We Should Talk About How Bra Sizes Work

The Definitive Bra Size Guide For Gamers™

As any number of women's magazines will tell you, 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. That's probably because bra shopping is hell on earth and basically impossible unless you invite a total stranger into the fitting room to help measure you properly, but it might also be a result of our society's complete misunderstanding of what bra sizes even are. If the video game discourse is any indication, most people seem to think bra sizes stop at DD and that anything smaller than "huge badonkers" is in the A-to-B range.

I'm talking, of course, about Tifa Lockhart, who has been accused of having B-cup breasts--as her character model in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks different from her extra-busty appearance in the PS1 era--as well as the entire female cast of Mortal Kombat 11, for that matter. Now, these are fictional women who have top-of-the-line physics engines supporting them, so it's not like they really need the extra support from an $80 Lululemon sports bra. But if we're going to use bra sizes as shorthand to talk about fake women's bodies, we're going to do it right, goddammit.

No Caption Provided

Lucky for you, I know a thing or two about this. Bra sizes have two main components: the cup size and the band size. The cup size is denoted by letters, like B or DD, and refers to the actual breast part of the bra. The band size is a number based on the size of the person's ribcage area (right under the actual breasts), and it's secretly the more important size.

While most people tend to focus on the cup letter, it's band size that determines cup size. So if you have two people whose actual breasts are exactly the same size, but whose band sizes are different, they'll wear different cup sizes. A 36DD, for example, is the same as a 34DDD--those two people have the same size breasts, but one has a smaller ribcage, so the cup size scales up a bit. Why does Big Lingerie do this? Because the cup size represents the difference between your band measurement and your breast measurement, with one inch difference being an A, two being a B, and so on. The bigger the difference, the bigger the cup size.

Anyway, back to Tifa. Tifa is a Woman of Small Ribcage, so I'm going to guess and say she's a 28 band size. If you look at her for even two seconds, you can see that her chest is a lot bigger around than her ribcage. I'd say it's at least a six- or seven-inch difference, which puts her in the F or G range. Did you know bra sizes go up that far? They sure do!

On top of that, there's also been some discussion around Remake Tifa's bra--specifically that she's wearing a sports bra. Sports bras are generally a bit more constricting in terms of fit, and while some retailers do offer traditional bra sizing options, you'll often see sports bras sold in dress sizes (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) or in the small-medium-large metric. Because of the design and further size confusion, sports bras often make chests look "flatter" than they are. In Tifa's case, however, it looks like she's wearing a $100-plus designer sports bra that imitates the look of a regular bra. I'd argue the type of bra she's allegedly wearing has little to no effect on the perceived size of her chest... or how hard she punches the hell out of things.

So while it may be true that Tifa's chest looks smaller than it used to be (or perhaps how you imagined it), it's by no means a small chest. Even if you did think she wears a B-cup bra, though, you can still look at her and see that it is not a small chest. Now that you know how bra sizes work, you can go back to the cast of MK 11, too, and observe that they have different bodies and thus fit a variety of bra sizes. And finally, consider that there's nothing at all wrong with small boobs to begin with.

In conclusion, if you think that video games are being censored because suddenly "every" female character has A- or B-cup boobs, you're just plain wrong. And if you must complain, you should maybe consider complaining about ribcage size instead.

There are so many thing that make no sense in this game, but this, this is what they write about. How about an article on how impractical Cloud's sword is or, just where does Barret store so many bullets in his arm for a canon? arm for a canon!

@ahpuck: its weak but I always thought Cloud didn't manage to get into SOLDIER 1st Class was because he lacked confidence as shown in Crisis Core. Physically he was a fighter and able to stand alongside 1st class soldier as stated in many guidebook. The issue about cloud power was cleared a bit in the expanded universe, he received bit of Sephiroth or Jenova cell (dont remember which one) which increases his abilities as well.

Barret is a mystery. (well not really its ps1 game there are limits)

@realguitarhero5:

This is about censorship, not just of her breasts but the leggings, the shorts under her skirt and her new butt guard. And part of a much larger issue in gaming right now. One only need look at Sony currently to see how far and how dangerous things have become.

You seem to be having the same usual problem that people who like to defend censorship all seem to 'coincidentally' make... a lot! You don't seem to understand cause and effect. This reaction is the effect of outside ideologues causing censorship. You picked the wrong group to be asking about the unrealism of cloud's sword. We're not the ones with the problem distinguishing between reality and fantasy, calling for fantasy to conform more to reality or complaining about tifa's breasts. We are complaining about the fact that they were changed/censored in the first place.. Along with all the other, and i'd argue, worse changes they made to her. But it is funny that people keep propping up that "all about boobs" strawman because this only became an issue after the REEEEEEers whined and complained, without push back or reply.. largely thanks to people like you and this article I might add.

lol What tantrums would that be again? I think you may have confused the people perpetually screeching about boobs being "too big/unrealistic" or "too much skin" with the people fighting against those whiny nitwits. If you want a look at actual real childish tantrums, go take a look at hellholes like REEEEEera. This is merely a long overdue reply! I mean if someone took something of yours, you wouldn't be a whiner because you complained or did something about it afterall. The only pitiful whiny meltdowns i've seen in this topic (and more generally around this subject) are the usual types, loosing their shit over the idea of people pointing out and talking about censorship!

