marketing ploy for the game. [Full story]

April 26:

PS4's PT, a Teaser for Silent Hills, Being Removed Soon

On this day, Konami announced that the "playable teaser" for Silent Hills will officially be removed from the PlayStation Store on Wednesday, April 29. It remains to be seen if the game will remain playable for people who already downloaded the free game, and if its removal is tied to the news that would be announced the next day. [Full story]

April 27:

Silent Hills Canceled, Konami Confirms

Konami made it official on April 27, confirming that the horror game is no longer in development. It was supposed to feature The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus and was to be directed by Hideo Kojima along with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro, but it was not to be. Though Silent Hills may be canned, Konami stressed that it will "continue to develop the Silent Hill series." [Full story]

April 27:

Konami Voluntarily Delists Itself From the New York Stock Exchange

On the same day that Konami announced the cancellation of Silent Hills, the publisher also revealed that it was removing its shares from the New York Stock Exchange. But this seems like a practical, cost-saving move more than anything tied to that project. After all, over the past year, 99.71 percent of the company's common stock was traded in Japan and the United Kingdom. [Full story]

May 8:

Konami Will Report Earnings for the Latest Financial Quarter

If Konami has news to share regarding the future of the company, this could be a venue where it might do so. We'll be keeping a close eye, as usual, on this earnings report next week.

September 1:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Releases

After years of development, The Phantom Pain will launch worldwide on this date for consoles, while the PC version will be released two weeks later. This will be a telling time: Will Hideo Kojima officially announce his departure from Konami? What will he do next? Check back in a few months to find out.

I really have high hopes that Kojima will not leave Konami this year if not in the coming years. But knowing that his works in Konami from the previous games, I doubt that he would resign from the company. In my opinion, even Konami's getting this financial issues, heck they will still keep Kojima as he is one of the top developers in the gaming industry. Certainly, Konami may not be the one who will take the initiation in making a lay-off out of Kojima but I think, there is this extreme private reason that Hideo himself will be the one to take a first step if ever he will leave the company.

I always liked Splinter Cell better anyways. Metal Gear was to convoluted and tried to copy Splinter Cell gameplay anyway.

The Silent Hill series lost its way long ago. Someone else needs to take over these franchises to breathe new life into them.

Imo, Kojima has always been overrated and I never really liked his games all that much. He may be great in Japan, but for someone like myself that doesn't really like many Japanese games, I'm kinda glad they're doing a little spring cleaning over there. Like the old saying goes... Out with the old, in with the new.

@Vodoo: I'd imagine this comment is considered the height of controversy for many gamers! but to be honest I agree. You can't argue with your point that these series have been going for a while with the same director(s). It would be nice to see where someone else would take them, even if they end up not being as good, it's better to have tried to experiment right?

yeah this is very bad for Sony playstation users... especially for those who have been more of a silent hill fanbase more than metal gear. I mean come on, does konami really have to go all out just like that. metal was good in storylines but I found it lacked in some ways after MGS2. I can understand kojima wants it all open world nowadays. Capcom done this same and similar thing with RE2 just as they did after RE4 was released after mikami left that was it survival horror in RE series was dead. about RE2 go back to when they were in the BETA testings and it was called RE1.5 it had such a magnificent mount of effort gone to waste and what was more awesome about RE1.5 is it was ment to be a bigger story and gameplay unlike todays release now RE2 from 1998. all im trying to say is if you make arrangements to do, don't throw it down the crapper because of a silly hunch. they will never know until the put all their effort and knuckle down and make it work. if it does not accumulate to positive standards start again but keep to the original and improvise more and do what you can to make the game work better. and yes my first horror games was RE-RE2 and Silent hill. and my favorite was always Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams on PS2. the gaming industry has screwed Dino crisis, RE, and silent hill. kojima if you do end up changing you mind on working on a silent hill project get your own studio and rub it in konami's ass or stick to your MGS series and quit making promises and screwing it big for everyone else who had high hopes. I will always look forward to Silent hill 9 as long as it returns to the original roots from silent hill 3/2.

you know what? I don't really care. I rather keep fond memories of great games and be able to replay them instead of having the franchise messed up by releasing crap titles.

At least now they can't mess Silent Hill up even more than it has been after SH3. Every other SH title has been crap(IMO). I started a Homecoming game and quit like 2 hours after because it was so much average.

Honestly, I just think this is the first sign of something DESPERATELY needed in modern gaming; the realization that there are TOO MANY AAA developers, and some have to go. And that being poached by a big name studio, isn't going to lead to longstanding fame or recognition anymore. Is there ANY AAA developer that over the past five years, hasn't at some point abused their fanbase? There might be room for three, MAYBE four big name, Ford-Chevy-Toyota-levels of AAA developer. But the rest has to come from smaller studios, who have a desire to make great games, and be KNOWN for making great games, not sequel mills that please shareholders more than gamers.

That's the problem in games nowadays, is that these companies make the development cost as much as it does. They don't get that a game doesn't need a 50 million dollar budget to be successful. Shadow Complex and Mark of the Ninja were some of the most fun games and they were Xbox Live Arcade games that cost $15.

Ubisoft probably spends far more than that with their Assassin's Creed series because they have 10 studios from all around the world simultaneously working on it. Now they found a fun formula in the Far Cry games and will probably milk that to death as well. They just don't get it!

It sounds like such a massive breakdown in relations within Konami. One positive that might come out of it is that if Konami dismiss Kojima, he might get a pass from the nut-job fans that have sent him death threats whenever he's suggested he may be handing over the Metal Gear franchise in the past.

@unreal849@KidsNDad@may967873: Yep, and the NES Metal Gear was a pile of crap compared to the original version. The Metal Gear isn't even in the NES version. Instead, there is a computer with the BSOD. SOOOO disappointing.

@may967873: millions of people would disagree. kojima has never made a bad game... even snatcher and policenauts are classics in their own right. while he only produced zone of the enders (his influence is all over it), that is another fantastic series.

@Metallicwolf29: That's what happens when you work for a company. Anything you create belongs to them. That's why instead of Mega Man 11, we're getting Mighty Number 9.

Honestly, this could be a good thing. A game similar to Metal Gear, with a different name, and a fresh start. Kojima could even get Hayter to voice the lead, so we'd basically have Snake back, just with a different name, like Gelatinous Fox. :P
