Watch the Funky First Trailer for the New ToeJam and Earl Game

"Somebody tried to run me over with a lawnmower."

Adult Swim Games has released the first trailer for ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove.

As you can see in the video below, Back in the Groove retains the spirit of the earlier games while applying a fresh coat of paint. The gameplay for this "funky new adventure" looks as odd as ever, complete with a man trying to run someone over with a lawnmower and more.

Now Playing: ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove Teaser Trailer

The story for Back in the Groove is pretty funny, too. ToeJam thinks it's a good idea to borrow the Rapmaster Rocketship, so he and Earl can take Latisha and Lewanda out for a ride to impress them.

TJ tells Earl to dial up the bass on the speakers to get the groove going. He says to Earl, "Press the red button." Unfortunately for them, this button says "Black Hole - Do Not Press" and sends them swirling through time and space. To get home they have to find the pieces of their ship, a process that is going to get pretty wild if the trailer is any indication.

"Back in the Groove is a mash-up of the very best features from the classic console games (that's one and two, y'all), with a pile of new features thrown in," reads a line from the game's official description. "The goal is to give old skool TJ & E fans a pure blast of funky nostalgia, and give new players a taste of the lighthearted, co-op play that is TJ & E."

Back in the Groove is scheduled to come out in 2017 for PC and consoles. The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter last year, when people donated more than $500,000 to make it happen. Original designer Greg Johnson and his team at Humanature Studios are developing Back in the Groove.

The original ToeJam & Earl was released for the Sega Genesis back in 1991. This was followed up by a 1993 platforming sequel called Panic in Funkotron, and then ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth in 2002.

Adult Swim Games also published Double Fine's Headlander, which came out in July.