Some things are much bigger (censorship) than the simple issues (boobs) that draw focus on them.

@James_xeno: So people said, "hey, these characters are needlessly sexualized to appeal to male audiences. We think you should reevaluate their designs." And then companies go "yeah, you're right, gaming in 2019 is a different landscape than in the mid 90s, so we should probably make changes to the more immature aspects of our older games when we reboot or remake them"

And your response is "oh my god this is the same as shipping journalists off to work in the mines because they criticized Dear Leader"

Needless by who's standards exactly?? And lol if you really think they just "ask" or that devs need to be told what's right fiction and wrong fiction in the first place.. Let alone even worry about the personal sensibilities of some tiny whiny subset of people from outside the fandom. And again, "immature" by who's and what standards? What does "immature" even mean within the context of her clothing and boob size, or gaming, fiction/fantasy and artistic expression anyway?! Sounds like you are what needs to grow up and out of that elitist dogma.

There is censorship and there is not censorship.. It's as simple as that. No need or point in trying to justify how severe it is or isn't!

Except that it was sites like Polygon, Kotaku, IGN, Gamespot, Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247,Eurogamer etc who misrepresented and mistranslated what the developer said.

THEY spun the narrative that she had gotten a breast reduction surgery, and now they're unironically debunking it because they were called out on it when they were the ones spreading misinformation to begin with...

Also, why is people commenting online a '' meltdown '', but game journalists sitting down and writing entire articles about it isn't?
You don't get to do that...
You don't get to complain about fans having opinions and not being happy about potential censorship but not when game journalists write entire articles about it or give negative scores to a game because of their personal opinions...

What you mean to say is they are reacting to devs caving to outside groups of sad little nitwits screeching and whining, demanding the censorship of said fictional boobs and all other things they personally and dogmatically find "problematic". Because think of the poor oppressed colored dots!

If you want to see overreaction and meltdown, then go to shitholes like REEEEera.. I warn you though.. shit like that can't be unseen.

@James_xeno: ... Do Tifa's tits REALLY look censored to you? Her remake model is well ****ing endowed. I don't think anybody caved to outside pressure, I think they wanted this now MUCH more realistic looking character to have a chest that didn't look ridiculous in their super serious JRPG.

@Mogan:

I wasn't 100% sure before, as the sports bra makes it hard to tell (which really should be seen as a move to censor by default) but after seeing some of the comments by the devs, as well as stuff like this. I think it's a pretty safe bet.

https://i.imgtc.com/f8xQN7f.png

Just to be clear.. I personally like the size better, not being the biggest fan of really big huge breasts. But that's beside the point of all this. It's more than just that.. Plus I actually think the leggings and new butt guard are a far bigger issue of censorship. I mean there is no actual reason what so ever for those changes.. Not even poor excuses about hyper selective "realism" or anything. They straight up covered her up! (covering something the whiners actually whined about I might add)

@tony56723: Funny thing they consider boob size as an ethic decision. Would love to hear their arguments about how the size of breasts can remotely be good or bad in an existential manner. For instance, reducing Tifa's breasts because ethics they are indirectly implying that big boobs are bad, which is completely ilogical and can utterly create bigger issues.

Also, it's not even an ethic issue, it's a moral issue.

I think Tifa's redesign looks pretty good for the most part. I'm not happy with the socks tho, but it doesn't bother me either. What do bothers me is that there is people imposing their visions over everything. This is a japanese product, but somehow it have to be altered and modified to fit your mindset. If this was not your cup of tea in the first place, move on! Stop with this nonsense imposing your way of life into the work of others!

Tifa looks fine. Hype-athletic women do not have large breasts. If they do, they're probably fake. The accuracy is good and makes her look even better/more realistic.

@muckwarrior:

Just because it's rare doesn't mean that it's fake.

Women who look like her do exist, and they should be able to be represented without people crying out for censorship...
Especially since she was one of the original ones and is so iconic.
Breasts are mostly a matter of genetics, some women have genetics for large breasts and have them even if they're very skinny or fit. Breasts aren't only purely fat tissue, and the fat tissue is allocated differently for different people.

