We Happy Few Delayed; Developer Removes Option To Pre-Purchase Game

Get happy.

Remember We Happy Few, the BioShock-inspired survival game that entered Early Access back in 2016? Developer Compulsion Games is still working on it, but today it announced that the game's full launch has been delayed until Summer 2018.

Compulsion revealed that the game is now content complete, but it needs a bit more polish and refinement before it's ready to be released. Specifically, the studio is working on implementing "major improvements" to the beginning of the story for Arthur, one of the playable characters in the game.

Now Playing: GS News Update: We Happy Few Delayed; Removing Option To Pre-Purchase Game

We Happy Few's producer, Sam Abbott, explained, "There are these moments that are memorable, very funny, and super weird and we're really excited to show you all. But we felt that the first two hours of Arthur's story just didn't live up to those moments, meaning that the game didn't start as well as it should."

In addition, Compulsion addressed feedback from fans who said that the game's Early Access price was too high. The Early Access version has been available to anyone who pre-purchased the game on Steam. Since it's essentially a preorder, Compulsion set this version at $51, the price it expects the final game to cost; as a result, some fans complained that it was too high of a price for an unfinished game.

In response, Compulsion is offering refunds to all Steam players, regardless of playtime. In addition, it is disabling the pre-purchase option on Steam at the end of January and will re-enable it when the game is closer to launch. You can learn more about the current state of the game in Compulsion's developer update video above.

We Happy Few will be available this summer on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In the game, you assume the role of one of three characters who refuses to take their hallucinogenic "happy pills" and has to somehow break out of the town. Check out some gameplay from We Happy Few in the embed at the top of this article.

"some fans complained that it was too high of a price for an unfinished game."

What???? Have these people never heard of early access before? You pay for the whole game not half of it because it's only half done....preorders don't cost $0 because your unable to play the game once it becomes available for preorder.

@drunk_punk: In other instances of early access though you pay a smaller price because you're effectively QA testing the game for them, that being the bonus for buying it early.

@TTDog: In some cases this happens and some it doesn't. If i remember right when i bought don't starve and don't starve shipwrecked in early access they were the same price when it fully released, though i did get don't starve together for free. For small indie developers they might need some funding before the games release to add everything they want to the game. If the store page was clear about it being early access and they showed the price then I see no reason why these people should be angry at the developer since it was their decision to buy it at that price anyway and knowing the game wasn't complete.

It looked really interesting from the limited gameplay I saw. Hope it does well.

Anyone play this in Early Access and has an opinion on the game? Saw adverts for it a bunch, but never got a decent grasp of what it actually is.

@Greyfox-101: Here is the story:

The game was pretty fun in early access, but it also fell short because it went for this whole minecraft/survival type game.

Everyone agreed that it's story/Scripted elements were way better and so the team basically come to terms with that and stopped making their game like this open ended survival game ... and now it's gonna be more like a story you play through. Something scripted like say Half Life or Bioshock. But of course also very unique.

I'm very much looking forward to it.

@Greyfox-101: They changed game a lot during early access. Almost reworked it completely, so any videos you might see might not be what is in the game right now.

@gagula94: good to know. I was mainly interested in it from the artwork I saw for it. Hopefully they'll get it on steady ground for later this year.
