We Regret To Inform You That JK Rowling Is Tweeting Again

The creator of Harry Potter has whirled up another firestorm, this time including but not limited to trans people.

Harry Potter creator JK Rowling has become known for creating controversy around her thoughts on gender and transsexuality. In a weekend tweetstorm, the author once again stepped into a contentious topic by signal-boosting and then defending a tweet criticizing hormone treatments and the "pure laziness" of the medical professionals who prescribe them.

This time it began when Rowling liked a tweet criticizing hormone treatments as "the new antidepressants" (via The AV Club) and saying they're overprescribed. A backlash started to surface online, and Rowling replied in a lengthy tweet thread.

"I've ignored fake tweets attributed to me and RTed widely. I've ignored porn tweeted at children on a thread about their art. I've ignored death and rape threats. I'm not going to ignore this," she began. Her replies took exception to people suggesting that the original tweet had criticized the patients themselves as lazy when instead that criticism was pointed at doctors, but she went on to share her more general thoughts about the purported risks of overprescribing hormone treatments and surgery.

Most recently, Rowling caused controversy when she asserted that biological sex is an immutable law of nature. That caused enough of a stir that it prompted a response from actor Daniel Radcliffe and has reportedly caused discomfort among developers of an upcoming Harry Potter game. Meanwhile the Harry Potter fan community has been distancing itself from Rowling.