I don't know a single person that's "upset" with any changes to how this character looks in the remake.

But I do know a lot of FF fans that ARE upset that this game is being chopped up into "episodes" so that Square can extract the maximum amount of cash possible from longtime fans. THAT'S what people are upset about when it comes to this game, nobody cares one bit about polygon bra sizes.

And if you don't think there is a focused (obsessive) effort to "tone down" sexual aspects, and cover up female characters in gaming (and everywhere else) then I don't know what to tell you.

I notice how you completely ignore the question of WHY she has a sports bra now to begin with.. Especially since you outright stated the fact that in a game, a sports bra doesn't do anything, they have to change how her breasts react in order to do that. Making actually having a sports bra on her, or any fictional character for reasons other than style, totally pointless! Nor do you bring up why they made it so visible in the first place.. almost like they were signaling some kind of message to "someone"... hmmmm very strange. Or the fact that they outright stated now that they were forced to make changes to her because of "ethics". (i.e. PR nitwits)

I don't even really like big huge breasts to begin with. This actually works out quite well for me personally, but that isn't the point!

I also notice how you left out the biggest issue of all! Her iconic look with her legs being covered up nearly completely! (the biggest and only design change of any character so far) This is a remake, not a reboot. There is no reason why character designs should be changing this drastically! ESPECIALLY for something with no actual factual or logical reason for doing so! Are the usual people going to pop out and claim that her legs weren't "realistic" now or something?! Once again.. almost like they were signaling something to someone.

Lastly.. Why was she given shorts under her new ugly skirt? That completely defeats the reason for and mobility gained from having the skirt in the first place! In addition, we find out that she now likely and quite literally has an ass guard/helmet! That looks totally ridiculous and unnatural in the extreme.. when she moves or jumps etc. (I'll somewhat forgive the omission of the new details because it's a rather newish development.)

https://i.imgtc.com/f8xQN7f.png

(Ass guard ^ along with probable proof that her breasts were at some point larger not very long ago.. explaining why it took so long to show her)

Seriously, the ONLY thing not done to her, but that the usual loons at places like REEEEera were whining about before hand, is her belly showing.. That's it! Literally every other thing they wished for/whined about got done and more! (ass guard) Yet for some.. and especially mainstream gaming "press".. Nope nothing wrong here.. The idea of censorship or self censorship is so "ridiculous" that it's almost "silly". Just like every other bit of censorship going on right now. Although I do kind of understand how hard it probably is for those types to see,... with ones head shoved so far up their own ass that they can almost see the light of day at the other end. (and that's giving the benefit of the doubt, that they aren't REEEEEers too, just making excuses and derailing.)

What's up with Barret? I mean, I'm just putting it out there, not too many guys have a chest like his - not even black people... Oh sorry, I forgot - he's a male, so it is important to depict him as he was originally designed in the original games/original media, even if he has unrealistic proportions.

At the end of the day, I personally don't care about the size of Tifa's breasts (my biggest complaint is with the "episode" approach they're doing to the game), but I think it is disgraceful that they are trying to change the game to accommodate all of the "Social Justice Warriors"... And this is exactly what it is, because Square Enix have not offered a single logical explanation as to why they have done it (not to mention the fact that the change directly conflicts with Tifa's depiction in everything else "official").

"Oh, but it's just because of the way Tifa's breasts make the transition from polygons to a realistic depiction in high resolution media"!

Yeah right, keep telling yourself that - meanwhile, any idiot with half a brain can see that not only are her breasts considerably smaller than in the original game, but even "high resolution" media previously released via "official" channels (the "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" film being a perfect example!) depicts Tifa's breasts as being considerably larger, clearly proving that Tifa has had some sort of breast reduction.

Will everyone whinging about this change anything?

Nope.

Developers will continue to make changes like these because it keeps the Social Justice Warriors happy; said Social Justice Warriors will continue to write articles attempting (and failing!) to justify changes to the appearance of women; and gamers will continue to be stuck with "politically correct" games, assuming they have not been restricted to select countries, in order to avoid a fight with Social Justice Warriors (such as the case with the "Dead or Alive "Xtreme" series).

I'd say "vote with your wallets" if you personally feel that passionately about this issue, but it would be largely pointless because again, it probably won't change anything due to the fact that the world we live in today is obsessed with the idea that women simply cannot be unusually attractive, have breasts larger than a "B" cup, be comfortably in skimpy clothing or bikinis... Nevermind reality.

