"We're Ready," Microsoft Says About Xbox One-PS4 Cross-Play

"We've done our bit and we welcome anyone who wants to take part."

An Xbox boss has come out to say again that Microsoft has the technological pieces in place to support Xbox One-PlayStation 4 cross-play and now all that's left to do is sort out the politics of the mater.

No Caption Provided

ID@Xbox Europe boss Agostino Simonetta told Eurogamer that, as we've heard before, Psyonix's Rocket League may be the first game to support Xbox One-PS4 cross-play. But as for when it will happen...

"As a platform we don't force developers to release at any point--it'll be when the developers are ready."

Asked directly if all the technology required for Xbox One-PS4 cross-play was in place, Simonetta said, "Absolutely--we're ready. Rocket League is the first game--and it is a heavily network-orientated game.

"Any title that wants to update their game to include cross-network play, any title that wants to launch soon and take advantage of that, we are ready."

Simonetta reiterated that Microsoft has extended an invitation to any network that wants to connect to Xbox Live, including PlayStation Network. Asked if Simonettea has heard any encouraging news on this front (he used to work at Sony), he only said, "We can only say: we're ready. We've done our bit and we welcome anyone who wants to take part."

Eurogamer's interview with Simonetta also touches on the Xbox One's new devkit functionality and more. Go here to read it.

In March, Microsoft made the announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on Sony's PlayStation Network, among others.

Rocket League was announced as being one of the first games to support Xbox One-PC cross-play (there was no cross-play support for Rocket League's Xbox One edition at launch), while the invitation has been sent to Sony as well.

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Microsoft's Chris Charla explained at the time.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

Later in March, Psyonix boss Jeremy Dunham talked about the benefits of connecting Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for Rocket League, adding that the only thing left to work out was the politics of the arrangement.

Although Microsoft has extended an invitation to other platforms and networks to connect with Xbox Live, Sony has not yet committed to opening up the PlayStation Network to Xbox players.

Responding to Microsoft's invitation, Sony issued an encouraging but indecisive statement.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002," it said. “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

This is something that should have been done a loooong time ago that would only obviously benefit both companies.

Sometimes you buy a game for the particular system that you have and it has a multiplayer component that dies off quickly and renders the game useless. At least now we will have access to more people to play with.

I can see this benefiting shooters and fighting games the most that have multiplayer.

@demon-returns: No, also that isnt true at all if you had like 20 people playing, I play stuff that has less people playing and its just fine I play everyday lol..

Could you imagine how extreme and exaggerated all the fanboyism would be if they combined Call of Duty players? Lmao!! You only killed me because you have a Elite Xbox controller and the sticks move quicker or we won because the PS4 plays smoother. Oh man! Haha!!

I'd accept this feature fully, FROM could link this with DkS3 for three platforms. Only fanboys would view this as a bad concept.

With that stated, will Sony go along with this? Would be awesome if they did.

I am all for this but it is obvious MS is desperate because the Xbox One is inferior to the PS4 and losing horribly.

Avatar image for vinnievic86

@edwardnygma: The PS4 is junk plain and simple.. Don't care how many consoles Sony buys themselves to stay in the lead. My family has had nothing but problems with both our PS4's, cheap controllers overheating and freezing consoles bad online service poor wireless features and a comically bad games lineup. MS is not desperate my friend, they have FAR more money than Sony ever will, they are doing this for the gamers unlike Sony who gives NOTHING back to their customers. PS now is the biggest joke of all time.

Avatar image for macaque12

@vinnievic86: Really? MS is doing this for the gamers? It seems everyone has forgotten when the X1 was announced: always online, no used games, bla bla bla. Than Sony announced something totaly different and voi-a-là X1 will now be like the PS4. I know it's a matter of opinion, but X1 gamers can't deny if it wasn't for Sony the X1 would suck hard.

And forget about the [insert company name here] do their thing for the people, they all do for the people's money. It's a business.

@vinnievic86: Yes Sony is winning because they are buying their own consoles and that is why they are in the lead. I wish I had known I could buy my own product and then profit from it. I could have retired years ago.

Also MS has a lot more money but the real question is will they keep Xbox around? There is no doubt they are losing horribly and many investors have already pushed for getting rid of the division in the past. Finally I have never had a problem with my PS4 nor any of my controllers like you claim.

Cross platform play on consoles is a brilliant thing. Think of all the friends who have had opposite consoles all this time that would be able to play game with each other. Colour me intrigued.

Avatar image for kahuna

What's with the Sony fan raid going on here? Your Playstation Plus/Network dollars wouldn't be going to Microsoft, and you shouldn't need an Xbox Gold account to utilize cross play. If executed correctly, this does nothing but help the players. Imagine with me for a moment.

Crossplay enabled game happens. Now, people who play less popular games have 2x or more the number of people to match with and play (more if Nintendo and PC get invited to the party). What if I don't play old or unpopular games? You still benefit! In the case of dedicated servers, your number of potential servers would increase by a large margin. What's that do? Well, not only room for more players, but more room for matchmaking tuning (better skill-matched players to play with and against), more servers means better latency as they'll be better distributed geographically, and it would mean no groups of friends would be split because of a console preference.

Sony will not go for the deal if it's bad on their end. Neither would Microsoft. But, this has the potential to be the biggest thing in online gaming's history, no hyperbole. I wanna play some Rocket League with the rest of you nerds, the console wars have always been stupid. Pick the better game platform, or the better hardware, not some blind allegiance to a brand name in a desperate attempt to fit in.

Now that I'm a bit better off, I can afford to have all of the modern platforms. I can say with absolute confidence that all of the big 3 (ms, Sony, Nintendo) and PC platforms have distinct advantages over one another, and more importantly, great games.

