Nintendo has already unveiled the basic concept for its new system, the Switch. On Thursday, it'll dive into the specifics, revealing much more about Switch during a presentation that will be streamed online--and you can watch it right here.

The presentation takes place on Thursday, January 12, at 8 PM PT/11 PM ET. It will stream through the embed below. You can also follow along with our liveblog here.

Nintendo has said it will discuss Switch's price, game lineup, specs, and "other details" during the event. The stream is intended for a worldwide audience, but according to Nintendo UK (via Nintendo Everything), it will be broadcast in Japanese with English language voiceover.

Nintendo also plans to further highlight Switch games in another livestream the following morning. Return here at 6:30 AM PT/9:30 AM ET on Friday, January 13, to watch that Treehouse Live event. Details on what this will consist of haven't been shared except to say it'll provide an "in-depth look at upcoming games" from Thursday night's event.

Switch is a hybrid console/handheld system that can be played on a TV or taken on the go. Among the games confirmed for it so far are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dragon Quest XI, and a new Sonic. It's slated for release in March.

Better off waiting until it goes on sale. This outdate hardware is not worth $299.

I love the concept of the console, like the return to motion controllers, if they're as good as the motion plus wii mote or better. Though I'm probably in the minority on that one. Local two player on the go. The 'HD' rumble could add a nice level of immersion. So the console itself is neat. Mario, 1 2 switch and Arms shows Nintendo taking some risks and that new Square RPG has a FFVI vibe. For the rest, I don't see how anyone outside of Nintendo's extremely loyal fans will want to buy the Switch when it launches March 3rd. Unless Nintendo held back launch / window software from the presentation, 4-5 games from March to Christmas do not a console sell.

I don't see anybody other than kids or people completely blinded by nostalgia buying this console. I expected it to not excel but come on, this is embarassing for gaming. Dammit Nintendo!

@livedreamplay: And handheld gamers. Don't forget the handheld gamers :) This will be a huge upgrade to my 3DS, and a pretty decent one to my Vita. Of course I would never use it as a home console/primary gaming device.

Where's Metroid, Smash, F-Zero, StarFox and other appealing titles like a new Bayonetta or NieR for example. Of all those games they've listen I'm interested in Zelda, Splatoon and Mario, two of those come mid or end of 2017... so yeah I'll hold off to 2018 and hopefully some proper Nintendo titles will be announced in the meanwhile.

Embarrassingly bad. Like watching Japan introduce games from the NES era and expect them to relevant.

Yeah I don't know... I literally had the pre-order on my cart with payment info filled out and ready to go. Now after the presentation video, I'm not so sure if I want it right away. I can always play the new Zelda on my WiiU.

Give me onboard part voice chat, Super Smash Bros Switch edition, lower the price $50 less, bundle it with one game, release it with at least 10 good game at launch and reduce the scary price of the pro controller and I might get one :)

I give Nintendo as a company 50% chance of surviving this console generation. Maybe they will finally admit they haven't had a clue about making a successful console since SNES (yes, that means the Wii was a total fluke, but then again that thing didn't move games anyway). We can only hope they get wise and SWITCH to a 3rd party developer after the Switch completely implodes.

They sure know how to pick the most boring presenters they can find. I know japanese are very reserved and it is not normal to show emotion in public, and I know the live audience was predominately japanese but cmon... it looked like they were talking about their finanical report at a board meeting, and any attempt at some humor just looked way to corny and stiff.

I suppose some nuances might get lost in translation but still... other japanese presenters on past Sony and MS stages generally arn't as booring. Even Yoshida full on in his blue suit at a japanese stage is a bag of fun compared to these.

Avatar image for kadaverhagga

@TheWatcher000: Japs is racist? It is not short for japanese? More than I knew. I looked it up and you are right it is a slur in the states and in the netherlands. Seeing as I'm not from those countries and our own short version "japsar" is not offensive it was an honest mistake. Fixed!

We have short versions of alot of countries/people and none of them are slurs. Similar to Yanks, Brits, Scotts, Danes, Fins etc.

Still you don't need to assume everyone speak english natively and your regional meanings do not apply to everyone. Ask first judge later.

