Now Playing: Wesley Snipes Approves of Blade Reboot Casting - GSU News Update

Marvel Studios unveiled a smorgasbord of plans for the next phase of its Marvel Cinematic Universe and all the movies it would include, but the best was saved for last. At the last moment of the panel, Marvel made one more huge announcement: Blade is getting rebooted.

More than 15 years after Blade 3, the character will return to the big screen, and this time as part of the MCU that launched with 2008's Iron Man. The titular character is being recast, however: As revealed at the very end of Marvel Studios' Comic-Con panel, the vampire hunter will be played by Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) this time around. Though the news was shocking, former Blade star Wesley Snipes (Chi-Raq, Demolition Man, The Expendables 3) wants everyone to "chillaaxx."

GameSpot sister site Comic Book got Snipes' thoughts on Ali's casting as Blade. "To all the DAYWALKERS losing their minds right now, chillaaxx. Although the news comes as a surprise, it's ALL GOOD," Snipes told the site. "Such is the 'business' of 'entertainment!' Much peace to the MCU crew--always a fan... So, 'nah fret nah worry, it's not de end of de story.'"

In direct response to Ali donning Blade's swords and fangs, Snipes seems to be excited that someone as "beautiful and talented" as Ali is in the role. "Congratulations and Salaam to Mahershala Ali, a beautiful and talented artist whose expressions I look forward to experiencing for many years to come. Inshallah, we will someday work together," Snipes said. "Welcome to the Daywalker Klique."

In between comments, Snipes was keenly aware to send all the love, "honor and respect to the grandmaster Stan [Lee]," who passed away late last year due to heart complications.

There are currently no other details about the Blade reboot, including director, writer, or release date. However, Comic Book confirmed that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the rebooted Blade will take place in Phase Five of the MCU.

The Phase Four release rollout is just below, including movies and Disney+ TV shows. For a complete panel recap, check out our rundown on everything announced at the Marvel Studios panel.

While I think this guy wont do bad, i always dreamed of a Blade reboot and in my eyes Terry Crews would have made a great Blade. He hasn't gotten a lead role, this could have propelled his career. I still look forward to this.

They should jokingly pretend to cast a no-name white male just to get Snipes’ response. I bet his first his first words would be close to WTF

@Litchie: I was expecting an interview on video. Not some text. That could be made up for all we know.

Snipes was very difficult to work with but he seems to have a lot of passion for what he does, so it's forgiveable. It's not like he is trying to be an Ahole it's just that some perceive it that way.

@ecs33: Have you read the same stories as I have? He was very much an asshole and saying it is because he was passionate is not a valid excuse

@cpbanks: The old Blade was great though. Not saying they can't pull it off but Ali has some big shoes to fill.

As much as I loved Snipes as Blade I'm glad they are doing it without him. The original Blade trilogy had too much baggage that is bette off left behind, namely everything about Blade: Trinity. Additionally, Snipes is old and you have to know they want someone who they can sign for 5+ movies, meaning they need someone younger. It's sad and necessary. If we could pull a post Blade 2 Wesley Snipes out of time, I'd be all for him. Hell I'd even take a non-MCU Blade 4 with him but for this Marvel Studios made the right call.

@tombrown788: mmk? Most of these fat incels aren't getting paid millions to act on screen.

And to think that most of those movies will have a rerun in cinemas...

Hundreds of retarded childish shallow characters putting the classic "tough face" in front of a green screen, spouting off thousands of kindergarten level jokes...

Disney is fucking pathetic now. A shade to it's former self.

To his credit, Mahershala is a dope actor. He was the reason why part one of Luke Cage was any good. He will do a great job. The rest will be up to the writers, director and producers.

@craigtl:

Yeah, i'll second this. I remember watching Luke Cage and thinking "Wow, whoever this guy is playing Cornell Stokes... spot on." Not sure if that means Ali will be a great Blade but he definitely had the thug crime boss character down to an exact science. The voice, attitude and manerisms... just perfect.

Another reboot on something that doesn't need a reboot, that will only be worse than the original which wasn't especially good either. Can't wait.

@Litchie: There's no superhero movie that doesn't get a reboot, good or bad. Superman, Batman, Hulk, Spider-man, etc. Blade is no different. Hollywood needs to make money and superhero blockbusters are guaranteed money.

Avatar image for Litchie

@thomaswmak: I know. Doesn't make this less lame. It's not just superhero movies that gets rebooted. Movie industry as a whole is fucking horrible right now. Reboots upon reboots. Easy money is all they're going for.

@non-scorer: Blade was the best early Marvel movie series imo.

If this is a reboot, it sucks to lose Snipes but I get it. It happens a lot. If this is legitimately Blade 4, then they need to use Snipes. As they said in the movies, Blade ages like a human so he would literally be the right age.
