A movie featuring the supernatural superhero team Justice League Dark has been in development at DC for several years, with a variety of filmmakers attached to it. A live-action film looks like it might still happen, but in the meantime, an animated version is set to be released next year. A first trailer has arrived--check it out below, via IGN:

Justice League Dark focuses on the more supernatural members of the DC Universe, such as John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Deadman. The film's cast includes Jeremy Davies, Alfred Molina, Matt Ryan, Jerry O’Connell, Jason O’Mara, and Rosario Dawson. Ryan reprises his role from the short-lived live-action TV show Constantine, while O’Connell, O’Mara, and Dawson play Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman respectively.

Like DC's recent animated feature Batman: The Killing Joke, Justice League Dark carries an R-rating. According to the trailer, the movie contains "some disturbing violence."

A movie version of Justice League Dark has been in development for some time. Last year both Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor were rumoured to be in consideration for the lead role of John Constantine. Guillermo del Toro was at one point in line to direct, and submitted a potential script to Warner in 2014.

Most recently, it was reported that Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has been hired to helm the film. In August, Variety stated that the project was now going under the title of Dark Universe. Liman was set to direct the X-Men spinoff Gambit at Fox, but has since left that much-delayed project.

Justice League Dark is expected to hit home entertainment formats in early 2017.
