Watch This Bizarre Japanese Commercial for PS4's Tearaway

This is almost certain to be the strangest game ad you'll see today.

You might have thought the recent Japanese ad for Destiny: The Taken King was a bit unusual, what with it featuring a Destiny armor-wearing man screaming into a washing machine. Well, that's no longer the strangest game commercial of the month, as Sony has released a new one advertising the new PS4 version of Tearaway.

No Caption Provided

The video features a woman wearing a safari outfit with a stoic expression on her face. She's shown playing in between shots of gameplay, and all the while a song is being sung about the game's unique control scheme. At one point, she sort of flies into the air; other times the camera seemingly lingers on her for too long, almost as if this were a Tim and Eric bit.

However strange the ad, Tearaway Unfolded--the name of the PS4 version of what was originally a Vita game--is a very good game. There's new content and reworked controls, and as the video shows, those with a PS4 camera can still see their own face floating in the sky.

@Ahiru-San: Is not new, they have L and R backwards and it has always been that way.

@alucardmorgurth: well I'm not over 120yo, so I couldn't argue with you about "when" it began.

but it sure got common after WWII, with high influence of the USA (animation, products, etc). katakana - which was used to help reading Chinese kanji - was also used to refer to other foreign languages, such as English...

see, there's ろ (/r/o) in hiragana which has no "L" syllable, but ロ (/r/o) in katakana is used in both R and L words -- i.e. ロースト ("roast", as in roast beef) and ロスト ("lost", in romaji "ro-su-to"), and risking being ignorant, some people, even in industry, would write in romaji as "Loast" instead of "Roast". but this would not happen on hiragana/traditional japanese words (like ありがとう == "arigatō", never "aligatou")

artists and singers tend to use L just to sound more, er, hipster or more contemporary.. to make them look like super-pop-stars-who'd-rather-say-aLigatō-unlike-those-senior-old-farts-that'd-never-surrender-to-the-eastern-culture.

like I said somewhere else, talking like this with children is o.k., even cute coming from young kids. but I still hate this.

@Ahiru-San: Comes from that, because when we heard them say L, they said weak R, but when we said L, they heard R. And now the new gen knows how to pronounce L, they're gonna do it for anything that has an R, and weirdly the opposite too. Like Monki Di Rufi being Monkey D Luffy. Dunno whos fault is the misconception of R and L, well they don't actually have an L in their "alphabet".

@maitkarro: it's cute for young kids to talk like that, like "sayōnaLaaa", but then again, their tongues are still learning..

in Portuguese, the /r/ sound in mono /r/ syllables are exactly the same as the /r/ in Japanese. most people talk to babies up to 1-2yo replacing the R by L, to sound more like babies or act really stupid around kids... it's dumb, but it's the same thing in Japanese, I guess...

@maitkarro: sure there's no L, but saying "aligatō" sounds terrible. like someone with a really bad accent warning people about an alligator...

maybe they learned from foreigns that couldn't pronounce a sharp /r/ (as in aRIgatō).. most native English speakers have trouble saying /r/ in japanese, so the closest they get is some weird L or D sound...

@Ahiru-San: About the latter, that's because the Japanese R sounds like L or D, because the Japanese themselves pronounce it like that, even when we pronounce our R, and they try to reproduce it, what they hear coming from their mouth still sounds right, but for us it sounds something different. Problem is just that we try to use one letter to define their multiuse "R", and they were okay with it, even when they don't have an L in their native vocabulary. Also one thing fucks up things is that when some japanese children learn english as a second language, they can't hear or produce the difference of L and R properly, it's in the culture already, so we just have to live with the fuckup our translators made the first time.

Pretty tame for a Japanese commercial, didn't see anything overly strange. What's the fuss?

Is this your first time watching a Japanese commercial Gamespot?

It didn't seem that weird, I mean "weird" is what commercials seem to go for these days, it's the same thing in North America really, just slap together anything that'll leave a lasting impression, and usually "weird" works. It was a rather long game commercial though, I guess they got caught up in that sweet jam lol.

I always hear people saying how Japan is a weird country. It really isn't. They just have a different culture. And this seems to be the norm in their culture.

I'm sure lots of people in Japan think we're a weird country when they look at our TV shows, ads, etc. just as the way we think they're weird.

I would not call it bizarre , but its not usual , still I would rather call most American Commercials/ads "Bizarre" where half-naked girls coming out of nowhere even if the subject has not anything to do with girls , no offense.

@woomar: Whereas those same ads in Japan would feature 12 year old prepubescent girls, albeit animated to bypass any potential legal trouble. No offense.