I, for one, am sick of seeing great older games die out. I know this will almost certainly not effect games already released, but an "online merger" on good terms is one of the best things I think that could happen to the industry. Cooperate while still competing, good for games, gamers, and developers.

Have a tiny bit of faith, Microsoft's new leadership seems to be steering the ship in a much less scummy direction, and if their intentions are revealed to be sincere, I hope they're rewarded for it.

I hate to break the news to you people, but any online game usually plays better on XBL 99% of the time. Single player may be a different story, but playing online is a much better overall experience on XB1 than PS4.

For starters, NOBODY on a PS4 uses a headset. Do you know how irritating that is? I would love to have matches of Xbox vs PlayStation players. Because while the PS4 people are running around every man for themselves, the Xbox players will be coordinating through their headsets.

This is something people should be welcoming, not whining about. I highly doubt MS would charge PS4 players for an XBL subscription, especially because they're behind in sales.

This is something people have wanted since consoles first came online. Now that it's finally a possibility, you whiners still find something to bitch about. Why even bother trying to make advancements if all you do is complain?!!

And for the record, I own both systems and pay for both online services. Every online game is usually bought on XB1 because the quality of gameplay and the experience is more important to me than seeing an extra 100p on a 4k tv. The rare online game I went with on PS4 was The Division, and that was because of the sheer size of the game.

Stop trying to poke holes in every good thing that comes our way. Instead, you should be getting on Sony's ass to make it happen.

@Vodoo: I'm an owner of both consoles, now I can't speak about the online community about the PS4, but I can talk about the Xbox One. I don't see the 'coordination' that you speak about because most of the time people are already in a party. When I go on a multiplayer game all I see is the party icon next to everyone except for that one guy who's talking to himself. Anyone else that's on mic is just plain jerks who wants to insult people. Now not being one-sided here I did hear that a lot of people say that people on the PS don't have mics or they might be in chat with someone else, and of course they could just not care about talking to random people.

Avatar image for Jd234

@Vodoo: Only part I am going to respond to is you saying sony players dont use headsets. You couldn't be more wrong I have well over 50 ppl on my friend's list and everyone of them use's a mic.Besides my friends in real life if anyone adds me or I them they have a mic or else wouldnt be on my friend's list lol.

Avatar image for Vodoo
Vodoo

@Jd234: That's a good way to do it, just add people with mics to your friends list. But 90% of the time I play with random people on PS4, I'm the only one with a mic and it's super annoying. Sony should include a headset like Microsoft has ALWAYS done. That's why Xbox players communicate more, because the console comes with a mic. A crappy mic, but a mic nonetheless.

Why do I feel like this is microsoft's way of trying to get a subscription fee from ps4 users, this seems really scummy and they're trying to force sony's hands, another reason to hate microsoft.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@putaspongeon: Well one thing sony has going for them is the snowball effect: friends buy what other friends have, etc, etc... I believe this is one reason Sony keeps pulling away in console sales, and will continue to. Now if they open up the network so xbox players can play ps4 players, then that edge is lost(since people on the fence about which one to get might choose an xbox instead of the ps4 because they can still play with their ps4 friends). For gamers this is a great idea, but it'll only hurt sonys sales and more than likely increase xbox sales. So it's obvious why microsoft is so willing to do this now. If they had the most consoles out there, there's no way they'd be open to the idea. They finally opened up xbox to pc! Anyways, screw MS.

@putaspongeon: no you're just dumb. MS would never in any way be able to charge gamers from another platform. That's some real deep down stupid shit to say..

And btw, I just got my wife a ticket home to NY for the 20th an took leave for the 25th to the 31st just to play Uncharted 4 in piece. But I'm an Xbox fanboy. Lol what an idiot you are.

Avatar image for putaspongeon

@SchNerdy: They have the server, then they can start charging for the servers/online, which is what they're trying to do. They are trying to get sony users on their server so they can charge them.

It's pretty damn obvious, thanks for not knowing what's going on so I can explain it (sarcasm)

Avatar image for SchNerdy
SchNerdy

@putaspongeon: wow do you even know how this shit works? The only games to use this feature is 3rd Party multi platform games. Example Destiny 2. The game would be using Activision's servers. Which XBL and PSN has access to. MS will in no way be able to force 3rd party publishers to use their servers then charge PSN users for access. You seriously don't comprehend how stupid that idea is and Im sad for you.

Nah. I don't want to play a bunch of lag ridden Microsoft players.

The reason they want to do this is simple.

Microsoft sold a 1/4 of what Sony has. That means developers will stop developing for Microlimp.

So the want to try and entice psn players to play with them. But I'm crosoft servers suck. And how can a game like BF4 be played like that ? Microns ft desnt even have 60fps lol

Avatar image for nerveagent

@trumpwins hahha i cant stop laughing he knows nothing he says doesnt even do 60 fps theres hardly a game on ps4 that runs 60 fps, at least understand your stuff before talking jibberish You cant count either its half not a quarter. I don't believe Sony will do this. This is nothing but Microsoft's way of furthering their goal to monopolize the online gaming market. Microsoft is losing this generation, so to make it seem like they're not worried they are pretending to want to team up with Sony in an effort to please the fans. But what they're really doing is sneaky and conniving. They know if this happens people will not be as likely to purchase a ps4 because it'll put in their minds that there is no difference in consoles. It's a mental thing. They also will have total control over the software used to make crossplay possible. Microsoft's history has always been to enter a market and subtly and slowly take over it. Don't believe me, look it up. They are already on track on monopolizing pc gaming with Windows 10. But hey, if they do take over I'll have to give them credit for coming out on top.