Lmfao. Same price as ps4. Half the power. 32gb storage. Now you pay for online service. Havent heard shit about a party system or microphone. So it will be typical nintendo online gaming. Playing with your friends...in silence... and to top it all off. LITTLE TO NO AAA support.. same old story. Charging 300$ is hilarious for a TOY. Yes. This is a toy

The microphone functionality has been shouldered off onto the smartphone app that Nintendo is apparently rolling out. It will also be used for organizing groups and such, though it doesn't go too into specifics.

@killerious: i'm just amazed by how terrible this thing is. At least when the wii u came oht it was as powerful as the ps3/360. Now were looking at a console thats coming into the market 3 years late and severley underpowered. Thats a really good way to make developers never want to touch this thing. Nintendo needs tostop making these pathetic consoles and go all in on handhelds.

Avatar image for killerious
Killerious

@mototim34: I'll tell you that. If they came up with a killer new IP, they would convince many people to invest in this new console, but there isn't any. I wanted to buy the Wii U for Smashing Bros., just because I love this game so much (eventually I didn't). Nintendo can sell this crappy console if there was a Switch-exclusive new IP title that will make everyone want to buy the Switch because of it - but there is none, end of story.

Quite a polarizing result tonight.

I'm impressed with the motion control upgrade for the controllers. Every system has tried it now, but this looks to be a solid focus of the system, a push in the VR direction without going way too far with extra gear.

I can't wait till the morning when, as planned, they will announce more games...this press-announcement was for the console specifically and by what games they did cover, I'm actually excited. For the first time in years, I'm excited for a home console.

I don't want spec-gibberish or sport-shooters or multi-player,

just give me another adventure to go on.

Lmao Nintendo didn't show the world any sort of power and performance specs at the live stream and that's because it's so damn woefully underpowered they're not even gonna tell us any specifics lol ALSO NO LAUNCH LINEUP, MARIO looks like a Nintendo 64 level game as far as graphics, THEY ARE GONNA HAVE SKYRIM but it's not gonna be remastered version as it's gonna be comparable to the more than a decade old Xbox 360 and PS3 tech lol, FIFA WILL BE CUSTOM BUILT FOR THE SWITH LOL which means of course downgraded and down scaled to run on the low power low performance mobile hardware lmao, I MEAN Seriously GUYS THIS is shocking even to me as I didn't expect it was gonna be nearly this bad as the live stream event was horrible AND YEA MAIN THING IS THE GRAPHICS ARE TERRIBLE ITS SAD and based on the fact they won't even share any power n performance numbers due to it being so woefully underpowered that means you can forget ANY MAJOR AAA 3rd party titles as 3rd party developers won't make games for this system which are also gonna release on Xbox one PS4 Xbox Scorpio PS4 Pro because they would have to seriously downgrade and downscale the games it's not gonna be worth it and nobody will buy the downgraded and down scaled graphics and performance games for NINTENDO SWITCH when they will get a vastly superior version on the XBOX & PLAYSTATION consoles and so yea the most Nintendo switch will ever have is maybe a few developers making downgraded and down scaled versions of minor 3rd party games for maybe the first year AND THEN IT WILL BE WII U all over again because NINTENDO FAILED TO BRING TO THE TABLE AT LEAST AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF POWER THAT CANT EVEN COMPETE WITH CONSOLES WHICH LAUNCHED 4 years ago and that's sad I GUESS NINTENDO DIDNT LEARN ANYTHING and failed to bring something even remotely capable on a hardware level and it's really sad.......

Avatar image for killerious

@doctor_mg: Of course not. I didn't say they are. The thing is that more powerful computing power help developer deliver better games and doesn't pose some limitations that can limit their creativity. I mean every console has its limits, but if it's that low, some ideas just would be left behind. I personally don't like to see lack of anti-aliasing in games, it really makes the game looks bad visually and disturbs me. I think that the Switch can be a better laternative to the 3DS if it had some good new titles for it. I skipped the 3DS because I thought the Switch might be a great alternative, but right now I really don't know. I need to think about it.

This console is $300. It's going to cost $60 just for Zelda and $70 for the pro controller! I'll wait until the end of this console's lifecycle. Barely any good third party games. Not even getting the remastered Skyrim version, I don't know how people can use those joy con analog sticks. They're tiny as f###.