Please stop forcing your real world expectations onto peoples fantasy worlds lol as far as the article im not concerned about boobs size (if was censored than shame on them because i am anti censorship) besides that as I've said fantasy/make believe world so boobs can grow shrink be round or square its make believe and upto the creator should be no criticism for the creators ideas on his fantasy world (unless its based on biased people and outrage culture we have enough of that toxicity)

@codyhall: The reverse has also happened and nobody seems to care about that. Angelina Jolie who is already large breasted had to wear a padded bra when filming Tomb Raider because, even with the padded bra, her breasts were not even close to the size of the breasts on Croft in the games. So it seems making sure the jugs are as unrealistically large in movies as they are in the games is fine but making them smaller is a no no. I don't get the attraction of large boobs on a pretend girl but, to each their own.

Maybe one day people will be able to perceive the difference between make believe/fantasy and reality and know that none fiction can be as natural or unatural as the creator would like and that if you don't like it you do not have to read, watch, or play it. That will ne a good day!

I think many missed the point about this entire thing. There are four camps on this:

1. People who want Tifa to have bigger breasts because they find it more appealing that way.
2. People who don't care about Tifa's breasts because the current one is appealing to them.
3. People who are outraged that a change was made. Either huge fans of the original or convinced that this is censorship.
4. People who were aware of the prediction, and the prediction came true. They don't care about changes themselves, only the reasoning behind the changes.

The first three are self-explanatory. The changes are either appealing or unappealing. The fourth group however, does not care whether the changes are appealing or unappealing. Only "why" matters. And since they do not know the reason, they can't tell whether to approve or disapprove.

Personally, I haven't played the original so I am not familiar with what kind of character Tifa is supposed to be. However I heard the predictions people made long before any of this was actually confirmed. I didn't believe it would happen but now that it did, it does give some credibility to the idea that the change was made out of fear rather than making a better product. If they thought it makes the game more enjoyable, great. If they thought the content would alienate significant number of players or negatively affect the sales, that's a fair concern. If they wanted to teach us that we shouldn't objectify people, it sounds preachy but fair enough. If they wanted to avoid game being rated "M", fair enough but I don't know if such small things really would change anything. But if they feared about causing controversy or their game being potentially banned, altered or otherwise affected by corporate censorship, these are sufficient grounds for an outrage that makes discontentment with EA's shoddy practices look tiny in comparison.

Didnt really understand what you were talking about until the end paragraph. If ppl are complaining that video games are being cencored just cause the chicks looks real then let them do so. Its only the ones who prefer to live in their fantasy worlds rather than in this one who do so anyway. However, you said youd teach me about bras, you suck at that, Im more confused now than I was before you said anything. Didnt know about the ratio between cup and band size so thx for that. But you did however confuse me further with mentioning the 36DD -> 34DDD. TF... There are three letters now? Where are these 3 boobed women I want to meet them now! How about you educate me on that instead of complaining about some basement dwellers and the tantrum theyre throwing about video games showing real breasts for once, and taking the f time to put certain words in italic etc geez... Personally Id say she still has pretty big tits, not to mention Im guessing every woman with more than 2 brain cells who has the life style the game depicts would go for a sports bra... Logic 9000. Why even engage in the basement dwellers tantrum? Educate me about these 3 boobed women instead, or at least what it means when there are 3 letters common

@TEOL222: in all fairness though girls like Tifa do indeed exist in reality. Now granted I can’t say that any of them are martial artists, but I don’t think anyone in real life can whip around Cloud’s buster sword either. Just a case of fantasy not following reality to the letter really.

You do realize we are talking about a completely fictional character (really a group of colored dots on a screen) in a fictional world made for entertainment! In a game with the word "FANTASY" in it's name no less!

I play, watch and read fiction/fantasy for enjoyment, for fun, to relax and spend a little bit of time away from reality.. an escape from it.. as i'm sure most others do as well. As someone who does, let me just be the first to, as politely as I can, tell you to get out of here with that super selective demand for "realism" bullshit. Go make your own super realistic fantasy media if you want that.. or just watch the news and spend time on twitter for all your whiny, feel-good virtue signaling ideological circlejerking needs.

@TEOL222:

Oh , really sorry about that then.. A little too quick to react there. It's just that there are only so many times you could see the same arguments over and over and not start to react a little more.. forcefully. Especially when they come from people using them as little more than cover for the defense of censorship and the push to pressure (force) self-censorship. Usually alongside childish name calling and ridiculous diversionary arguments/fallacies/insults.

@James_xeno: Honestly Ive fallen hard on my ass with this article. I simply failed to realize that its just a pretty bitch creating fake news to hype her social media accounts. That was my mistake. You can see from what I wrote first that I was unsure what I was reading even then, and I went straight into the trap believing theres an actual discussion about something this stupid, fake news ftw... We should stop bumping this shit:/ (sry for bumping this shit!)

@TEOL222: here is the thing, nobody really complained about Tifa's boobs. This "basement dweller" thing is made up through and through. Note how the example provided does not seem to be really some out of control outrage.