So it's basically a portable Wii U with different ways to input commands.

I will probably wait till Wii U goes offline or a good bundle is released, no rush.

I still have a New 3DS.

Avatar image for hazuki

So the price kinda dissapointed me. If it is the tegra x1, its definately not expensive to manufacture. NOW! If they integrate media functions like netflix/hulu/hbo/amazon into the system 'well', and allow you to use it as a tablet without controllers- that helps tremendously.

Just, we know how bad nintendo is with digital downloads. Its hard to hand ninty money for that. Zelda looks fun. I think it'll do well enough as a system. Just, 299$ and 'nothing' grabbing me, not right now. Maybe 199$ and some software. What did shock me, paid online play. Given how 'bad' the services have been before. I guess we'll see though!

I'm just curious. Ps4s/xbones going for 200$-250$ and less used. I did just see a ps4 pro go for 359$ new. Will it being portable, win over audiences. Could! Just, that new battery life is scary. And batteries do go bad over time. 2 and a half hours on the low end. Which, given the 'always' lackluster audio amplifier on ninty portables and I like the brightness high- would likely be that 2 1/2 on games for me.

Heres a kicker. The mario game reminded me so much of sonic adventure 1. Which we know what happened with that system ;-) I'm hoping it does well. I do. The hardware guys seem to have done alright. It is so highly software, and not just game software, dependent.

Avatar image for doctor_mg

@hazuki:

Nintendo's batteries are pretty solid. My SP just started to diminish in quality after 11 years of fairly consistent playing.

Nintendo is kind of like Apple...the specs don't seem good, but they will last you a while, if you catch my drift.

Anyway, don't try to dreamcast this system lol! I want Nintendo to stick around, even if they have to learn from mistakes. They are one of the few who know what durable hardware and fun are...

Avatar image for hazuki
hazuki

@doctor_mg: The SP battery itself was fine! Just you remember the port that charges it? That thing went bad on me in just about two years. So I couldn't use headphones, and it eventually just died. Hell of a system though.

See I think the specs are actually perfectly fine, if the rumors are right. Specially if you just have a 1080p tv, its not going to look horrible. If this was 'strictly' a console, oh yeah. Business suicide 101. I do think 299$ is the highest they could get away with though, especially with current gen consoles being so cheap already. It'll likely sell. Its just a personal thing, i don't think its a day 1 buy for me. And historically I'm a launch day buyer. '32 hours I sat for the wii. Mainly for fun really. But not even two hours after, people started packing quick!'

I hope they take advantage of what they got, and make this thing boom. I do. There is 'so' much potential. Think a tablet, plus a games system. My worry is their U.S. marketing and research team, is patheticly bad. If they can get software on this thing, it could be a must have. But I do believe if they bomb there, we might see another wii u problem.

Avatar image for Fia1

uhhh, im kinda disappointed in the online cost, and that battery life, lol.... 3 to 6 hours depending on game, so if it's the newest zelda the battery will last less than 3 hours, i bet you it will last like 2 and a half hours, very sad, but whatever...

Avatar image for doctor_mg
Doctor_MG

@Fia1:

They say on their website that it will get you "roughly" three hours on a single charge. Honestly, that isn't to bad in my opinion. The 3DS batter was only around 4 hours for Ocarina of Time.

No Specs and just one good game at launch

Is not that I'm surprise because I'm not but they did exactly what I was hoping not to see and yet they did it again. Other than the Zelda game at launch I saw nothing else that interest me to get this thing at launch and as expected no sing of any Specs so is very clear that they have something to hide and that's why there is no mention of any specs. so I will wait until the end of the year or the beginning of next year and see where they are and then see if I'm dropping $300+ smackers in the Switch.

I thought that after the Wii U bomb that they finally learn their lesson but shockingly it didn't. It is shocking that they can even match hardware that came out 4 years ago and they are so scare of letting you know how small of a update the Switch is over the Wii U that they made 0 mention of any type of specs for their newest console. I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the Game Cube and I really wanted to get a Switch but Nintendo so far has done everything in their power to convince not to do it.
